Contact between Post-Yangming Followers
and Zen Masters, and Its Meaning
Abstract
There was a rather deep relationship between post-Yangming followers
and Zen masters. Some of these followers had close contact and communication
with Zen masters. The paper takes both historical approach and text analysis
to find the communication between post-Yangming followers and Zen masters,
as well as its meaning, and also clarifies the contexts, and makes in-depth
analysis. The paper finds that the post-Yangming followers, including
Wang Ji, Wang Bi, Luo Ru-Fang, Li Zhi, Jiao Hong, Zhou Ru-Deng, Zhou
Yuan-Biao and Tao Wang-Ling, had certain extent of communication and
interaction with some Zen masters, including Yuzhi Faju, Yunqi Zhuhong,
Yunkong Changzhong, Zhenwen Zhixiu, Xiaoyan Debao, Wunian Shenyou,
Miyun Yuanwu, Hanshan Deqing, Daguan Zhenke, Zhanran Yuancheng,
Xuelang Hongen and Langmu Benzhi. During Wanli period in Ming Dynasty,
there was a historical scene of close and warm connection created by Confucian
scholars and the people in Zen circle. The contact between them at least had
3 layers of meaning: the first one is the facilitation of the spreading of Buddhist
doctrines; the second one is the embodying of the trend that Buddhism is
helped to be added to Confucian learning; and the last one is the creation
result of the great collection Zen poems.
