Incarcerated students in most jurisdictions are prohibited from accessing the internet. This discussion will focus around the learnings from a number of projects from the University of Southern Queensland which have been introducing educational technologies into correctional centres for the delivery of USQ programs and courses. These projects include the OLT-funded From Access to Success project and a number of HEPPP-funded projects including the Triple ‘E’ project (eLearning, eReaders and Empowerment), Paper to Pixels and the $4.3 million Making the Connection project. Making the Connection will see the deployment of USQ’s Learning Management System and tablet computers deployed into 13 correctional centres across Australia.

It chronicles all our activities as a team of volunteer interns for Kotak Education Foundation during the aforementioned period. Kotak Education Foundation (KEF), an NGO formed in 2007 by Mr.Uday Kotak ( Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd), Mrs.Pallavi Kotak and Mr.Shivaji Dam (Former Director , Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd) , caters to the education and livelihood needs of the underprivileged section of the society. In the areas of education KEF has partnered with 30 schools catering to underprivileged students. In the schools, the foundation teaches spoken English to students of class 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. The spoken English program is supported by other programs such as Health, Parenting, School Teacher's and Principal Development and Scholarship.

The Challenge & Opportunity method described in this presentation has been used with large mixed groups to moderate perceptions, identify real barriers and benefits, and inform development planning for those taking part in areas of academic innovation. Data from CPD events since 2009 have informed the design of an analytical taxonomy for academic innovation (a Readiness Matrix) which is described in terms of pedagogic, organisational and technical readiness. The paper also introduces the concept of smart learning as a case study for reflecting on the method. Smart learning embraces and multiplies the effect of a set of interrelated concepts including BYOD, mobile learning, social media for learning, open learning, and rich digital media.

Is it conceivable that a course can be designed to reach students with varied learning styles and strengths? This session will explore the practical and concrete applications of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to curriculum and program design. It will also highlight the Scholar Program’s approach to professional development, mentoring, and evaluation in supporting higher education campuses to apply UDL and other strategies. The Scholar Program is part of the Disability & Diversity Project at SDSU – Interwork Institute, which conducts professional development and technical assistance activities for faculty, stafadministrators. The overall focus of the Project is facilitate the capacity of colleges and universities to meet the needs of its diverse student population, including students with disabilities. At the conclusion of the session, participants will have the opportunity to complete a Scholar application to be considered for the 2010-2011 academic year.
