Module-1 Different Stages of a Project Lifecycle
Projects may vary both in
Finish terms of scope and
complexity, but every planned
project steps through a series
of stages from start to finish.

7. CID-01 Project Management
Module-1 Project Initiation
• Initiation is the first stage
in the project lifecycle.
• In this stage, the outputs
expected from the project
are defined as are critical
success factors that will
enable it.
8. CID-01 Project Management
Module-1 Project Planning
Scope Delivery
The Project Management team defines
the scope of the project and decides on
the best approach to deliver the desired
outputs.
9. CID-01 Project Management
Module-1 Project Planning
•The Project Lead then
selects the team
members based on their
skills, experience, and
compatibility with the
needs of the project.
• Commonly used tools or
methods in the Initiation
stage include the
Business Plan, the
Project Framework (or
Overview), and Milestone
Reviews.
10. CID-01 Project Management
Module-1 Project Execution
• This is followed by a Planning
stage where the project is
broken down into smaller tasks.
• Key activities typically include
identification of all tasks, the
assignment of those tasks to
resources, a timeline for
completing them, an analysis of
the risks, and the expected
quality for the deliverables
associated with each task.
11. CID-01 Project Management
Module-1 Project Execution
• Further, the governance process is
outlined, and the key stakeholders
and reporting structures are put in
place.
• Commonly used project
management tools and methods in
this stage include the Business Plan
and Milestone Reviews.
12. CID-01 Project Management
Module-1 Project Execution
• The next stage in the lifecycle is
Execution.
• In this stage, the planned
solution is implemented by the
team.
•The project activities are
controlled and directed to
produce the desired outputs.
•Typically, the Execution stage
begins with the creation of the
design, or the outline of the
proposed solution, at the highest
level.
13. CID-01 Project Management
Module-1 Project Implementation
• Based on the agreed design,
the team executes the tasks to
arrive at the final solution.
• The implementation stage is
characterized by the creation of
prototypes, testing, and
reviews.
• The most common tools or
methods used in the Execution
stage are Risk Analysis and
Score Cards, the Business Plan
and Milestone Reviews.
14. CID-01 Project Management
Module-1 Project Closure
• The last stage in the lifecycle is
Closure where the project is
completed and the outputs are
delivered to the client.
• Primarily, this stage involves
client acceptance of the final
product. However, there are
other important activities that the
Project Team must perform.
• This includes rewarding the
team, preparing a list of lessons
learned, releasing project
resources, and ensuring a formal
project closure notification.
15. CID-01 Project Management
Module-1 Project Closure
By organizing project activities into
different stages, the Project Team
can efficiently plan and organize
resources, measure the
achievement of project goals with
relevant metrics, anticipate risks,
and make timely decisions ensure
successful completion of the
project.
