Open days – both at course providers (chance to see a Law Careers Adviser – Dates for diary, College of Law Open Days eg 4 th Oct, 15 th and 25 th Nov) and at firms/chambers. We will advertise some on CDEC site but need to keep eyes peeled on firms/chambers you are interested in. Student Law Body – examples of networking events they have put on. Volunteering – eg Project V have opportunities with the Youth Offending Team, would get you in contact with the legal system. Other schemes that you can get involved in around the edges of the system are things like the Sussex Independent Custody Visitor scheme. Worth also thinking about what opportunities will be available at your LPC/BVC provider eg the College of Law has Legal advice centres from which they run advice centres – answering legal enquiries from the general public. This advice and casework programme gives you valuable first-hand experience of client relationships, legal research and drafting – particularly useful for LPC students. Court visit – there is a magistrates court in Lewes where you can go and view public cases for contact details see www.hmcourts-service + Lewes Combined court centre Law Fairs – our one. National Pupillage Fair – took place in March this year. Use these as a way to network. Impress them by finding out about their firm before you talk to them. Networking – possible to build contacts here. Some tutors may have interesting contacts working out in practice. Is sometimes worth asking them! Think about everyone you know and ask them who they know! Also the Student Law Body – growing body that is keen to build links with local firms
Smaller firms may ask for speculative approaches/ CV and covering letter and not all will have had a July 2010 deadline- only the large firms for 2012.
