3. Barack Obama’s Childhood
Barack Obama was born in August 4, 1961 in Hawaii. His parents were Barack
Obama Sr. from Kenya and Ann Dunham from Kansas.
Obama Sr. and Dunham divorced when Barack was 2 years old. His mother later
remarried and his half sister, Maya Soetoro Ng was born.
At the age of 10, Barack was sent to Hawaii to live with his maternal
grandparents.
Barack Obama only saw his father once after his parent’s divorce. His father died
in a car accident in 1982.

4. Barack Obama’s Education
Obama graduated from with honors from Punahou Academy in 1979.
After high school, he went to Occidental College in Los Angeles for 2
years. He transferred to Columbia University in New York and
graduated in 1983 with a political science degree.
Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1991.
He began to work as a civil rights lawyer and a professor at the
University of Chicago Law School.
5. Obama’s Personal Life
Barack Obama met Michele Obama in 1989. She was Obama’s advisor during
an internship at the firm she was working form. They began dating.
In 1996 Michele and Barack married and resides in South Chicago.
They have 2 girls, Malia and Sasha.
Obama has also written Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and
Inheritance and The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American
Dream.

Obama helped organize voters for Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential election.
Obama won the election for Illinois State Senate in 1996.
In 2000 Obama was unsuccessful in gaining the House of Representatives seat
held by Bobby Rush.
Obama started to plan and raise money to run in the 2004 US Senate.
7. Obama and Politics-Cont.
“I am not opposed to all wars. I am opposed to dumb wars.” Barack Obama
After September 11th, Obama (who was still a state senator) was opposed to the
war with Iraq. The war still began in 2003.
Obama was the keynote speaker at the 2004 Democratic Convention
supporting John Kerry. This is where many people took notice of the future
president.
Obama won the US Senate seat in 2004 with the largest electoral vote in Illinois
history.
In 2007, Obama announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic
presidential nomination.
8. Obama is elected President
On November 4, 2008 Barack Obama was the first African American elected as
the President of the United States of America. The Vice President is Joe Biden.
This was a day that will down in history. Over 125,000 people jammed Grant Park
in Chicago to hear Obama address the nation as the newly elected president.

9. Obama’s 1st year in office
President Obama was sworn into office on January 20, 2008.
When Obama took office, the country was in financial turmoil. He signed for a
$787 billion stimulus.
He has been trying to remodel America’s global role. President Obama also
received the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10 2009.
He proposed the 2010 budget which included $17 billion of cuts.
On December 24, 2009, the Senate passes Obama’s health care bill to extend
health insurance to 30 million more Americans.
