The PPT gives an insight into the concept of "sustainable development” that takes humanity toward a sustainable future that doesn’t deplete our natural resources. Sustainable development describes the holistic, systems-based approach that ensures sustainability. The PPT on Sustainable development shall benefit all as it is a grave concern of all disciplines today.
2. Concept of Sustainable Development
• The term ‘sustainable development’ was used by the Brundtland Commission (1987) which
coined what has become the most often-quoted definition of sustainable development
“development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.
• The United Nations 2005 World Summit Outcome Document refers to the four ‘interdependent
and mutually reinforcing pillars’ of sustainable development as including:
• (संयुक्त राष्ट्र 2005 विश्व विखर सम्मेलन पररणाम दस्तािेज़ में सतत विकास क
े चार 'परस्पर निर्भर और
पारस्पररक रूप से मजबूत स्तंर् ं' को संदवभित वकया गया है):
economic development- आवथिक विकास
social development -सामाविक विकास
environmental protection- पयाििरण संरक्षण
The fourth pillar is indigenous people and culture-मूल वनिासी और संस्क

• "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present,
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.“

• Sustainable development is a pattern of resources use that aims to meet human needs
while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present
but also for generation to come.

The concept of sustainable development is intertwined with the concept of
carrying capacity. The long-term result of environmental degradation is the inability to
sustain human life. Such degradation on a global scale could imply extinction for
humanity.
5. Definitions
• World Commission on Environment and Development (1987), p 43.
Also called the Brundtland Report -Sustainable development is development that meets the
needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs.

• McKeon, R. (2002). -Sustainable development is often thought to have three components:
environment, society, and economy. The well-being of these three areas is intertwined, not
separate.

6. • Makandia & Barbier (1989)-Sustainable development involves devising a social and economic system,
which ensures that these goals are sustained, i.e. that real incomes rise, that educational standards
increase, that the health of the nation improves, that the general quality of life is advanced.

• Pearce (1993):-Sustainable development is concerned with the development of a society where the costs
of development are not transferred to future generations, or at least an attempt is made to compensate
for such costs

9. What is sustainable Community?
Throughout the world, people want the same things
Access to clean air and water
Economic opportunities
Safe and healthy place to raise their kids
Shelter
Lifelong learning
A sense of community
Ability to have a say in the decisions that affect their lives.
10. Characteristics of Sustainable Development
It attempt to minimize green house gases, reduce global warming and preserve
environmental resources.
It emphasizes on green architecture and eco-friendly building practices.
Use of natural, biodegradable building material.
Use of renewable resources of water.
Emphasis on renewable energy sources such as Solar and wind.
Protection of natural habitat.
Planned replacement for any resources used.
Non polluting construction practices and industries.
Sustainable development is said to set limits on the developing world.
Sustainability requires that human activity only use nature’s resources at a rate,
which they can be replenished naturally.

12. The United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the eight goals set by the 189
UN member states in September 2000 and agreed to be achieved by the year 2015. The
Millennium Declaration was signed at the September global summit held at the UN headquarters
in New York and the 149 international leaders in attendance committed to combating disease,
hunger, poverty, illiteracy, discrimination against women and environmental degradation
13. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015
as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and
prosperity. The 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that
development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.

extreme poverty for all
people everywhere by 2030
GOAL 2

Partnership for Goals-The 2030 Agenda is universal and calls for action by all
countries – developed and developing – to ensure no one is left behind
14. Reasons for Environmental Crisis
1- Population explosion
• The high rate of growth of population adversely affects the environment.
• It increases the demand for environmental resources, but their supply is limited.
• This results in overuse and misuse of resources.
(2) Rise in economic activity
• The rise in economic growth results in affluent consumption and production of goods
and services.
• It generates wastes that are beyond the absorptive capacity of the environment.
(3) Rapid industrialization
• Rapid industrialization has led to deforestation, and depletion of natural resources.
• It leads to contamination of water due to the accumulation of increasing quantity of toxic
substances and industrial wastes in the water bodies.
15. 4) Urbanization
• A large migration of population from rural to urban areas results in the fast growth
of slum areas.
• It leads to the excess burden on the existing infrastructural activities.
(5) Deforestation
• Deforestation refers to cutting down of trees, clearing forest, etc.
• It adversely affects the environment and causes other problems.
(6) Increased use of insecticides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers
• Farmers and workers suffer health problems due to the increased use of poisonous
insecticides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers.
• The crop generated also contains chemical elements in it.
16. Why Sustainable Development
It is not limited to one community, rather it connects space and time.
It prevent degradation of the environment and laying emphasis on protecting the environment
Using the available resources judiciously and working towards maintaining the ecological balance.
Prevents over-exploitation of resources
It is a continuous process.
Focuses on Sustainable Farming Methods
As it focuses on preserving the ecosystem, it automatically helps in maintaining and protecting
biodiversity.
It helps in developing eco-friendly global culture.
It is not contradictory to profit, development or growth, It only plan out limits.
It is concerned with the carrying capacity of the natural systems with the social challenges facing
humanity
17. Achieving Sustainable Development
• It can be achieved by restricting
human activities.
• Technological development should be
input effective and not input utilizing.
• The rate of consumption should not
surpass the rate of salvation.
• For renewable resources, the rate of
consumption should not surpass the
rate of production of renewable
substitutes.
• All types of pollution should be
minimized.
• It can be achieved by sensible use of
natural resources
