with cattle. Trees have been cleared in the

6. Von Senden family . (Negative 188898 ). Von
Senden was born in Holstein, Germany in 1852 and
came to Australia in 1865. The family were pioneers
of the Logan Agricultural Reserve. (Description

7. Amalie Dietrich, 1821 - 1891 .
(Negative 60188 ). Amalie
Dietrich was a German naturalist
who helped introduce Australia's
natural wonders to Europe. She
spent nearly ten years (1863-
1872) in the barely-settled wilds
of northern Queensland,
collecting for the Museum
Godeffroy in Hamburg,

(Negative 10122 ). Students of the German
Community School, South Brisbane, photographed
with their teacher, in the late 1890s. The flags on the
wall in the background appear to be in the colours
black, white and red which were the colours on the
German national flag until 1919 (when they were
replaced by the black, red and gold).

121070 ). German workers hauling sugar cane with a
four-horse team. The cart is heavily loaded with
cane. Railway tracks can be seen in the background.
10. Members of the Deutscher Klub, Brisbane, 1912.
(Negative 20708). Members relax at tables on the
verandah of the Deutscher Klub, 1912. The men
drink beer and play cards, possibly including
cribbage. A small boy stands next to the first table.
The verandah is enclosed with trellises and blinds.
11. Wagon wedding party, West Moreton, 1907. (Negative 36641).
Caption: A German wedding in West Moreton. The wedding party on

12. Members of the Goethebund at Beenleigh, ca. 1934. (Negative
33869). The Goethebund members gather on the lawn of a property
bordered by a picket fence. The Goethebund was a non-political
organisation whose principal objective was to foster German literature,
art, music and culture. It was founded in 1927 and was dissolved in 1939
(Information taken from: A. Corkhill, Queensland and Germany : ethnic,
socio-cultural, political and trade relations 1838-1991, 1992).

The group members from left to right include Henry Moller on the stairs and
the drummer August Rieck. Standing from left to right are Fred Moller, Pastor
Windolf, ?, August Stibbe, August Muller, Henry Muller, Charles Muller and
Jack Rieck. Seated are Harry Stibbe, Ferdinand Kruger, Bill Topp and Joe
Muller.

Queensland, ca. 1871. (Negative 20265). Unidentified German farm
property in the Bethania area near the Logan River. A horse-drawn wagon
appears in the foreground. The family, including children, are posed in
front of the farm building which has a shingled roof.

kangaroo was later
placed in the town
Karlsruhe's zoo in
Germany. It was still
there in 1941.
20. John Nicholas Beit. (Negative 135901).
German immigrant to Sydney who established
John Beit and Sons, a company who
introduced German labourers into New South
Wales. His son William became a partner in
Westbrook Station.
21. Carl Dickfos and wife, married for 60 years,
ca. 1931. (Negative 107666). Mr and Mrs Carl
Dickfos emigrated from Germany in 1860s and
married in 1871. Carl is buried at Colleyville
Cemetery.(Description supplied with

23. Wilhelm Zornig. (Negative 40941). Wilhelm Zornig,
known as Bill, was the first Australian-born son of
Eagleby pioneer farmers Tomm and Abel Zornig. He
was working coastal ships to far north Queensland
until the 1891 Maritime Strike, then joined the
Queensland Railways and became a steam train

24. Arrival at Boonah Railway Station of sailors from
the Karlsruhe (ship), 1934. (Image Number
ba0562). German sailors from Karlsruhe (ship) on a
good-will visit to Australia. The fleet of new motor
vehicles was at hand to take the sailors around the

25. Johannes Christian Brunnich (1861-1933). (Negative 182233).
Immigrating to Australia and arrived in Brisbane early in 1885. He
married Kate Terry in 1886 and became chief chemist and mill
manager for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company at Homebush,
Mackay, and early in 1897 was appointed chemist in the Queensland

34. German Consul's wedding in 1901. (Negative
177767). Herr Von Ploennies, the Queensland
Consul for Germany, married on 9 April 1901.
35. Second German Clubhouse, East Brisbane, ca. 1896.. (Negative 168483). The
second German Clubhouse opened in 1890 and served for 43 years. It housed a
ballroom, bar, library, kitchen and dining room, billiard room and skittle alley
(Information taken from: F. J. Jenner, Die Geschichte des Vereins, geschrieben
anlaesslich seines 75... = The history of the German Club, written on the occasion

William Jolly Bridge in 1932. (Negative 102624).
Bridge on Wednesday 30 March 1932. Fraulein
Beinhorn had just completed a solo flight from Berlin
to Australia. She started her flight in Berlin on 4
December 1931 and arrived at Archerfield
Aerodrome on 29 March 1932. She flew a Klemm 80

(Negative 20517). Friedrich and Anna Luise were married at Dugandan on 20
April 1899. Family and friends of the bride and groom are gathered for this
photograph. The bride and groom sit, with arms linked, in the second row on the
left. Wilhelm Poelitz, the bride's father is in the third row on the left. Children
seated on the left have taken their shoes off and one guest, standing in the back
row, is pouring himself a drink.
