Michael Saylor mobile quote new book called Mobile WaveA mobile wave is coming a – a mobile revolutionHow many of you have a smartphone? What kind? [Wait for audience response]What are you doing with it? [Wait for audience response]. It comes in handy in many situations for example:Lookup/find (urgent info, local) (phone numbers, etc, doctors, restautrantsetcExplore/play (bored, local) (GPS to explore neighborhood ) and of course to play – Angry Birds etcCheck In/status (repeat/micro-tasking) - check into Facebook, use TwitterEdit/create (urgent change/micro-tasking) send emails, edit files on your phone that you might have saved in the dropbox…
Explain both part of statistics [use pointer]Mobile operating system http://mobithinking.com/mobile-marketing-tools/latest-mobile-stats/bSymbian is Nokia, will probably not survive on Nokia devices, since Nokia will run Windows Phone. Symbian also has an operating system specifically designed for the Japanese marketiOS – iPhone/Ipod Touch/iPadAndroid – there are over 200 different Android Device. As compared to Apples iOS, Android is also an open smartphone platform Now that we have talk about some figures let’s talk about some global mobile device facts:I just recently read a report called Report called “Mobile Africa” and it has a lot of great information in int. I recommend reading it. Facebook now receives 100,000 new Senegalese users each month, Twitter recently played a massive part in Egypt’s revolution and the number of YouTube video plays in sub-Saharan Africa is doubling each year. But less than 10 percent of sub-Saharan Africa enjoys Internet access, hence the growing importance of mobile Internet. In China the insurance business is growing rapidly. The insurers' IT departments are evaluating and developing mobile solutions for field sales agents to effectively improve their efficiency – Jennifer Shanghai exchangeIn Estonia (a small country at the Baltic sea, and by the way one of the most Internet wired countries) a theater has developed Android and iPhone apps. So you can easily buy your ticket on the goAs much as I would like to talk about more mobile usage in the world let’s now travel back to the United States [next slide]http://mobithinking.com/mobile-marketing-tools/latest-mobile-stats/b
Let’s focus back on the United States4.2 billion people have a toothbrush, but 5.1 billion people have a mobile phone subscription (American Association of Cosmetic Dentistry Blog, 2011). So wow! More mobile phone subscriptions than toothbrushesAccording to a report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, Nearly half (46%) of American adults are smartphone owners as of February 2012, an increase of 11 percentage points over the 35% of Americans who owned a smartphone in May 2011 Update data hereBy 2015, 80% of people accessing the Internet will be doing so from mobile devices (Horizon Report, 2011)[Click to next slide]
Interestingly 44% of blacks and Latinos are smartphone users (Pew Internet Report, July 2011). This is specifically important for us. We are working at an urban public university.Use pointer to talk about facts – let’s see if can update slideSo now you have heard about a lot of facts and figures, but you might wonder – what does this have to do with academia? [Move to next slide – academia]
Academia has embraced and started to embrace even more mobile technologiesThere are iPad tours for incoming fresh men, many schools have mobile website and apps, you can for example check class schedule, see what computer is available in the lab, view your course contents, see bus schedules etcIt also read one school let you apply via an app to law schooland if a college or university wants to be were today students are they really need to have as many service mobile ready [move to next slide]
Use pointerRecent study about College students and technology – data was collected in 2010Talk about undergraduates, community college, graduate students
How about libraries and librarians?Well most librarian are very service oriented and the service the library offers, add examples what other libraries have been doing etc: Mobile Website, Text a librarian, QR codes, roving reference and so on and on
Picture of our library – busy academic library, semester just startedNearly all students have smartphones and more are coming in with iPads tooRecording in class by student…
Let’s quickly look at our mobile website – automatically re-directed to the site on mobile phone, on Nexus but not on iPad.Mobile catalog was just released (yesterday, so I will include it into the website soon)
We have QR code – quick response code in the stacks, the goal is to help students that are lost in the stacks or need more information in specific area to be connected to the related research guide. So if I am in the education section I can scan a qr code and it will connect me to the education research guide
Since the summer we have a mobile library tour. So students can use their mobile devices, scan a QR code and learn in short videos about the library – let’s look at one quickly….
24 iPads iPads: 14 ipads2 will be 1 day in house loans. 14 iPads can be reserved for information literacy teaching (on day advance notification needed). Circulating iPads: 10 of the 24 iPads 2s will be 2 day outside loans Student have to fill out loan agreement, do surveyWill get iPad mini’s too
Mobile Information LiteracyLooked at current literature – not so much, there was a recent article – in educause about mobile literacy, but as I said before this is a bigger conceptso we came up with our very own definition.
Simply said, I want my students to know that they can search certain databases on the phone, that some apps give reliable, authoritative information – become a smart searcher – make sure that the phone is more than just a toy to text/play onSo we decided to not only talk about it but [next slide]
Go – future plans here
Vision for libraries, and librarianFuture of teaching – m-learningetc
Where should we include this app?How about staying inthe know – should all librarians do that?Do you think we already have a mobile division?
