Red deer live in deciduous and mixed forests across Europe, except the northern regions. They eat various plants, leaves, bark, and fruits. Large populations can damage trees by gnawing bark. Red deer stand around 150cm tall and weigh up to 250kg, with males having large antlers. During the rutting season from mid-September to mid-October, males roar to attract females and compete with other males. Females give birth to spotted fawns that remain so for 2-3 months and are nursed. Red deer live in herds after the rut and can communicate and travel long distances at night to feed over large areas.
