driving innovation in energy from waste
Workshop Leaders:
Dr Stuart Wagland, Dr Raffaella Villa & Dr Kumar
Patchigolla, Cranfield University
Overview of workshop:
The workshop will discuss how the composition and the
properties of our wastes in the UK can vary, and how this can be
monitored. Cranfield University have been involved in a number
of projects looking at wastes in the UK, and using these in the in-
house gasification, combustion and anaerobic digestion
facilities. This workshop will be an interactive session where the
lessons from recent years will be shared and the development
needs discussed with the participants.
Why you should attend:
TofindoutabouttheworkcarriedoutbyCranfieldUniversityand
to learn about the latest innovative work being undertaken. This
workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to discuss
the key areas where developments are required in the UK.

About the workshop hosts
Dr Stuart Wagland is a Lecturer in Renewable
Energy from Waste in the Department of
Environmental Science and Technology at
Cranfield University. He has interests in the
properties of solid waste materials, such as the
composition, recovery of resources and the
energy potential of UK waste streams. He is the Course Director
oftheMScRenewableEnergyTechnologycourse,andisdirectly
involved with the management of various taught modules and
delivering lectures across a number of MSc courses, along with
the supervision of research students across a range of industry-
relevanttopics. Stuarthasinterestsinthepropertiesofsolidwaste
materials, which range from household waste to commercial
and industrial wastes, and has significant expertise in the
properties and characterisation of waste materials.
Dr Raffaella Villa is an applied microbiologist with
particular expertise in microbial and enzymatic
processes, which she has adapted to the waste
and environmental sectors. Her research interests
cover waste/by-products biotransformation,
applied biocatalysis and bioenergy from waste,
with a particular interest in anaerobic digestion (AD). She is the
Principal Investigator (PI) on three long-term PhD projects on AD,
she been actively involved in three WRAP funded projects,
supporting the AD Quality Protocol PAS 110 and she was
appointment as the national AD technical support for WRAP in

publication. She currently leads a group of 4 PhD students and
coordinates the virtual Centre for Anaerobic Science, which
includes a pilot Anaerobic Digestion facility under construction
on campus.
Dr Kumar Patchigolla is a Lecturer in Carbon
Capture and Storage. His research interests are in
advanced carbon capture and storage
technologies and thermo-chemical energy
conversion for power applications. Dr Patchigolla
is responsible for a wide range of energy process
facilities, including pilot scale plants for gasification and carbon
capture,aswellashighpressureflowloopCO2transportsystems.
About the organisation
Cranfield is world-leading in its
contribution to global innovation.
Withouremphasisontheaerospace,
automotive,defenceandsecurity,energy,health,environment,
management and manufacturing sectors, we have changed
the way society thinks works and learns. Our energy and
environment research has resulted in a number of very high
profile projects where we have undertaken extensive work into
high efficiency energy from waste solutions, using either thermal
technologies or bio-chemical processes.
