- Let’s focus back on the United States4.2 billion people have a toothbrush, but 5.1 billion people have a mobile phone subscription (American Association of Cosmetic Dentistry Blog, 2011). So wow! More mobile phone subscriptions than toothbrushesAccording to a report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, Nearly half (46%) of American adults are smartphone owners as of February 2012, an increase of 11 percentage points over the 35% of Americans who owned a smartphone in May 2011 Update data hereBy 2015, 80% of people accessing the Internet will be doing so from mobile devices (Horizon Report, 2011)[Click to next slide]
- Interestingly 44% of blacks and Latinos are smartphone users (Pew Internet Report, July 2011). This is specifically important for us. - Academia has embraced and started to embrace even more mobile technologiesThere are iPad tours for incoming fresh men, many schools have mobile website and apps, you can for example check class schedule, see what computer is available in the lab, view your course contents, see bus schedules etcIt also read one school let you apply via an app to law schooland if a college or university wants to be were today students are they really need to have as many service mobile ready [move to next slide]

- Let’s quickly look at our mobile website – automatically re-directed to the site on mobile phone, on Nexus but not on iPad.Mobile catalog was just released (yesterday, so I will include it into the website soon)
- We have QR code – quick response code in the stacks, the goal is to help students that are lost in the stacks or need more information in specific area to be connected to the related research guide. So if I am in the education section I can scan a qr code and it will connect me to the education research guide
- Since the summer we have a mobile library tour. So students can use their mobile devices, scan a QR code and learn in short videos about the library – let’s look at one quickly….
- 24 iPads iPads: 14 ipads2 will be 1 day in house loans. 14 iPads can be reserved for information literacy teaching (on day advance notification needed). Circulating iPads: 10 of the 24 iPads 2s will be 2 day outside loans Student have to fill out loan agreement, do surveyWill get iPad mini’s too
- Mobile Information LiteracyLooked at current literature – not so much, there was a recent article – in educause about mobile literacy, but as I said before this is a bigger conceptso we came up with our very own definition.
- Simply said, I want my students to know that they can search certain databases on the phone, that some apps give reliable, authoritative information – become a smart searcher – make sure that the phone is more than just a toy to text/play onSo we decided to not only talk about it but [next slide]
