1. National Institutes of Health
The agency's research hospital in Bethesda,
Maryland is accepting no new patients.
US Trade Representative
Federal Workers Laid Off
As many as 1 million US federal employees
are now on furlough without pay.
The USTR office has already been squeezed by
the sequester and has cut back travel to the 41
countries where there are concerns
about intellectual property violations.

National Park Closings
More than 750,000 visitors per day are now
unable to visit national parks. That's a loss of
$30,000,000 per day in revenue to gateway
communities.
Environmental Protection
The EPA is effectively shut down with only a core
group of individuals available in case of a "significant
emergency" according to administrator Gina McCarthy.

Defense Department
Civilian employees are being furloughed.
According to Standard & Poor's, big defense
contractors will not be affected but smaller
contractors will be, should the shutdown
extend longer than two weeks.

White House, Senate & Congress
The president and all 535 members of the United States
congress remain employed at the US taxpayers' expense.
They are receiving full salaries and benefits (including
government- paid health care). All former presidents and
congress members are also receiving their
full taxpayer-funded pension benefits.
