Level 5 -
Functional Skills
Literacy Numeracy ICT
Writing Instructions Shape and Space Sequencing Instructions
Personal Learning and Thinking objectives SEAL objectives
Knowing the angles and sides of shapes.
Learning objectives (WALT)
All – To determine what shapes can be made using ‘Scratch’ and apply the appropriate controls. Identify and
Select.
Most –To know what sequences will make what shapes and know how to change the size and colour.
Review.
Some –To build upon the making of shapes using ‘scratch’ to create patterns and show evidence of
evaluation. Organise and check accuracy. Fit for purpose/audience.
Learning Outcomes (WILF)
All will have created simple shapes using ‘Scratch’.
Most will have experimented with different controls to create more complex shapes and change the appearance of
shapes
Some will have made different patterns using the knowledge of making shapes and the ‘pen’ control.
TIBS:
To improve your knowledge of basic shapes and how this can be applied in programming.
Potential Errors and Misconceptions
Some may not know the attributes of certain shapes so may need to be reminded of this.

Differentiation: Presentation (Teacher)
Pupils will be working through this at their own
pace. Pupils of higher ability should be
encouraged to make alterations to the patterns
and use more complex shapes
Literacy/Numeracy/other Links Assessment Strategies to Enhance Learning
Literacy: reading: 2.2 a, d writing: 2.3, a Question and answer.
Numeracy: Q1 How many degrees will we need to turn to make
this shape?
Citizenship:
Q2 How can we change the size of this shape or the
colour?

Extension Work Homework
To create different patterns using complex shapes
in ‘Scratch’. Think of a complex pattern which you could make using
scrach and bring in the sequence you would use for this
to the next lesson.

Teaching and Learning Activities
Check uniform as students enter classroom in orderly manner.
(10:00 – 10:05) Bell Activity
5 mins
Pupils will have cards on their tables. Some will be pictures of shapes, some will be
descriptive of the shape. They will be asked to match these us as quickly as possible before
the lesson begins.
(10:05 – 10:15) Starter Activity
10 mins
Pupils will be shown how to use the pen control by the teacher. They will be shown how to
create basic shapes and shown that the angle size of different shapes is important in
getting the squence correct. They will be shown how to use the ‘forever’ control so that the
shape will be continuously drawn by the sprite.
(10:15 – 10:50) Main Activity
35 mins
Pupils will work through the PowerPoint show creating their own shapes. They will start by
creating basic shapes and then move on to more complex shapes. They will be asked to
think about what patterns could be made using these shapes and how this could be
achieved using a sequence of instructions in scratch. Pupils should also move on to
changing the colour and the size of the shapes to create dfferent effects and patterns.
Plenary
(10:50 – 11:00)
10 mins Pupils will be asked to show their patterns to the rest of the group. They will also be shown
some patterns which have been created using scratch and asked what sequence may have
made this pattern.
Students dismissed in an orderly manner.
