Saint Anthony of Padua was a Franciscan friar born in 1195 AD in Portugal. He joined the Augustinian order at age 15 and later became a Franciscan preacher, revealing a gift for speaking. As he grew older, Anthony lived quietly in Padua attending mass daily and preaching on Sundays. He is known for preaching at a ceremony when the scheduled priest fell ill and for meeting Saint Francis of Assisi. Saint Anthony died of an illness on June 13, 1231 in Padua, with citizens mourning the loss of their beloved saint.
