This document summarizes a lecture on economics and exchange from an anthropological perspective. It discusses how exchange among foraging societies is used to create and maintain social relationships rather than just meet basic needs. Several examples of non-Western exchange systems are provided, including Hxaro exchange, Potlatch, and the Kula ring, which involve delayed or nonequivalent exchanges that perpetuate social relationships over time. Modern economies are also cultural systems influenced by beliefs and social norms rather than just rational laws of supply and demand.
