No, I don’t mean taking a couple hours off on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day before hopping back on your laptop to “answer a couple emails.” I mean a whole day. Taking Time for Health and the Holidays
If you’re a small business owner I welcome you to give your comments and
f eedback to this article below. When was the last time you took time f or
health and the holidays? No, I don’t mean taking a couple hours of f on
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day bef ore hopping back on your laptop to
“answer a couple emails.” I mean a whole day. Yes, an entire day devoted to
either your health or a holiday. Taking time f or health and the holidays is
vitally important to your well-being.
To the international business owners, I don’t know how the healthcare
system works in your countries. As an American, we f ace (plenty of ) our own
challenges. Healthcare is not socialized, and of ten small business owners
choose not to be insured due to the high cost of insurance. For example,
when setting up our own independent health insurance last year we were
f aced with the questions “Do we, or don’t we, add maternity care to our
health insurance plan?” It was going to be an extra $1,800 a month. We
thought we were f inished trying to add to our f amily, so we opted not to add
it. Little did we know our daughter, Nevaeh, would be added to our f amily just
a little over nine months later. GULP.
Many business owners stall hiring help f or what f eels like an eternity. Unf ortunately, when sickness pays a visit
there is nobody there to help. The solo business owner f eels pressure to continue working, and of ten his/her
illness lingers on f or days longer than it should of because of stress. Does this sound like you?
Taking time f or health and holidays gives your body and mind the necessary stress relief is needs to maintain
(better) health f or the rest of the year. Think about it this way: Do NFL players play all year? No! They get a
(short) break between the end of their season and the start of training. Do MLB players play all year? No! They
also have a break between the end of their season and the beginning of Spring Training. Does this mean they
don’t exercise during the of f -season? No. Conditioning is necessary to stay in shape, physically and mentally.
As small business owners, we may not make millions of dollars like the superstar athletes, and we may not
have an extended of f season. However taking time f or health and holidays is as important f or us as it is f or
them.
This Christmas and/or New Year, I encourage you to give yourself a break. Put your f eet up f or the day, watch
an all day marathon of Austin Powers, Fast and the Furious, Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, and enjoy your
time with f riends and f amily. I guarantee in 30 years you will remember the days you took of f more than you
remember the days you worked.
