2. The purpose of today
With the draft Programmes of Study in mind ...
> To allow you to immerse yourself in computation thinking
> To join workshops where good practice will be showcased
> To let you contribute to the new Hampshire computing
curriculum and service development
3. What is computing?
The systematic study of
algorithmic processes that
describe and transform
information.
‘Computing as a
Discipline’
Peter J Denning et al
4. IT
The term ‘ICT’ is now
also used to refer to the convergence of
audio-visual
and telephone networks with computer
networks through
a single cabling or link system.
6. Computer science is no more about
computers than astronomy is about
telescopes, biology is about
microscopes or chemistry
is about beakers and test tubes.
Science is not about tools, it is about
how we use them and
what we find out when we do.

Parberry, (Computing Research
News, 1993)

7. We want our children to
understand and play an active
role in the digital world that surrounds
them, not to be
passive consumers of opaque
and mysterious technology.
‘Shut Down or Restart?’
The Royal Society
16. How do we make Computing accessible?
It’s all about
the context

NEXT THREE SLIDES ANDY Did the task you have just engaged with make you think? Do you think some of the tasks that were set under ICT make you think? Why? What was the focus of your thinking during the task? ------ Think about your current perception of ICT and compare with your current perception of what ‘Computing’ means to you. ------ Show contents of control ‘flightbox’ -----

SUE I just want to show you a brief video clip that one of my secondary NQTs, who is here shared with me last week
SUE Computing develops learning and thinking. It is not restrictive – but all about context. Teachers need to provide the context/learning opportunity. Not a restrictive procedure. Think of LOGO. How would you teach using LOGO. Do we give answers or problem solving opportunity? Computers don’t just do one thing.
