Simple sentences. Subject and Verb. Example: I run. Mary takes dance. Mark does yoga. We like exercise.  What is the tone of this passage?
Compound Sentence Subject. Verb. Conjunction. Subject. Verb Example: I run and Mary takes dance. Mark does yoga and  we like exercise.  What is the tone of this passage?
Complex Sentence Dependent Clause. Subject. Verb. Because I like exercise, I run.  Because she likes exercise, Mary dances.  Because he likes exercise, Mark does yoga.  What do complex sentences help us convey?
Compound-Complex Sentence Dependent clause. Subject. Verb. Conjunction. Subject. Verb. Because we like exercise, I run, Mary takes and  Mark does yoga. ,[object Object],help us convey?
Coordination and Subordination Coordinating conjunctions convey equal emphasis. Example. Dance is popular and music is more popular. Subordinating conjunctions help writers prioritize their points, Example: While dance is popular, music is more popular.
In class exercise. Review your writing. Note the typical sentence patterns that you use. Experiment with a variety of sentence patterns to convey tone and meaning, coordination and subordination. See page 277 for sentence types and pages 238-239  for more on coordination and subordination.
