Sina
breaks
into
Social
TV
and
Personal
Broadcas<ng
(headline)
Kandian is a new social TV service from Sina. Essentially, it’s a multimedia viewing and sharing
service linked closely to Sina’s own Weibo platform. Users can upload or live-stream – in a manner
similar to the Americam site, Justin.tv – and then share and discuss the content with friends. In
addition to user-generated content, there are some proper TV channels on the site that can be
streamed for free. The site is still in private beta.

Facebook
overtaking
Cyworld
Korea?
A recent report in The Korea Times is indicating that Facebook has overtaken the nation’s dominant
social network Cyworld in terms of monthly visitors, citing metrics from Rankey.com. According to
these, Cyworld saw 15.9 million visitors in August. Facebook saw 16.3 million visitors and is
reported to have grown 16 times on the previous year to 16.3 million visitors last month. But user
base figures indicate that Facebook still has a long way to go. In comparison with Cyworld’s 25
million users, Facebook only has about 4 million to date (according to Social Bakers).

Google
Android
market
blocked
in
China
The Android Market is currently blocked in China, presumably by the Great Firewall. It may be
temporary (there have been earlier blocks), but testing it with different devices always resulted in the
same error message: connection expired. Blocks in China always come without any official public
notification. When Google Maps updated to 4.70 for Android it was blocked too. The last time I
checked Gmail on my phone, that was blocked too. Google faces a severe deficit of trust with the
Chinese government.
