1. You Are the Author: Creating Chapter Titles
Name: Isabel Gil Dominguez 8-73
When an author creates chapter divisions, they must make several choices. Sometimes they
choose to simply number the chapters. This might be because they want readers to think for
themselves. Other times they use chapter titles to set the scene, create curiosity or foreshadow
upcoming events.
In this activity, you will take on the role of the author and create a title for each of the 15
chapters in Iqbal. Your titles should be what you think Fatima would have chosen as an
appropriate title to reflect and represent her experiences. Then you need to make 2-3 point form
notes which explain the events which made you think of this title.
Chapter Title Point Form Notes
1 • Fatima describes where she lives and why she is
at the Carpet factory.
The Master • Describes the daily work conditions.
• Describes who she works with the “numskulls”.
2 • Iqbal arrived.
Mr. Know It All • Iqbal was chained to his loom.
• Iqbal knew what was going on in the factory.
3 • Iqbal told the children why he has to work in
the Carpet factory.
The Shadow as Maria • Maria was introduced and the other children but
not the numskulls.
• Karim was the one who supervise them.
4 • Iqbal told the children that the master won’t
cancel the debt.
The Blue Bukhara • Iqbal made one of the hardest carpets- Blue
Bukhara.
• Iqbal always reflect to his family every night.
5 • Foreign buyers arrived at the Carpet factory.

Into the Hunted Tomb Iqbal destroys the carpet by cutting it in the
middle.
• Iqbal was dragged into the Tomb.
6 • Iqbal was now in the Tomb.

Am I There Yet? The children decided to send Iqbal some food
and water.
• The children went back every night.
7 • Iqbal was released from the Tomb 3 days later.

The Future The children made up a rule that never talk
about the future.
• Iqbal decided to escape to get help.
2. 8 • Maria made a kite on her carpet.

The Free Kite The master got mad and planned to send Maria
into the Tomb.
• The children told that they would go to if Maria
was send.
9 • Iqbal told the other children what happened
when he escaped.
To The Outside World • Iqbal saw a man protesting about child labour.
• Maria spoke.
10 • Maria taught the children how to read and
write.
The Spring Breeze • They made a play on the factory.
• Iqbal escaped again.
11 • Iqbal went in the Carpet factory with the man
from BLLF.
Freedom. At last! • The children were taken to the head quarters.
• Iqbal, Fatima and Maria= fly a kite.
12 • Iqbal decided that him, Maria and Fatima will
stay and help Eshan Khan.
I’ll stay here, Father • Iqbal went to different Carpet Factory caused
by child labour and freed them.
• The “they” attacked them (warning).
13 • Iqbal and Eshan Khan went to one of those
illegal brick factories.
I was scared • They met a family who had been working.
• The munshi forced them to leave, Iqbal was
scared.
14 • They’ll be leaving to Sweden and Boston to
speak and fight child labour.
The Biggest Kite • University in Boston gave/ offered a scholarship
to Iqbal.
• Fatima will be going home.
15 • Iqbal went home to his village on Easter.

Our Story He was killed by the man inside the big black

Easter, Sunday Iqbal Masih was murdered on Easter Sunday,
1995 and was killed by Carpet Mafia.
• 13 years old, 30 kilometres from Lahore,
Pakistan.
