Chapter 5: Reading and Information Literacy
1. What are some of the ways to become a Critical Internet searcher
- Conduct an information search, use search engines like google, learn about academic
directories, also ask librarians about unique academic search engines and also
experiment with different search engines. You can also have a search strategy, save
or bookmark the best web sites, skim sites to evaluate their relevance and credibility.
2. Complete the questions on slide #32.
A. What effects go beyond you world?
- Anything that happens when I am not present at the time the effect happens.
B. How can you become a literacy volunteer in your community?
- Go out you comfort zone and become more active in your community. Start with a
library and volunteer yourself with different kids throughout the neighborhood that
need help with literacy.
C. What can you learn from Gary’s case about SQ3R and being an information
literate reader?
- By going out of your comfort zone doing things you always do, you can find out that
some things you think you can’t do you realize that you can do them after all and you
can be really good at it.
3. Explain the ways that you would use to conduct an information search?
2. - I would start off with books first. There is a lot of information in books that you
sometimes cannot find online. Also I would use different resources of teachers and
librarians for information also. They have a lot of ideas and ways for you to find
what you are looking for. Using the internet is the easiest way of course. By using a
search engine and typing in key words, you find just about anything that you need
online. When I do use a search engine, sometimes I like to write down specific
information throughout the different passages so that way in case I forget anything I
can go back to my notes that jotted down instead of going back through a whole
passage. Another good way is to talk with fellow students. A lot of times the
information I have may be totally different from what they have so that way we can
compare and see the differences that we have in our work.
