1. Genre
o Forms & Conventions – What are the conventions of a thriller film? Summary of your
group’s research findings (1-2 pages).
o Similar Text Analysis – Comprehensive textual analysis (essay format) of 2 thriller film
opening sequences (approx 2-3 mins) per group member (500-600 words approx each)
2. Target Audience
o Questionnaries – 10 questionnaires per group member, making good use of “closed
questions” (for quantitative analysis) regarding genre expectations / likes / dislikes etc (1-2
pages each).
o Interviews – 2 in-depth interviews per group member (1-2 pages of transcription each),
making good use of “open questions” (for qualitative analysis).
o Analysis – Bar charts to ascertain quantitative percentages (small charts, please) (2
pages).
o Conclusion – Conclusions drawn from your questionnaire and interview findings (1-2
pages) confirming the profile of your particular target audience; their genre preferences /
expectations; and how you could attract them by addressing such issues in your film.
3. Subject matter & Representation issues
o Subject matter – Background information on the subject matter that your video will be
dealing with, to make your scripting and settings etc more authentic (1-2 pages).
o Representation issues – In relation to your script ideas, how will you be representing
particular social groups, and why? Refer to the issues of representation covered in the TV
Drama analysis unit.

o Professional job roles (Producer / Director / Prod’s Ass / Cameraperson / Editor) (1-2
pages).
o Distribution - Research into possible distribution outlets for your film. Here you will need to
research what kind of film studio/company would distribute your film, & why? (1-2 pages).
o BBFC Guidelines – Summary of the BBFC ratings system and how this will influence your
production (1 page). Check website www.bbfc.co.uk & www.sbbfc.co.uk

5. Individual Final Evaluation
In the evaluation the following questions must be answered:
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of existing thriller film openings?
2. How does your film opening represent particular social groups?
3. What kind of media institution might distribute your film and why?
4. Who would be the audience for your film?
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this
product?
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
