The team created an educational game prototype focused on childhood nutrition to help address obesity. They conducted research, got expert advice, developed ideas, and iterated on a summer camp-themed game through multiple playtests with over 90 kids. Playtests helped improve the interface, showed the value of minigames and tutorials, and confirmed kids enjoyed and understood the content. While more work is needed, the team made improvements and seeks partners to further develop the prototype.
24. Goals
• Help attack childhood obesity in America.
• Create a prototype of an educational
game focusing on nutrition.
• What we want kids to understand:
• Existence of food groups.
• Daily balance of food groups.
• Relationship of food and body and exercise
(Calories).
25. Metrics for Success
• Kids enjoy our game.
• Kids understand what we are trying to
teach them.
• Create an effective prototype that the
could be pursued further.

51. Playtest Results...
• ...helped us figure out the user interface.
• ...showed us the importance of mini-
games.
• ...showed us the importance of visuals,
voice over, and tutorials.
• ...showed us that kids enjoyed and
understood what we are building.
55. Challenges
• This is a very American problem, and
we only had one US citizen on the team.
• This is also a generational problem.
• This looks like a simple project but it is
hard to get across.
• Complexity vs. Flexability
56. 5 Things We Did Right
• Took advantage of team members skills.
• Brainstorming process.
• Iterative design based off of playtesting.
• UI overhaul late in the process.
• Made improvements on the current
generation of nutrition games.
57. Next Steps
• Looking to partner with experts to add
content.
• Looking for funding and other ways
this could be developed further.
Hello I am Steve Geist and I am very excited to be here.\nJust A little about my background. I earned a BFA in Illustration, and I spent a few years working in the front end of the innovation pipeline, mainly as a producer and helping facilitate brainstorming sessions.\n

So, My love for entertainment and video games brought me to Carnegie Mellon’s Entertainment Technology Center. At the ETC students are brought from many different backgrounds to work together on interdisciplinary teams on semester long project. \n\nThese Projects can either be Client based projects, faculty championed projects, or Student pitch projects.\n\nThe ETC is based in Pittsburgh PA, but we have had projects held all over the world. Every semester we have projects in Silicon Valley and Osaka Japan. We have also had projects based in Barcelona, Australia, and Redman WA.\nAnd the students at the ETC come from all over the world, from many different countries. \n

We realized that this is a HUGE problem, and a challenging one.\nKids have engrained thoughts and feelings about food, which are hard to overcome.\nCurrently 1/3 Kids in the US are overweight or obese.\nWhich is three times as many kids as when I was born.\n
So our goals were set up to try and educate kids about nutrition and exercise to help fight this crisis. We know there is no “Silver Bullet” for this problem, but our game has helped attack childhood obesity in America.\nTo do this we have created a prototype of an educational game focusing on nutrition.\n \n
Kids enjoy the game\nUnderstand\nwants to take further\n
We started to take on this task by doing a lot of research.\nWe looked at fitness games, and we took a field trip to the Children’s Museum. We looked at the entries and winners for the Apps for Healthy Kids competition that was held over the summer. While we are not a part of that competition, we did take a lot of inspiration from it.\nWe also looked at blast off, a game created by the US Department of Agriculture. This game we found very interesting because it had some good ideas, but it lacked all motivation and any sense of actually creating a menu. We wanted to see if we could do a similar idea, but better.\nAnd we were highly inspired by some movies that highlight nutrition. Here is a clip from Super Size me that highlights some of the problems we saw with childhood nutrition. \n\n
As you can see children are engrained with thoughts and feelings towards the food that can be hard to overcome especially in a video game. \n

That led us to the question of innovation vs. distribution.\nWe thought about innovation vs. distribution\nWe could either create a game that uses a new platform or create something that any kid in the US could play.\nBut when we looked at our time frame and our teams skillset. None of us were intense programmers. \n We decided that getting a game in kids hands was more important\n\n\n

Broad Demographic\n Started with Kids in USA\n Quickly Narrowed it down to 6-12\n After first playtest we decided to focus on kids ages 8-10\n Because this is when kids start to learn about nutrition and really start to make choices around food.\n There may be some spill over\n \nYoung as possible\n

We landed on the idea of a game about Food Choices\nSummer Camp Idea\nBranding our game around “Camp Eatapita”\n
After brainstorming we decided we were going to create a 5 day summer camp experience that is played in about 15 minutes. \nThis is the first concept of our game\n-\nThis is what we showed at quarters\n-\nThis is Halves\n-\nand here is what we showed at Softs\n\n\n

7 major playtests with Kids\n\nlocal children’s museums\n\nBoys and girls clubs and schools\n
We tested with 94 kids this semester and we feel that\n\n76 Kids fell into an appropriate age for this game.\n\n
This is the break down of Ethnicity and Gender. \nAlong with this data we also asked a lot of questions about what kids liked to eat and often ate. We tried to get a sense of how kids felt about food.\n
Here is a clip from a playtest right after halves:\n-\n
As you can see it has been very hard to engage kids around a nutrition game. This Frustrated us a lot. But as we moved forward playtest started improving with our iterations. Here is a Clip from one of our final playtest.\n\n
As you can see the improvements we made on the game help us engage kids more and the really began enjoying our game.\n
Steve\n
Steve\n
Steve\nWe asked kids a lot of questions when they playtested.\nThis is a breakdown of how ids responded to the question \n“Would you play again?” by Playtest session\nAs you can see kids liked it more and more as we went through the semester.\n
So Playtesting helped us figure out how kids understood and used our user interface.\n\nIt showed us that kids really enjoyed the mini-games.\n\nIt showed us how improtant it was to play with voice over and proper instructions, Kids got the game right away when we had this. \n\nAnd it showed us that kids really did enjoy and understand the game we were creating.\n\n
I am going to show you a simplified demo that will go through two days of our experience.\n\n\n
So after you login you go through a tutorial that we have simplified in the last week.\nYou are then put into our new user interface.\nYou now go through 5 days and select each part of the meal instead of picking between two meals. This change came from the issue we were having all semester, which is that it was very hard to balance the meals.\nAfter you select three meals you go into an adventure.\nFor the purpose of this demo we are going to go through one more day and then the game will end.\nAfter you finish the game, you are given a certificate which you can then print out to hang on your refrigerator.  This could be an easy place to have a message to visit the USDA’s website for more information.\n
We also created a back end system that allows our game to be incredibly flexible, you can add any food item and nutritional information right into the game.\n\n
This was not an easy semester, at times it was even frustrating. \nSome of the challenges we faced were:\nThis is a very american problem and I am the only American on the Team.\nThis is also a generational problem, Obesity has become more of an issue with kids than it ever has before, and we are not facing the issue like kids are today.\nAnd lastly this looks like an easy idea, “Flash nutrition game” \nBut it is not that easy, and that is why most nutrition games are not very good. \nBut we feel that w have created a good solution for a difficult problem.\n
So things we did right this semester.\nWe took advantage of team members skills\nWe all really enjoyed the brainstorming process at the early stages of our project. and we came up with a lot of solid game ideas.\nWhen we picked the game idea we were going to develop, we made it an iterative process, based off of playtest feedback. And we kept iterating until we got it right.\nThe big changes to our UI since halves were a HUGE improvemnt, and we all really like the direction the game is heading. \nOver all we feel that our game has made improvments on other nutrition games that are out there. \n\n
So we are looking to develop this game further. if anybody would want to contribute to our game with nutritional expertise or if you are looking to fund a project please contact me.\n\n
So at this point I can take a couple of questions if anyone has any.\n
