The Water Cycleand the importance of water By Phillip Szerlag Central Michigan University Image from: http://www.sawater.com.au/SAWater/Education/OurWaterSystems/The+Water+Cycle.htm
The Steps Involved Evaporation and Transpiration Condensation (Clouds) Precipitation Back to the beginning! Information: http://www.mbgnet.net/fresh/cycle/cycle.htm
How does the sun help in this process? It is warm! What happens when its warm after it rains?
What is Evaporation? Liquid becomes gas and rises up into the atmosphere! Where can this happen? Lakes Rivers Oceans Streams Anywhere there is Liquid! Image from: http://www.savingwater.org/waterconnection/cycle2.htm
Want to test this out? Ask your parents Fill up a cup with water Put it outside on a Warm sunny day! Check it every little while and tell the class what happened! Example of how it works! Video link to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PskcoHbX1o
But wait! Water can get into the atmosphere another way too! Transpiration Plants absorb water Some of this water is evaporated off of leaves Image from: http://lajhsslab.com/biomes/two_ways_adapt.htm Information: http://www.mbgnet.net/fresh/cycle/cycle.htm
The next step is Condensation! Water in the Atmosphere begins to turn into a liquid It becomes suspended in air This is known as a cloud Image from: http://www.digital-cameras-help.com/clouds.html?id=4
Have any of you been close to a cloud before? How does it feel? Planes Fog Low cloud Feels warm and wet Planes Image from: http://thebeautybrains.com/2009/06/24/nanoparticle-breakthrough-makes-shower-mirror-fog-free/fog/
The next step is Precipitation Different forms of liquid begin to fall to earth These include: Snow Hail Rain Image from: http://www.fondriest.com/science_library-htm/precipitation.htm
Water can collect in various places This also includes “run off” Water flows down a hill or slope into any body of water Image from: http://www.deldot.gov/stormwater/description.shtml
Groundwater Water can soak into the ground It then can travel to any body of water Image from: http://academic.evergreen.edu/g/grossmaz/KIEPERME/
The Cycle starts over again! Video Image from: http://www.sawater.com.au/SAWater/Education/OurWaterSystems/The+Water+Cycle.htm Video from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_c0ZzZfC8c (NASA)
Water is Important! Here is why.. Water takes up 70% of the earth! Our bodies are made up water! Information: http://www.mbgnet.net/fresh/cycle/cycle.htm Image from: http://www.ngdir.ir/SiteLinks/Kids/html/co02_concept%20water_what%20is%20water_.html.htm
Water is needed to survive! Water can be used in various ways: Drinking Personal Hygiene Image from: http://triathlons.thefuntimesguide.com/2008/08/triathlon_nutrition.php
Ways to save water? Get with a partner and make a list of ways you can save water and we will share it with the class!
The End! All general Information from: http://www.mbgnet.net/fresh/cycle/cycle.htm
