1. Nettle caterpillar (Setora nitens)
The nettle caterpillars are young stages (known as larvae) of certain moths. They are
characterized by their stinging spines which are most painful to touch and can cause nettle
rash on human skin. Most of them are brightly coloured (such as bluish or greenish), and
sometimes with stripes. They are sometimes called “slug caterpillars‟ and are locally known
as ulat bulu.
Damage on host :
Nettle caterpillars feed on the leaves of oil palm and coconut. In serious attack only the
midrib remains.
Control technique :
Recommended chemicals may be applied in the following ways:
1. Aerial spraying
2. Ground spraying (mist blowers)
3. Trunk injection
