1. Citing Sources in Word 2007
Citing sources in documents is an extremely important part of writing documents. If you use a
quote or information that you learned or received from a source other than yourself, you should
be citing your sources to avoid allegations of plagiarism. MS Word 2007 includes some really
easy to use citation tools.
1. Creating/Adding Sources
a. Sources are the things that you want to credit/cite in your document (books, journals,
magazines, websites….)
b. On the References Ribbon, click the Manage Sources icon
c.
On the Source Manager window, hit New to add a new sourceEnter all pertinent
information about your source (notice the drop down box at the top for the type of
source) and click OKOn the Source Manager window, you will then see all sources in
the Current List section (right side). Previously added sources are on the Master List
(left side) that you can add to this document list of sources.
Close the Source ManagerThen you can add citations to your sources within your
document.
Insert FootNote/EndNote
2. a. Wherever in your document that you want to cite a source insert a footnote or endnote
b. References Ribbon, click the Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote button
c. Since you have pre-entered your source in the Source Manager, all you have to do is
click the Insert Citation button on the References Ribbon and select which source you
want to cite.
Insert Bibliography
a. A bibliography is typically at the end of the document and lists all of the sources you
cited in your document and includes all necessary information needed to identify your
sources.
b. Go to the end of your document

Go to the References Ribbon and click the Insert Bibliography arrow. Notice you have
3 choices on the Bibliography down arrow:
i. Bibliography:
1. Bibliography will insert a pre-built bibliography with the word
“bibliography” at the top
2. All information in this bibliography is dynamic based on information that
you entered in the Manage Sources window. If you update a source, you
can then click on the Update button on the bibliography itself and it will
automatically be updated in your document!
ii. Works Cited
1. Works Cited will insert a pre-built bibliography with the word “Works
Cited” at the top
2. All information in this bibliography is dynamic based on information that
you entered in the Manage Sources window. If you update a source, you
can then click on the Update button on the bibliography
3. itself and it will automatically be updated in your document!
Insert Bibliography [as static text]
1. This will insert a bibliography that you can adjust yourself without
changing any details in the Manage Sources window
