2. How to Clean a Computer Screen
Safely Clean Desktop Computer Screens Including MS
Windows 8 Touch Screens
Before you poke your head under the sink for
something to use to clean your computers
screen (also known as a monitor), you should
first determine the type of computer screen
you have.
This has become more complicated in recent
years with new technology changes,
nevertheless, typical computer monitors fall
into two basic categories nowadays and these
are known as CRT or LCD type screens.
Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors are easily
spotted as they are the older models. They are
larger and bulkier than their modern flat-
screen successors.
What's more, CRT screens are made of glass, which means they can be
cleaned with any one of a number of products made specifically for
glass. But, they can also be cleaned using the modern screen cleaning
products used for the plastic screens found in flat-screen monitors, as
described below:-
1. To clean your computer screen, first turn off the monitor or completely
shut down the computer to easily identify the dirt in the computer
monitor.
2. Use a clean microfiber cloth or a really soft clean cotton rag, with a
cleaning liquid which the cleaning fluid manufacturer states is suitable
for all modern flat screen computers. Spray or pour, a little of the liquid
onto the clean cloth allowing it to soak-in until the cloth is slightly damp,
and begin to wipe the picture display surface of the monitor once it has

switched-off. (Other monitor surfaces - the top, sides, back, and front
bezel, should also be wiped, but this is usually done later after the
display area is clean.)
3. Use a gentle rotating action to gently rub the whole of the screen
display area, and if necessary add more cleaning fluid as the cloth
becomes dry. As the cloth picks up dirt (especially if the screen is
heavily soiled), you will need to move the cloth around in your hand, in
order to apply fresh clean areas of the cloth.
4. If some areas have a patina of dirt which does not immediately come
away from the surface it may be necessary to make the cloth slightly
damper, so that the really dirty patches become fully moistened. Allow
the fluid a few moments to soak in and gently rub the surface again until
the recalcitrant dirt comes off. Never rush this process by increasing the
pressure on the cloth as this may cause minute scratching of the surface
on flat screen displays.
5. Make sure the monitor is dry before you turn it back on, so that there
won't be any possibility that you might electrocute yourself!
2. How to Clean a Laptop Screen
The Method for Cleaning a Laptop is the Same as for a Computer
Screen Except for:

method of cleaning a
Laptop Screen is
Identical to the
Instructions in 1.
above, don't be
tempted to move the
cloth over the
keyboard at the
same time as
cleaning the screen.

Always clean the screen with a fresh cloth. If at all possible use a
different cloth for the keyboard, or leave the keyboard until you have
finished the screen. The reason for this is that the cloth that wipes over
the keyboard will usually pick up a surprising amount of particulate
material. Bits of dried food and even grit, may be present on the
keyboard. So, it's NOT a good idea to transfer keyboard dirt
inadvertently to the laptop's screen, as surface scratching may be the
result.
- On a laptop the keyboard is very close to the screen, so take care not
to drip the cleaning fluid onto the keyboard while wetting the screen
cleaning cloth.
Other than remembering the points we make above, we recommend that
our readers clean a laptop computer in the same way as for any
computer, as described in 1., above.
3. How to Clean CDs and DVDs
Do You Have CDs and DVDs That Won't "Read" or "Play"
– These May Possibly Be Rescued By the Correct Cleaning
It is undeniably a very frustrating experience be listening to a CD, or
watching a DVD when it stops playing due to dirt, or dirt induced
scratches. We are here to tell you that such events should become very
rare if you regularly clean your lenses.
Many people are also confused by
the requirements for cleaning CDs
and DVDs and that's “clean them
often” because there are two
elements which require cleaning and
both need to be clean before a CD
or DVD can be successfully used.
There are two discrete sets of
cleaning products which are sold for
two different cleaning functions, as
follows:

Cleaning of the Surface of the CD or DVD
A. cleaning of the surface of the CD or DVD is carried out (using water if
heavily finger contact soiled on a microfiber cloth), or if it is only dusty,
just a microfiber cloth is often sufficient. Lens solutions suitable for flat
screen use and for eyeglasses, can also be used instead of water.
Attending to the Cleaning Demands of the Surface of the Laser
Head
The Laser Disc reading head inside the CD or DVD unit itself may
become dirty, usually only dust accumulates which is easily cleaned by a
head cleaning disc. But cleaning may be more difficult, especially after
the computer or console has been kept for a long period in a room in
which a family carries out a lot of frying, say close to a kitchen area.
For CD and DVD/ Blu-ray disc head cleaning use, it is possible to buy
head-cleaning discs.
It is quite common for people to clean just the CD and DVD discs and to
state that the cleaning product did no good when the laser-head was still
dirty, and the opposite can occur when only a laser-head cleaner is used
but the discs are at fault.
So, it is not uncommon for CD and DVD cleaner users to wrongly state
in reviews that these products are ineffective. Clearly, both the laser
head AND the discs need to be adequately clean for the discs to be read
successfully by the computer.
Conclusion
When you are cleaning CDs and DVDs, always be sensitive to the fact
that the Laser Disc must be clean AND the Laser Reading Head inside
the computer must be clean. If either one is dirty the disc will fail to work.
Of course, even if both the Laser Head and the Disc are clean and the
computer fails to read all the discs which are tried, it is also possible that
the Laser Head itself is faulty and if that is the case the only way to get
the computer, X-Box or their console to work is to replace the whole disc
reader unit within the computer, with a new one.

4. Cleaning Tips

2. When the computer is
switched off you can see the
dirt and dust much easier and
it saves damaging the screen
when the pixels are firing.

3. The majority of computer

monitors which are
manufactured from a
particular type of plastic
which can easily be scratched if you use scrubbers, abrasive chemicals or even towels
to clean them.
4. Computer screens must be treated gently, to avoid the risk of causing damage by
scratching the surface.
5. If your computer does is an old Cathode Ray Tube type, then it is always best to
turn off the computer on the "Start Button" (Windows PCs). The start button is
located in the lower left corner of your screen. Click the start button and then select
"shut down". Turning it off this way is always preferable and will help preserve the
life of your computer.
6. Don't forget that your Computer Screen whether it operates on TFT (older flat
screens mostly), LCD, or Plasma technology is an expensive component, which
makes it well worthwhile taking a bit of special care when cleaning it.
