1. Social Networking for the Professional Environment Jane Macoustra Tai-Pan Research International Conference of Asian Special Libraries (ICoASL) 2008. Shaping the Future of Special Libraries: Beyond Boundaries New Delhi 26-28 th November 2008
Hello, I am Jane and I previously worked in Asia for 2 ½ years, and was President of the SLA Asian Chapter for 2 years. It’s a great pleasure to be here today.
Today, I will briefly take you through some of the technologies that affect our working and social lives.
There’s no reason to jump on an aeroplane if you have the right technology. Communication is cheap and you don’t need to leave home. I guess I could have given this presentation from the comfort of my living room, but I like being here with you today, and having the opportunity to spend time with you for the rest of the conference.
Miniwatts estimated over 1.5bn Internet users, 60m of whom are Indian. The online population is constantly growing.
In the USA alone, Social networks are a fast-growing medium for communication
As we interact more with each other online, what’s happening to the data we put into the “system”? Where is our data going? Who’s using it and why? Privacy International is an organisation who monitors the Internet to answer questions like these ones
They published a report called “A Race to the Bottom”
Their findings weren’t pretty to read.
And they looked into how our use of virtual worlds can be monitored including who we talk to and what about, and where we go
Virtual worlds are a place for educational and professional organisations to meet. Is a virtual world gaming or isn’t it? Well, it has an element of both.
There are many virtual worlds and here are a few hyperlinks to learn more about virtual worlds
What are the privacy issues of using virtual worlds? The company controls the “world” and they can change the Terms and Conditions of use at any time. They can watch your activity and target you with specific advertising based on what they monitor about you.
And where do the boundaries between reality and Virtual exist? Why is it a real life criminal offence to delete or take a virtual person or item? Where is the balance?
And they want your other data – not just to know about you – but who you know and are linked to with in all aspects of your life
Now this is an interesting one…….The Pentagon stopped the Troops from using YouTube to make contact with their families, and offered this instead. How safe is it?
Is it really you, or are people looking at someone else? Has your data been amended by another? Has your reputation been altered adversely by these changes to your personal profiles?
The good thing about using social networks is the positive ways they can be used.
Continuing education has a huge public profile and network that encourages learning without money
A senior libarian in Hong Kong found a great way to utilise social networking…..
To promote his library services to his customer base
The outcomes for the library were extraordinary
When the sun sets in England it rises in Oz and information services are provided 24/7. In a life-threatening situation, where specialist knowledge is required, this service is vital.
How does SLA Asia use Web 2.0 to keep in touch?
And it brings us together
Voice over Internet Protocol – how many of you use it? Cheap telephony for a contact centre
These are examples of some of the ways that using VoIP may not be a conducive medium for communication
RSS – who’s not using it. Ask for a show of hands…….Why not?
I have 2 feeds on my computer, and only open news items if it of interest – the data is brought to me, I’m not looking for it
It’s not just gossip. It’s information. Information is knowledge. Knowledge is power.
