What kind of Media institution might distribute your media product and why?
1. Q.) What kind of Media
institution might distribute your
media product and why?
EVALUATION QUESTIONS
2. Research on Publishers
I researched 3 different magazine publishers
in detail, namely: IPC Media, Bauer Media
and Future plc.
3. IPC Media
IPC Media publishes over 60 iconic media brands,
and has more consumers than any other magazine
publisher in the UK. It publishes in many countries
and many categories of magazines, including music
magazines. IPC owns a collection of websites that
are visited by over 25 million users every month.
Also, IPC is a subsidiary of Time – Warner, which is
one of the biggest publishers in the world. This
gives IPC a huge advantage for publishing.
4. Initially, I thought IPC Media would be the best choice since
it’s obviously the most successful publisher in the UK. I
later realized that I could not have my magazine published
by IPC as the as they already publish a music magazine in
the same genre and with the same audience as my music
magazine. IPC would not be willing to publish a magazine
similar to one it already produces. This is because they’d b
looking to publish magazines that could compete with
other companies.
IPC Media is the publisher for
popular rock-magazine ‘NME’. The
average age is 24 years old,
meaning the magazine targets
teenagers and young adults.
5. Bauer Media
Like IPC, Bauer Media is a multi-national publishing
company. It publishes over 300 magazines in 15 different
countries, as well as online. I didn’t choose Bauer as a
publisher for my magazine as it too had a rock genre music
magazine based at a young audience. No publisher would
publish the same kind of magazine, that would just be the
company competing with themselves.
Bauer Media publishes
KERRANG, a rock magazine
popular amongst 15-24 year
olds, which is the same as my
rock magazine.
6. Future plc
Future is an international media group, leading in
digital business. Future exports over 218
publications, many of which have recognizable
identities. I settled with choosing Future as a
suitable publisher for my magazine because
Future plc does not publish any rock magazine for
15-25 year olds. Also, Future is beneficial when It
comes to digital publishing. In the not to distant
future most magazines will only b available online.
7. Possible Distribution Locations
Although I’d plan is to publish the magazine across the UK at least, It is possible
to publish internationally. Since the audience range is quite wide and isn’t a
certain demographic nation. Future can publish across Europe, In the States and
also Australia.
8. Magazine Markets
Future Plc itself would probably be involved with
having the magazine published but the magazine
would still need to be printed and distributed.
There are several printing companies across the UK
which print on matte and gloss paper. I personally
prefer gloss because I think it makes the magazine
more durable and more attractive to readers.
After printing the magazines can be transported,
shipped to other countries etc.
9. Magazine Markets
I wanted my magazine to be published and
distributed throughout the UK. From my audience
survey results I found out where the readers would
buy my magazine.
Inn Zone is a national distributor which has
connections to various shops and newsagents. It
could be possible to have them distribute my
magazine across the UK.
