Scope of coverage of RSLs
• National regulations
• Regional/local regulations
• Industry sector - e.g., AAFA, BIFMA)
• Customized RSLs
System for updating
• System for routine updates
• Frequency of updates (daily,
weekly, etc.)
RSL Limitations
• Regulatory lists often lag scientific
knowledge of chemical hazards
• Sole reliance on regulatory RSLs
may lead to regrettable
substitutions
“Bisphenol-A free” products using
equally hazardous BPS
2. RSL Inventories
Are important but have limitations

Software Selection: Your goals, budget, and sector will
influence your selection
29. Steps to assess & select vendors
1. Review vendors to identify which align best with your
priorities/requirements
– Use vendor summaries in report appendix for preliminary
assessment
– Use report checklist to clarify how vendor capabilities match your
needs
2. Evaluate vendor demos, details of what they offer, costs

Chemicals of concern 46%
Regulatory: Federal & state regulations on hazardous chemicals have been in place for decades. But major new international and state initiatives are requiring an entirely new degree of chemicals reporting and transparency, as well as adding new restrictions. For example, under the EU’s comprehensive REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulation information on over 9,000 chemicals has been reported to the EU, and restrictions have already been placed on use of over 100 chemicals. China and South Korea have both adopted versions of the REACH regulation for companies manufacturing or importing chemicals into their countries. Many states have adopted new reporting requirements for, or restrictions on the use of, hazardous chemicals; as the map illustrates, many additional state regulations are under consideration.
ZDHC: Members of ZDHC have pledged to eliminate 11 classes of chemicals from their supply chain by 2020. As part of the drive to achieve this goal, they are requiring their suppliers to publically state their intake and releases to the environment of any of these chemicals. Levis is publishing the data from their suppliers on Levis website, and auditing to ensure accuracy. Nike and others are doing the same; even large suppliers are now faced with uniform chemical restrictions simultaneously from many of their largest customers.
