SLVLearn 2012
The future of information
10 October 2012
2. Session outline
• Search
• Using the SLV catalogue
• ergo website
• Research guides
• Collection items up close
P–2
3. Search
• When someone asks us to
search for something, what do
we do?
• Let me Google that for you
• Why do we search the way we
do?
• How can we best explain this
process to students, to teach
them effective search
strategies?
P–3
4. Using the SLV catalogue
• Why not just use Google?
• Different search outlets
for different purposes
• What if we wanted to find
a map of Melbourne from
1839?
P–4
5. Using the SLV catalogue
Doing a catalogue search
http://search.slv.vic.gov.au
Different tabs are
to search for
different item types
The search bar is like a search engine on the web. Just
type in what you’re looking for and click ‘Search’
P–5
6. Using the SLV catalogue
Once you have searched for a
subject, we recommend that you
restrict your search to online
resources so you can use them
remotely.
You can do this from at the top
of the search results, or under
the ‘Show only’ heading in the
left column
P–6
7. Using the SLV catalogue
You can view the items by
clicking on the ‘View online’
link.
Some are available to download
in high-res tiff format
P–7
8. Using the SLV catalogue
Each item has a catalogue
record that contains all
bibliographic details,
background/description of the
item.
Items are often grouped by
subject – these categories are
hyperlinked to searches for
other items in that subject set,
eg. Melbourne (Vic.) Maps
P–8
9. ergo
ergo website
http://ergo.slv.vic.gov.au
Information on for students
on study skills and
SLV collection items that are
linked to common curriculum
areas at VELS level 5 & 6, and
also VCE
• Learn skills
• Explore history
• For teachers
P–9
10. ergo
The information on ergo helps
to put the items into context. All
sources used in ergo link to the
catalogue record for that item,
eg. A plan of Melbourne Port
Phillip (Melbourne city grid)
P–10
11. ergo
The Research skills section in
ergo helps to explain
important steps in the process,
particularly locating
information and selecting
resources.
‘Search’ and ‘Research’ may
not mean the same thing for
students as it does to us.
P–11
12. Research guides
SLV research guides
http://guides.slv.vic.gov.au/
These help to provide advice on how to
find commonly asked for items in the
SLV collection.
Some are for quite niche audiences, but
some are good for students as they
cover general topics.
P–12
13. Collection items up close
Map: Plan of the town of Melbourne – John Pascoe Fawkner, 1841
P–13
14. Collection items up close

P–15
16. Collection items up close

P–16
17. Collection items up close
• What are the benefits of seeing these items up close?
• How important is it that they are digitised?
• Do students still value the experience of viewing primary sources first-hand?
• Where is the connection, the relevance to their lives?
