Chapter 11 section 1

Solid:
    Fixed shape. Fixed volume.
    Typically forms crystals.

Liquid:
    No fixed shape. Fixed volume.
Viscosity-describes a liquids ability to flow.
High viscosity = a thick liquid that flows slowly.
Low viscosity = a thin liquid that flows quickly.
Surface Tension-the tendency of liquids to decrease
surface area to the smallest size possible.
Cohesion-Liquid particles attraction for each other.
Adhesion-Liquids attraction for particles of a solid surface.
Capillary Action-The process of moving a liquid due to the
    cohesion of liquid molecules.

Gas:
No fixed shape. No fixed volume.
A gas will expand until it is evenly distributed throughout
    its container.

Changes of State:
Matter can move between the three states. When
describing this movement it is necessary to consider energy
   and temperature.
Outside Arrows (green) = A loss of energy decreases
temperature and slows particle movement.

Inside Arrows (blue) = An increase of energy increases
temperature and speeds up particle movement.
Get the point?

Boiling Point: Temperature and pressure where liquid and gas
are at equilibrium. Liquid to gas.

Melting Point: Temperature and pressure where a solid liquid.

Freezing Point: Temperature and pressure where a liquid
solid.

The melting point and freezing point of water is the same
temperature.
If the water is solid it will melt at 0oC.
If the water is liquid it will freeze at 0oC.
