- This presentation is designed to make you think about business models and looking at startups from a business, (how do I make money) perspective. - I collect entrepreneurial stories and business models. I am going to share them with you.
- Engaged the audience by asking them their observations on the differences.
- This is an amazing place, but what I find really amazing is how motivated the staff are to keep control of a complex error prone process. Compare this to the MacDonalds story “is this for here, or to go?”
- I will talk about all of these companies. Almost all were started in the past 2 or 3 years. Almost all by young people in Canada. I will discuss technologies like wireless, twitter, and SEO.
- 45M Google searches a month for “Dating”. 4.5M Google searches a month for “online dating”. ½ of 1% of 1M searches results in $25K per month. Three steps: SEO long tail Content capture and lead info capture Bidding
- 1M visits a day, 1,000 new members a day. ½ of 1% of 1M searches results in $25K A DAY! This is run by 2 people using Ruby on Rails.
- Who is the guy in the bottom? How does he make money with Twitter? I saw him talk at PMA in LA in Feb
- Ali’s dad ran a drug store
- All are great businesses, but all are built servicing a market they know – schools.
- Questions: Which impress you? Why? which don’t impress? How do you start when you know the model up front? Identify good qualities How do you find a model? What are the funding implications? How do you assess risk? What role does risk play? What role does business skills have in a startup? What other models do you want to share? How does this affect building a business plan? How does this affect priorities?
