Letter of reference for Stephan Saaltink
Stephan Saaltink is one of the most distinguished senior graphic and editorial designers of the
Netherlands. From 2007 to 2010, he worked as the vice chairman of the Willem de Kooning
Academy in Rotterdam. As the course director of the Media Design programme of the Piet Zwart
Institute, the graduate school of the Willem de Kooning Academy, I worked under direct
supervision of Mr. Saaltink and had meetings with him at least once per week. He was the best
supervisor I had in my professional life: fair, competent, with good critical vision, hard-working.
His leave was a great loss for our school.
Mr. Saaltink has a long-time teaching experience and, as I have seen from guest teaching sessions in
our media design master programme, is very thorough in his preparation. He is the rare example of
a graphic designer who is an expert classical typographer but at the same time has advanced new
media skills, including computer programming, and who is at home in international (including non-
European) design cultures.
Unlike many of his colleagues, he is thinking of graphic design as a field of constant innovation.
His communication and supervision of students is non-hierarchical but based on his natural
authority of expertise. Many leading younger-generation Dutch graphic designers have studied
under his guidance and supervision, and many of them have become true innovators in their field.
Stephan Saaltink is fully qualified for all the tasks of a Senior Lecturer. At our school, he has been
responsible for curriculum development, has collaborated with our research programs and is
experienced in acquiring external funding. Effectively, he has been the manager of our school (with
2,100 students) and is highly competent for all managerial and networking tasks.
With kind regards,
Florian Cramer
