2. SUBCULTURE
Subculture is a group within a group who and share a
range of characteristics to form up a collective
identity.
An example of a subculture is „Hippies‟ throughout
this PowerPoint I will analyse the „Hippies‟ looking
specifically at how the subculture began.
3. WHAT ARE THE HIPPIES
The hippie, also spelled hippy, subculture was
very original mostly formed up of youths in the
United States in the 1960s. The name was formed
from the saying “I am hip,” a term which was
inspired by the 50‟s movement called ‘Beat
Generation‟ beats of the 1950s. Allen Ginsberg and
Jack Kerouac where considered to be the leaders
of hippies.
The Hippie movement emphasised the freedom of
youths and motifs within their clothing also stressed
beliefs of the subculture
4. APPEARANCE
Hippies where mostly known for the bright colours of clothing
which where worn and peace sign motifs. Key physical
aspects of the Hippies fashion included:
Hip tight bellbottom denims with broad flashy belts.
Halter necked body tight tops.
Men can opt for leather vests and wear elongated hair and
beard; these have to be rumpled.
Short minis accessorized with chains.
Flat leather sandals.
Tie and dye printed clothing.
Patch work skirts.
Multicoloured headbands put on with a huge flower.
Colourful and vibrant t -shirts.
A peace sign accessory.

7. INFLUENCES & INTERESTS
Peace, love, environment, drugs, including magic
mushrooms, cannabis and LSD
They have influenced art, mainly in terms of colour,
freedom, non-violence movements, music industry
(music festivals)
