Information Question Formation With Have.

What does Alfred have? What do you have?
Alfred has asthma. I have a headache.

When you ask an information question, use the base form of have.

                 What + do/does + subject + have?
                 What does Alfred have?
                 What do you have?

The verb that changes form in an information question is do. It changes according to the subject.

What do I have? What do we have?
What do you have? What do they have?
                    What does he have?
                    What does she have?

In an information question, do/does comes before the subject and have comes after the subject.

What does Elizabeth have? What does Elizabeth have?

Don’t forget to use the base form of have.

What do I have? What do we have?
What do you have? What do they have?
                    What does he have?
                    What does she have?
                    What does Alfred have?
                    What does Abigail have?

Fill in the blank with the correct form of have. Choose a partner and practice asking and answering the questions.

                                                       Talking About Health Problems
                                                                Card Game

Instructions. This card game uses name cards (see pages 5and 6) and health problem cards (see page7).

1. This game can be played in groups of 2, 3, or 4.

2. Copy a set of pages 5 through 7 for each group of card players. Cut out the cards.

3. Shuffle the name cards and place them in the middle of the table.

4. Shuffle the heath problem cards and deal them out evenly to the players.

5. The first player turns up a name card from the pile and places it in the middle of the table.

6. The first player decides which health problem card in his/her own hand to use. He/She also decides to which
player to ask a question. This question is formed from both the name card and the health problem card chosen.

Example:
Fred, Wilma, Betty, and Barney are playing the card game.
Fred draws a name card. The name card is Mary.
Fred chooses a health problem card from his own hand. He has these cards: asthma, a cold, a backache, and a
headache. Fred chooses a cold.
Fred decides to whom he would like to ask a question. Fred decides to ask Barney a question. Fred asks Barney,
“What does Mary have?”.

7. The second player answers by guessing what the selected health problem card is. If the second player answers
using the selected health problem, then the first player discards that health problem card. If the second player does
not guess the selected health problem, the first player keeps that card without showing it to the group.

Example:
Fred asks Barney, “What does Mary have?”.
Barney tries to guess what the health problem is.
If Barney answers, “Mary has a cold”, then Fred says, “Yes she does”.
Fred discards the card that says a cold.
If Barney answers, “Mary has chicken pox” , then Fred says, “No, she doesn’t”.
Fred keeps the card that says a cold. Fred does not show this card to the group.

8. The first player to discard all of his/her cards wins the game.

  • 4. ESL Helpful Handouts The Verb Have Page 4 of 7 Talking About Health Problems Card Game Instructions. He/She also decides to which player to ask a question. This question is formed from both the name card and the health problem card chosen. Example: Fred, Wilma, Betty, and Barney are playing the card game. Fred draws a name card. The name card is Mary. Fred chooses a health problem card from his own hand. He has these cards: asthma, a cold, a backache, and a headache. Fred chooses a cold. Fred decides to whom he would like to ask a question. Fred decides to ask Barney a question. Fred asks Barney, “What does Mary have?”. 7. The second player answers by guessing what the selected health problem card is. If the second player answers using the selected health problem, then the first player discards that health problem card. If the second player does not guess the selected health problem, the first player keeps that card without showing it to the group. Example: Fred asks Barney, “What does Mary have?”.
