1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN TASKS AND
ANCILLARY TASKS
2. ‘SILVERMAN’
• The protagonist (or Detective Silverman), features
heavily in both the poster and the magazine cover,
as well as the trailer. There is no subtlety in terms of
how the main character is introduced, I wanted to
make it transparent that the Detective is the main
character and that the film is very much based
around him and the solving of a murder
3. • However my ancillary tasks are more blunt in their
suggestion of a main character. The text on both
the front cover and the poster both anchor the
image, and the central image of both ancillary
tasks is the main character 'Silverman', which also
happens to be the name of the film.
4. • The prominence of the name ‘Silverman’ in the
ancillary tasks creates familiarity with the main
character and will be associated with the film. The
revealing of the protagonist in the trailer is more of a
gradual process, and there is more of a suspense in
the build up. Silverman is revealed further into the
trailer, after the murder is shown.
5. AFFECT ON THE AUDIENCE
• The trailer obviously has more of an opportunity to
reveal more of the film compared the magazine cover
and the poster, so my poster and magazine front cover
have to be able to establish generic conventions of the
genre to present it clearly, which is why my main model
bares typical attire like a suit, and there is the use of a
gun as the main character points the gun at the
camera. Not only does the latter conform to the Noir
genre, it also makes the audience feel more involved,
perhaps more so than the trailer, as the gun is pointing
at them .
6. Trailer
• I believe that the trailer is very effective in its purpose
of attracting the attention of the audience. Of
course the methods of luring the audience differs
from the ancillary tasks. The process is more gradual,
creating suspense and evoking curiosity more than
the magazine cover and the poster. The trailer does
disclose some of the plot as well as revealing the
protagonist in its time frame. In this sense it is more
effective than the poster and the magazine front
cover.
7. MAGAZINE COVER AND POSTER
• The poster and magazine cover had to grasp the
audience's attention more directly and abruptly
than the trailer. Only a large image and minimal
amount of text could be used by the magazine
front cover and the poster to attract some sort of
audience.
8. HOW AUDIENCE FEEDBACK PLAYED A
PART IN THE EFFECTIVENESS
• The audience feedback that I conducted played a part
in on how I set out my trailer and ancillary tasks. This of
course determined how effective the products were, as
my audience's reaction and comments were a tell-tale
sign of what significance my trailer, magazine front
cover and poster had, as well as a survey prior the
production of both, which gave me insight into what
things would appeal to and attract the audience. The
aforementioned survey allowed me to base aspects of
my trailer on what my audience wanted, and thus
making it effective to them. The focus groups and
teacher comments after initial production of the
ancillary tasks trailer gave me ideas of how to enhance
qualities in my trailer, magazine cover and poster to
make it more effective.
9. NARRATIVE THEORY
• Like in Todorov's theory, Silverman is the catalyst for
the solution to the apparent problem in the trailer,
as the intertitles before the revelation of Silverman
suggest this . This perhaps in a more clandestine
manner than the ancillary tasks, by not forcing the
main character and his significance in the film onto
the audience. The importance however is shown in
both ancillary and finished trailer, although it is not
suggested in the trailer straight away.
