Google now puts more emphasis on social sharing: likes, tweets, and shares, considering it as an endorsement of your brand. It’s now more important than ever to: write content that inspires people to share, and monitor your social media traffic using Google Analytics.
If you have a website then having Google Analytics is a must. View our Guide to Google Analytics. The value of who visits your site, where they are coming from and how long they stay engaged, can assist you in transforming thosem visits into customers, engaged users and followers.

4. Social Sharing Analytics
Webmasters have access to social sharing data via Google’s social
plug–in tracking capabilities for Facebook, Twitter, and Google +1.
What are social plug–ins?
Social plug–ins are tools that allow users to share your website’s
content via social platforms.
What activities are tracked in Google Analytics Social Reports?
• Google +1
• “Tweets” (Twitter)
• “Likes”, “Unlikes”, “Shares” (Facebook)
5. Social Sharing Analytics
Measuring social interactions:
Social interaction is when a visitor to your website likes your page
on Facebook, or clicks the Twitter button or Google’s +1, or even a
share on LinkedIn.
If your using the +1 button, Google Analytics provides integrated
reporting right out of the box. So if you have set up both Google +1
and the latest version of Google Analytics on the same page, all
+1 social interactions will be automatically reported, no extra
setting up necessary.
Reporting for other networks like Facebook or Twitter, is a little
more work and you’ll need to integrate Google Analytics with each
network button.
6. Social Sharing Analytics
The first thing you need to know is that the social
reports run off goals within Google Analytics.
If you already have goals set up, your reports (found
by clicking Standard Reports > Traffic Sources >
Social > Overview) should already be showing you
some data, however if your only seeing $0 values, you
need to create some goals.
We won’t go to in depth on how to create goals here
as we covered that in our Google Analytics tutorial so
if you haven’t checked that out we suggest you do so.
7. Social Sharing Analytics
Next you’ll need to use the social
tracking code or you’ll just see lots of
Google+ events.
Supernova Tip: This isn’t data that I
would review daily. Maybe bi-weekly or
monthly. Unless you needed it sooner.
8. Social Sharing Analytics
To send social interaction data to Google Analytics
we call the _trackSocial() method wherever we have
added the share button/social plugin:
Read our blog: Using Google Analytics
to Monitor Your Social Media Traffic
9. Social Sharing Analytics
We won’t go into fine details here because it is a lot of code
and JavaScript and if you are not all that familiar with the
coding aspect of your site, it will look like another language
all together (in fact, it is!)
• See the Facebook Developer Docs on loading the like
Button.
• See the Twitter Developers Docs on loading the Tweet
Button
• See the LinkedIn Plugin Developer to get a Share
Button
• Visit Google’s Social Analytics page for a closer look at
the code involved in tracking you social media buttons.

10. Social Sharing Analytics
With social media being used
every minute of the day and
driving traffic to your site, it is an
invaluable metric that should be
tracked and reviewed. With this,
you can determine what impact
these buttons have on your site
and your business.
