2. She stepped out of the car, looking up at the 16 story hospital the was going to be her home for the next 4 years. Nervous and not knowing what to expect she forced herself through the front door. Inside the hospital she was socked to find technology in every corner, doctors on laptops that were also mobiles, secretaries working on computer screens as big as TV’s. People working on touch sensitive computers everywhere. And screens implanted into the wall for anyone to use. But there was one thing that shocked her the most…….
3. … ..the OR! The wall plastered with computer screens, giant machines taller that she was, and large pieces of equipment hanging form the ceiling. She was lost, it felt like she was in a video game. Thankfully another doctor stepped into the OR, before she did something out of temptation that she would later regret.
4. Hello I’m Dr. Teslo. You must be Evie. Welcome to St. Marks. I’m going to be your resident! Well I see you had no trouble finding the OR’s did you? I have a felling we are going to have a hard time keeping you out of these rooms.
5. You look a little confused about the OR! I am very confused! I feel like I’m inside a computer! Well let me give you a tour around the hospital and clarify some facts
6. Our hospital has been very fortunate to be selected as one of the very few medical care facilities to test out the new virtual reality equipment. Virtual reality? Yes as you can see this is the most advanced in surgical technology, I am sure they never trained you on any equipment like this in med school
7. These machines you see hanging from the ceiling, they are used to scan a patients body, as well as all their internal organs and their disease. WOW!
8. This allows the surgeons to simulate the surgery to precisely how the patients body would react if the doctors made certain decisions.
9. This technology is 85% accurate, and it also allows our doctors to “rehears” the surgery before they operate.
10. However our virtual reality technology isn’t only used for surgery, it can also be used by patients before and after surgery or recovery. Really!! How so?
11. Well before the surgery it can show patients who want to know how the procedure will be done, and what their risk factors are.
12. And for the patients recovering or coming here for medical treatment that requires bad rest they may use the virtual reality technology to travel, or play games, or even play sports.
13. Follow me and I will show you. In this room is one of you virtual reality addicts! Tommy, a 10 year old boy suffering from leukemia! But boy does he have a lot of energy!!
14. Die you alien scum!!! Tom you know your not suppose to be running around and jumping on your bed!!! What??? I can’t hear you!!
15. Tommy is wearing the headset that we give to all our patients, it’s like a 3D world inside a helmet that also comes with head sets. That’s why he can’t hear me!! Tommy turn the volume down and get back in bed!! Yes ma’am!
16. CAT scans and X-rays just became a lot easier. When patients are admitted to the hospital they are given a full body scan
17. This scan documents every part of their body. Tissue, bone, skin, everything!!! And it only takes an hour!!! That makes our lives so much easier!! So that is there IS something severely wrong with them we can simulate treatment options and find the best one.
18. Now that we are done with the tour, do you have any questions? Umm… Yea…… where is the bathroom??
