1. Lets save our EARTH
“We Do Not Inherit the Earth from Our Ancestors; We Borrow
It from Our Children” sang as tribute to protect earth from
pollution and depletion of natural resources. If this selfishness
of human did not change then we certainly consume future of
our next generation. Current rise in the price of crude oil shows
the consumption rate of our natural resources. Price of crude

2. oil goes over 100 USD per barrel for the first time in the history
of crude oil. If this is not checked at this time then crude oil will
completely exhaust within 35 year and our future generation
have to pay for it.
Sustainable development means
“Development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generation to meet their
own needs”
Pollution and depletion of natural resources are two major
factors against the sustainable development on earth. Pollution
in all form air, water and land is increasing day by day. It rises
many environment problems like global warming, disturbing
the ecosystem, acid rain, climatic change, incurable
disease etc. which has huge impact on environment and human
health. In the beginning of the 21st century the population
of the Earth reached 6 billion, and is expected to level out
between 10 and 11 billion over the next 50 years which will
ultimately put the pressure on natural resources.
We need to resolve these issues by individual efforts,
volunteering and legislative actions.
First steps towards sustainable development are individual
efforts. Few ways by which individuals can protect environment
are :

3. ● Recycling and reusing of waste products
E.g. recycling of water, paper, bottles, glass etc.
● Effectively and wisely use of electricity
E.g. switch off appliances when not in use, replacing
inefficient appliances etc.
● Using vehicle efficiently can save the energy
E.g. turn off vehicle when not in use, carpooling etc.
● Planting a tree
● Using nonrenewable sources of energy such as solar
energy, wind energy, geothermal energy etc.
● Using bicycle for short journey etc.
● Use of public transport in spite of private vehicle.
Volunteering is the next steps towards the sustainable
development. Community service program are major factor
responsible in local improvement. By giving environment
education and launching various environment awareness
programs among the teenagers.
In this industrialized world, children suffers from various
health hazardous diseases like asthma, lead poisoning, cancer

4. and certain neurological problems etc. children’s are mostly
affected than adult because they breathe twice as much air and
drink two to seven times as much water relative to their body
weight than adult.
So as to protect children living in polluted region, several
environment awareness programs should launch and student
should actively participate in them. Younger generation is
effective media to bring the enormous change in attitude of
society. Environment education to children is the right step
towards the sustainable development. Through environment
education we should focus on the strategies for reducing
consumption of energy and materials, and greater use of
renewable resources should be incorporated in design and
construction. More funds can be allotted for environmental
related projects and students may be motivated by giving
awards and prizes for best social impact environmental
projects. The interest among the students may also be
enhanced by conducting essay writing competitions.
Government agencies can act as catalyst for change regarding
the pollution and resource depletion. Main problem with
environment pollution policies is corrupted officers, leaders
etc., careless behavior of common people though Government
spends thousands of crore rupees towards environment
protection .Through by simple practices including recycle,

5. reuse, reduce we can make huge change towards environment.
Government should launch more environment policies and
should follow them strictly.
Role of science and technology in delivering environmental
sustainability:
International scientific community belief that sustainability can
be achieved only with application of technology and science,
but progress towards sustainable development depends on
attitude of society.
Main contribution of technology and science toward the
environment protection has been in two areas
● Alerting us toward environment pollution
It is through science that we came to know about the depletion
of ozone layer through CFC emissions and international society
has taken the action such as Montreal protocol to change
our life style in such a way that can reduce environment
degradation.
● Science and technology offers solution towards the small
scale environment pollution such as treating the waste
water, use of alternative source of energy etc.

6. Technology should be reached at par level so as to effectively
use non-conventional source of energy such as solar energy,
wind energy, geothermal energy, tidal energy etc. The system
should be made in such a way so as to use this sources of
energies economically and achievable for the mass.
Thus science and technology can help in sustainable
development in limited ways and they concerned with treating
the effluent not for the cause.
Science and Technology cannot help in bringing about the
change of attitude. Hence education in moral and ethical
philosophy is needed. Environmental study should be made
a mandatory part. But we cannot neglect technology and
science in this aspect so scientific and technology capability
should strengthen by conducting several researches on heath,
pollution and environment etc.
Thus for the sustainable development effective policies should
be implement to reduce the consumption of natural resources
and towards the environment pollution. We need moral
environment education and also required to respecting its
values.
It is of critical importance that we should stand together and
take responsibility towards sustainable development in the
