The USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on July 30, 1945 in the Philippine Sea. Of the 1,196 crew members on board, around 300 went down with the ship while it sank in 12 minutes. The remaining 900 men were left stranded in shark-infested waters, and by the time they were discovered after 5 days only 300 had survived. Captain Charles McVay was later court-martialed for failing to zigzag, though the ship had been traveling alone in the waters without escort. The sinking was overshadowed by news of the Japanese surrender and took two weeks for the public announcement.
