3. Statistics for Traumatic Brain
Injuries
Traumatic brain injuries cause a significant number of
deaths and disabilities in the United States. Instigated
by a jolt, blow, bump, or penetrating injury to the head,
traumatic brain injuries contribute to approximately 30
percent of all deaths from injuries each year; in
addition, this type of injury results in the manifestation
of a variety of cognitive, physical, and behavioral
disorders that range from mild to severely debilitating.
This category of injury carries direct and indirect annual
costs of more than $60 billion.
4. Statistics for Traumatic Brain
Injuries
While many TBIs are associated with falls and motor
vehicle accidents, studies indicate an increased number
of these injuries occur as a result of sports injuries.
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons
reports that traumatic brain injuries are the leading
cause of sports-related deaths. In fact, 21 percent of
TBIs in adolescents and children stem from sports
activity despite increased safety measures in sports such
as football, cycling, softball, and baseball.
