Isn't it captivating to see history reverberate? Throughout my filmmaking career, I have
witnessed the movie industry evolve in myriad ways, adapting to new technologies, cultural
shifts, and consumer demands. Yet, it was the global pandemic that catalysed the resurgence of
a seemingly forgotten gem: the drive-in theatre.
When COVID-19 struck, it cast an unprecedented veil of uncertainty, particularly over traditional
movie theatres. Social distancing measures and safety protocols make it impossible to cram
audiences into confined spaces as we once did. Despite this, as the axiom in show business
goes, the show had to go on.
The Resurgence of Drive-In Theatres
As the curtain fell on conventional cinemas, a beacon of light emerged from the past, the
drive-in theatre. This artefact of the 50s and 60s made a dramatic comeback, providing a
solution that conformed to social distancing guidelines while still fostering a sense of community.
This sense of community was something we, as a society, were desperately yearning for during
the isolation of lockdown. Families could remain in their cars, adequately distanced from others,
and still experience the enchantment of cinema under the stars, a concept that was so simple,
yet so precious during those challenging times.

In a world where streaming services were swiftly gaining traction, the pandemic breathed new
life into drive-in theatres, and what a resurgence it was! From classic drive-ins that dusted off
their screens after decades of dormancy, to innovative pop-up drive-ins in parking lots and open
fields, the public thronged to these open-air cinemas in droves. The craving for shared, outdoor
entertainment was tangible.
The Nostalgic Appeal of Shared Experiences
This resurgence wasn't merely about watching films. It was about recapturing the essence of
shared experiences at a time when we were all physically distant. The drive-in, with its nostalgic
charm and communal spirit, became a symbol of resilience, a testament to our intrinsic human
ability to adapt and find joy amidst adversity.
The Future of Drive-In Theatres
As we gradually returned to normalcy, the future of drive-in theatres was left hanging in the
balance. Would they continue to flourish in a post-pandemic world, or would they recede into
obscurity as the novelty wore off and traditional theatres reopened their doors? The answer
wasn't clear. However, one thing was certain, the pandemic had reminded us of the simple
pleasures a drive-in theatre could offer. It was a nostalgic, timeless experience that had once
again found its place in our hearts.
Regardless of what the future held, the resurgence of the drive-in theatre during those
challenging times was a testament to the enduring appeal of shared cinematic experiences.
