Opportunities For Sustainable Building Practices...
Opportunities in renewable energy in tourism Our initial assessment for The Birchwood Hotel
down town St. Petersburg focused on examining key areas for sustainable building practices
consistent with Green Key guidelines. The areas assessed were corporate environmental
management, housekeeping, conference and meeting spaces, food and beverage, engineering and
maintenance. Summing up the condition of each system served as a target for the property owners
to make improvements for their short and long term needs that will align the property s mission
and goals to be more in line with Energy Conservationand Sustainable Business practices. The
refurbished property has been able to achieve its own dГ©cor and exclusive identity, but after the
assessment was graded, it was only able to earn one Green Key certification.

they are suffering due to poorly conceived. The property doesn t have the size and scale to

Overview and Background of Lean Manufacturing
Overview and Background of Lean Manufacturing
History of Lean Manufacturing
Toyota Production System Overview
The concept of Lean Manufacturing gets is roots from car manufacturing in the early 1930s and
1940s. Stemming from innovative production techniques developed and implemented by Henry
Ford, modern day Lean Manufacturing was developed by Taiichi Ohno of Toyota Motor Company
after World War II as a result of the diverse market conditions the company faced.
At a time when western car manufactures, like Ford and General Motors, where using mass
production and economies of scale manufacturing methods, Toyota faced very different business
conditions. Toyota s market was very small and diverse, leaving the organization to... Show more

Just as with Lean Manufacturing, Lean Construction focuses on establishing value, as defined by
the customer, it with the goal of constructing a product that delivers on that value. Thus, value must
come before planning and design. (Mohammed).
Principle 2: Identify and Map Value Stream
In Lean Manufacturing the value stream identifies the necessary steps for developing and creating a
product that is valuable from the customer s perspective. In other words, the value stream
determines how and when decisions are made in the production process.
Lean Construction uses a similar technique called value stream mapping, as known as process
mapping, to understand how a construction project will be designed, supplied, and built. Hence, this
is where the planning and design aspects mentioned in the above section, come into play. Typical
Lean Construction value stream maps consist of the following:
Problem solving tasks: ranging from concept through detailed design and engineering to production
launch.
Information management tasks: ranging from order taking through detailed scheduling to delivery.
Physical transformation tasks: ranging from raw materials to producing finished products that get
delivered into the hands of the customer.
As demonstrated above, these mapping techniques highlight how the construction plan, design,
logistics, and operation

But a handful of them really know the art of preparing effective, concise and readable in a short
time notes. You need to go through these small notes a few days or even few hours before and

your future in the exam. The first step is to maintain book, a dedicated register or even take
down notes on flip cards or pages if you are comfortable with this method. Next, divide the pages by
topics or months. In a specific month you could write events topic wise on each page or you could
divide the register topic wise, like some pages devoted exclusively for sports,

Eating For Victory Chapter Summary
In the years after the Second World War, people created uncountable numbers of historiographical
research on various topics related to the war, such as military tactics in battles, individual groups of
men during their time in service, and other such subjects. Not much surprise exists then, that
women s actions in World War II eventually would also gain interest and publication for the public,
though it did not gain an undivided focus until the advent of women s and social history grew
momentum. Women, despite being half of the world s population, doubtlessly had acted during the
war years, although limited by social gender expectations of the period. As time passes from 1945,
more interest in the lives of women and their effect on the war... Show more content on

Likely due to the plethora of evidence this sub group can give, the oldest sources on this particular
subject come from a domestic lens, which the following sources indicate in their arguments. The
monograph Eating for Victory: Food Rationing and the politics of Domesticity by Amy Bentley
centers on the American mindset concerning food that changed during World War II; her thesis
maintaining that the Roosevelt administration s decision to institute legal rationing, proven in its
ethical rightness in that this choice ultimately bettered the average American s diet. Bentley
justifies it through the apparent constraints of the massive undertaking the World War would
require through the cultural and social approaches, which suited the gendered approach the author
applied to this matter. And while she mentions economic and military approaches as well, a deeper
analysis of the propaganda towards women in families is the central emphasis in many chapters of
the book. Bentley collected information from many archival records such as the United States Food
Administration and information contained within the Office of War Information (OWI). Her final
conclusion is that the rationing process on the American home front during World War II had a
positive outcome. Through these conclusions, however, develops a contrasting opinion from other
historians; as her near overgeneralization of American unity

The Founding Fathers Of Virtue Ethics
Virtue ethics is considered as one of the three major approaches in normative ethics. The founding
fathers of Virtue ethics are Plato and more particularly Aristotle. It suffered a momentary eclipse
during the nineteenth century but re emerged in the late 1950 s in Anglo American philosophy
(Virtue Ethics, 2012). The re emergence had an effect on the other two approaches. The
consequence of this is the fact that is now necessary to distinguish virtueethics from virtue theory.
Kant s virtue theory has conveyed philosophers attention to Kant s Doctrine of Virtue and the
utilitarian s have developed consequentialist virtue theories. A virtue such as honesty or generosity
is not just a tendency to do what is honest or generous, nor

The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair Essay
The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, became an instant classic in 1906, and has become possibly one
of the most referenced books in history and political science classrooms all over the United
States, according to Dustin LaBarge (LaBarge para.1). Sinclair s novel has generated worldwide
awareness of the repulsive meat packing industry. I found the book intriguing, because of the
detail that was added in to make sure nothing was left out. There were moments of the story that
were too detailed in my opinion causing me to lose interest, but overall I found to have learned
something I would probably have not known about. The story is based on the lives of two newly
married Lithuanians, Jurgis and Ona. The story begins with their wedding... Show more content on

He illustrates the lack of job security, women s rights, and fair treatment in general. The family
believes they are being blessed with the jobs they have encountered and have been given. What
they don t know is the risks that come along with the jobs. Everything in Packingtown comes with a
price.
The children of the family also try to help out and make ends meet, but then Jurgis gets a rolled
ankle and must take days off of work. He comes to find that his place has been taken and thus has
difficulty finding more work. Ona has also begun to help out, but eventually comes in contact with
a man who rapes her daily after work. Jurgis goes mad and is sent to jail following a fight between
Jurgis and that man.
The last few chapters of the novel reveal Sinclair s political opinions. Jurgis attends a number of
rallies and finds himself in the middle of the workers rights reform. He has a change of heart and
we find him trying to undo some of the things he has been a part of. In the closing scene of The
Jungle, Sinclair describes the hope of a bright new future that the Socialist Party will bring to the
workers and the nation. Here Sinclair s main purpose for writing the book is revealed. He does
want to make an impact about the packing industry. He certainly feels strongly about how our food
is being processed. But the main thing he is writing about is the right of the workers. According to
Eric Schlosser at The Chicago Tribune, Sinclair believed

Racial Discrimination of Stop and Frisk in the NYPD
The New York City Police Department stop and frisk impacts thousands of peoples lives
everyday, and unfortunately most of the cases involve African American and Hispanic Males,
which shows racism is still present in the world we live in today. Prior to speaking about a stop

Stop and frisk occurs when an officer of the law temporarily detains an individual or group of
people on the street to question them about the reason or reasons in which they were stopped,
and possibly also frisking or searching them for the safety of the officers and the detainees as well.
A stop may end with someone being arrested or given a ticket if evidence of a crime being

from having their fourth amendment rights being abused by these officers who do not follow
protocol and conduct unlawful searches and seizures as stated in the U.S Constitution. The only
time that frisking someone can be done without legal issues is when the officer has a reason to

An Analysis Of Pope Innocent IV
This source is an excerpt from a letter from Pope Innocent IV to King henry III of England on the
23rd January 1245, shortly after the sacking of Jerusalem by Khwarezmian forces in the same year.
When a Pope traditionally launches a crusade it is accompanied with excitatoria, formal letters
appealing to nobility and kings for contribution to the forthcoming campaign. Although this letter
was intended for the English king, Peter Jackson implies that the missing letter to King Louis IX
would have almost have been identical concerning its content, language and the overarching appeal
for the crusade to respond to the sacking of Jerusalem at the hands of the Khwarezmians.
Discussion on finances and indulgences for the crusade is mentioned in the... Show more content on

He immediately found himself in a difficult position as pope, with numerous issues arising, such
as the hostility escalating between the Holy Roman Emperor and the papacy, the increase of
Islamic incursions into the Holy Land and of course the Mongol invasion of Europe. There was
indeed prior warning of the defensive vulnerability of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, as Pope
Innocent IV received a letter complaining that there were only one hundred pilgrim knights
defending the city, and more reinforcements from Western Europe was needed for protection.
Although this may have been note by the newly appointed Pope, the struggle with the Holy
Roman Emperor through the continuation of Pope Gregory IX s policy against Frederick II
may have overshadowed this plea from the Holy Land. In fact, Pope Innocent IV s position was
so untenable in Rome due to the Emperor s actions to increase dissent, that he fled to Lyon and
immediately set about organising the Council of Lyon for 1245. His letter to Henry III was part
of an effort from his base in Lyon to call for a crusade in reaction to the sacking of Jerusalem by
the Khwarezmians, but he struggled to garner much support for the crusade due to the internal
struggles within Europe, with only King Louis IX fully committed to the campaign. The
relationship between Pope Innocent IV and King Henry III is one of note, as since the ties
between Rome and the English King were established early through the papal support given to
Henry at the end of the Baron s war. The papacy desperately needed political allies due to the
increasing threat posed by the military might of the Holy Roman Emperor and Henry II could be
said to be one of them. Although the papacy could find respite through their relationship between
the King of France and King of England respectively, the relationship between the two kingdoms
was strenuous. A crusade

Ronald Reagan s Evil Empire Speech
In May 1981, Soviet leader, Yuri Andropov (a former chairman of the KGB) launched a program
called Operation RYAN ( Nuclear Missile Attack ) a response to the presumption that the United
States would orchestrate an imminent first strike attack. The program focused on compiling
intelligence on supposed contingency plans of the United Statesto launch a nuclear first strike
against the Soviet Union.
On September 14, 1982 President Reagan and Dr. Edward Teller (father of the hydrogen bomb)
held a meeting to discuss how to develop the most effective method of defense against
intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Teller wrote Reagan a two page letter in which he

This address was given while Congress was debating a resolution in support of a nuclear freeze, a
doctrine supported by the Soviet Union that would have prevented the deployment of U.S. cruise
and Pershing II Missiles in Europe. 1 In this speech, Reagan referred to the Soviet Union as focus
of evil in the modern world, asking that Americans to pray for the salvation of those living in
totalitarian darkness.
A couple of weeks later, on March 23 1983, Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative. In his
plan, Reagan believed such program would improve the security of the United States while
simultaneously gaining a strategic and technological advantage over the Soviet Union.
The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), also known as Star Wars, was first initiated in March 1983
under President Ronald Reagan. The purpose of such a program was to develop a sophisticated anti
ballistic missile system to that would prevent missile attacks from other countries, specifically the
Soviet Union. The Strategic Defense Initiative was the United States response to possible nuclear
attacks from afar. Concerns raised about the program included contravening the anti ballistic missile
(ABM) of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks () to embark upon groundbreaking research into a
national defense system that could make nuclear weapons

Assess the Usefulness of Functionalist Approaches in...
Functionalists look at society as a whole. They explain crime and deviance by stating that the
source of deviance lies in the nature of society rather than the individual. Durkheim states that
crime and deviance is inevitable and a certain level is necessary for society to exist. He also
claims that it is a positive aspect of society as it shows examples of rights and wrongs within
society and by punishing offenders, through ways such as public humiliation and portraying crime
as wrong, raises awareness of crime and therefore deters others from committing crime along with
creating a collective conscience. He also argues that crime and deviance allows social change to
occur which is needed in order for society to remain stable. Durkheim s... Show more content on

He believes that the formation of the subcultures release the status frustration by creating their own
values for achieving status and therefore deviant behaviour becomes normal and valued within the
group. This is useful when looking at explanations of crime as it highlights that crime and
deviance is a collective rational response to the norms and values of society. However, Cohen fails
to consider why women in society commit crimes and form subcultures. He has also been criticised
as we cannot be sure that the working class know the middle class values enough in order to
purposely reject them. Furthermore, Cloward and Ohlin combine Merton and Cohen s theories by
stating that there is a legitimate opportunity such as passing exams and getting a job, and an
illegitimate opportunity, such as gangs. They believe that the working class have easier access to
the illegitimate structure meaning that it is easier for them to commit more crimes and so face
more pressure to do so. Cloward and Ohlin claim that there are 3 types of subcultures: criminal
subculture in which people climb the professional criminal hierarchy, conflict subculture in which
there is little/no social cohesion and retreatest subcultures in which people fail in both the legitimate
and illegitimate opportunity and retreat to things such as alcohol and drugs. This is useful when

A Brief Note On Apathy And The Death Of The Road
Apathy
Imagine you are driving down the road late to work. On the side of the road you see that two
cars have been in a serious accident. You almost pull over, when you remember how late you are
for work. So instead, you keep driving telling yourself that someone else who has more time will
stop and help them. When you finally arrive at work, you see that a homeless woman is sitting
near the building you work at asking for money. You re already seventeen minutes late for work,
and you don t have time to dig out your wallet and find spare change. Plus, the woman could just
be manipulating people into thinking she s homeless to get money, so why help her and waste your
money on someone you can t guarantee needs the help? Other people can ... Show more content on

So when a teenager acts out in apathetic defiance saying I don t care about my grades, and I m not
fixing them because school sucks their brains are processing the future actions they can take to fix
their grades next term instead of dwelling on what their current grades are. While their parents
brains are processing this information on a much higher thinking level, taking their person
experiences, guilt for not pushing their child harder, and feeling bad for their child and their poor
grades into account. However the parent s perspective on this issue can come across as overbearing,
causing the teen to resort to an even more apathetic defiance, thus making the situation worse.
Another example of this is with apathy as a pretense. For example when people use apathy to push
their feelings away. Instead of communicating, sometimes people choose to resort to not
communicating because they just don t care anymore and they don t want to make the situation
worse. However in doing so, the lack of communication makes things more complicated, leading to
even more chaos and arguments then there were in the first place, making it harder and harder to
care as things get more complicated. Now if you mix this in with the different opinions your brains
form, then each family member is going to be holding onto their

The Importance Of Creating A Business Website
Creating a business website can play a huge impact on your business. It helps establish the
background of your business. By having a secured website it shows people the kind of business it
presents to its customers. In this paper it will present the different ways to create a successful
business website.
First thing you want to do when creating a business is create a domain name. A domain name is the
name of the website. It ranges from 10 to 12 dollars to maintain the domain name every year. Next
the business should get a personalized business email, just in case people want to come in contact
with the business. Secure a business email and not a personal email for the business. Then next you
want to choose a website builder to get the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also make navigation through the website easy. Make navigation clear and simple on every page
(Fadeyev 2008).
A strategy to take mind of when creating a business website is to think of your competitors who
sell or do the same thing as the business. A strategy would be is to make yourself different than
other competitors, because 9 times out of 10 the customer is going to go to the business website
that offers more and is different. Being different is the key when creating a website because being
different the business can offer more value than its competitors (Fadeyev 2008).
Another Strategy for creating a business website is to choose a template and plugins for your
website. The business should choose a certain software for the website and a host for the website.
Choosing a template for the website will give your website the way the business want it to feel.
Next thing to do in order to have a successful business website is organize your website.
Organizing your website includes the logo usage, and how other visual effects are displayed on the
website feature. The business should organize and set the structure of information on your website
to give you good flexibility. Another way to have a successful website is to have good content. The

Comparing The Song Imagine And Richard Dawkins The God...
What if there is no heaven? What if there is no hell? John Lennon speculated on this in his song
Imagine , and many other men in history have produced thought provoking and controversial works
in regards to religious beliefs. We know so little about the world, but yet humans have killed each
other in the name of religion. Karl Marx went as far to say that religion is an opiate of the masses .
In addition to Marx s statement, Richard Dawkins The GodDelusion raises consciousness at the
price of controversy. On one hand, one may be enlightened by a different way of thinking than
what is the norm. On the other, people may be inclined to reject the book before they even pick it

If God/1 is equal to 1/God and a drop in the ocean is equal to the whole ocean, then it makes
sense to say that God is within all of us. Whether this is a mere thought or an ultimate truth, this is

With this same concept in mind, perhaps it is in the minds of many that we would be better off

Accents In To Kill A Mockingbird
People of many different regions and countries speak different languages. Even those that speak the
same language have different dialects and accents. Some people of different generations have
different dialects and slang. These accents cause people to judge a speaker because of their
antecedents. Although, many people attempt to stay open minded, people judge (sometimes
subconsciously) others education, class, and nationality, due to their way of speaking.
Sure, people attempt to be nonjudgmental and open minded. Today people really try not to be
judgemental over something someone can not control like their accents. People try to be politically
correct when describing someone and judging them by their language would not be politically
correct.
However, language is still a political instrument to describe someones identity. If a Russian with
good English was visiting the US and spoke to an American they may think they aren t trustworthy
because of the US s history with Russia. The American may be timid and uncomfortable near the
Russian just because they heard the Russian accents. Similarly, in the book To Kill A Mockingbird

Apollo 13, the 1995 motion picture directed by Ron Howard, is the true story of Jim Lovell, Fred
Haise, and Jack Swigert, a team of astronauts reassigned to a space flight with diminished
preparation time. This routine mission to the moon suddenly becomes a survival mission to safely
return home to Earth. The film details the circumstances affecting two separate but cohesive teams.
The purpose of this case analysis is to identify the critical events, explain the underlying causes of
why these events happened, and draw logical conclusions about the teamsВЎВЇ performances as
related to effective teamwork and leadership.

In this portion of the analysis, both evidence and inference will be used to examine the stages of
group development, the GRPВЎГєI Model, and team leadership.
The Forming Stage Both teams in the film progress through the four stages of group development;
forming, norming, storming and performing; however, not much emphasis is placed on the initial
forming stage. In the beginning of the film during a party celebrating the first successful moon
landing of Apollo 11, Lovell, Haise and Mattingly appear to have a working/social relationship as
they have already been slated as the team to fly the future Apollo 14 mission. It is inferred that
these men have previously been through the forming stage as the film does not depict a formal
introduction of the team members to each other.
The Norming Stage In the norming stage, the Apollo 13 crew is faced with creating cohesion and
unity, differentiating roles, identifying expectations and enhancing commitment (Whetten
Cameron, 2005). Due to Alan ShepherdВЎВЇs ear infection, however, the crew is bumped up to a
mission ahead of schedule, allowing only six months of actual preparation. The training sequences
within the film, as well as MattinglyВЎВЇs commitment for accuracy and precision, are clear
indicators that the crew is going through the norming stage. When Mattingly is unexpectedly
scrubbed from the mission, and Swigert is moved up into his place, the crew is forced to revert
back to the forming stage. The crew,

The Importance Of Diversity In Language Learning
Our understanding of language, as languages educators becomes part of our professional stance
and, as such, influences our curriculum, planning and classroom pedagogies. Teachers who view
language simply as code make acquiring grammar and vocabulary the primary, if not the only, goal
of language learning. Within such a limited approach, students do not begin to engage with language
as a communicative reality but simply as an intellectual exercise or as a work requiring
memorising. It is primarily a conventional symbol system concerned with communication or
coorperation between people (Lyons, 1981) Individual and social (Gee Hayes, 2011) people talk
like others and yet all have their own style (Bakhtin, 1981, 1986). Every language shares the same
basic design properties nouns, verbs, sentences, and clauses (Chomsky, 1965).
Language is not just a set of rules that tells us how to talk with the correct grammar. A cognitive
phenomenon a set of rules in our minds or brains that tells us how to speak grammatically (Clark,
1996) and Cannot be thought of as only a system of formal elements; have to take into account its
functions (Brumfit, 1994)
Variety is the spice of life . Diversity makes life interesting and gives it all its flavour. This
phrase comes from William Cowper s poem, The Task (1785). I believe in this saying as it is
totally true and as a current Early Childhood Educator, I am embedding awareness and appreciation
for different culture in my daily

Essay Judith and Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes
I had never heard of the artist Artemisia Gentileschi before this introductory Art course. Of all the
paintings and sculptures found within the book, it was her work that stood out and spoke to me.
Judith and Maidservant with the head of Holofernes is a particularly rich oil painting by the
Italian Gentileschi, painted circa 1625 Europe. Her large canvas measures 72 and 1/2 inches by 55
and 3/4 inches and began as a biblical story telling inspiration come to life within the oil. Located at
the Detroit Institute of Arts, the paintingwas a gift to the institute from Art collector Mr. Leslie H.
Green in 1952. Artemisia was the daughter of a painter (and caravaggioinfluenced) Orazio
Gentileschi, she was also the wife of little known artist... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Artemisia continued an affair with Agostino under the promise of marriage, when the marriage
never happened, her father brought charges against Tassi and a trial ensued, to which Artemisia was
tortured during a gynecological examination for the trial. Again life imitating art and a testament
toward the women depicted in her paintings. Miss Gentileschi married a man named Pierantonio
Stiattesi and they moved to Florence. As mentioned, Artemisia had 5 children, however only her
daughter Prudentia survived into adulthood. After her mother s death in 1656, Prudentia
disappeared from history.
I believe, as do others, Judith and the Maidservant with the head of Holofernes is perhaps homage
to her rape and subsequent treatment during her adolescent years. Her painting`s inspiration also
plays tribute to the biblical story of Judith, who sleeps with the King Holofernes and than
decapitates the drunk King in his sleep. Both Judith and the maidservant are now dominate in the
painting over the dead male, they are quiet, unobtrusive and tense. A single candle burns within
the dark room creating stark contrast between light and dark. The artist`s great skill can be seen
in the bright highlighted details of Judith s hand and in the folds of clothing of the two. Depth and
dark core detail can also be seen in the dark and reflective shadow areas within the room. Judith s
hand covers the candlelight as she peers at the outside world, perhaps in an attempt to help in

Cross Cultural Engagement Is A Process Of Learning
Introduction
Cross Cultural engagement is a process of learning to interact and communicate effectively with
individuals in another culture. Engagement implies a dynamic, two way process of communicating
with individuals in the host culture, rather than simply learning about them from a distance. It also
suggests active learning while crossing into another culture. Why is cross cultural engagement
important in a mission? In the Bible we see the twelve disciplines go on mission to spread the
Gospel. Jesus sent them on mission in groups with instructions. We, in today s era also need set of
instructions or need to know how to go on missions in other than our culture. It is a difficult and
humungous task to carry out. One need to first know what their mission is and how to pursue their
calling. My most favorite learning from this class is the work of Holy Spirit in a mission. Sunquist
writes and explains about it very beautifully. He says, Christian mission is not a project or a
function of the local church. It is very important, in the first place, not to make false
assumptions about a mission. Firstly, we need to clear our heads, realize and confess in our
hearts that we are working for God s mission, not for a church or any organization. Secondly, we
should discern and ask for help from the Holy Spirit to help and guide us through the mission that
Holy Spirit has chosen for us. Cross cultural engagement is led by the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:4 And
they were all filled with

Also, impart not only reading and writing, but also professional and technical knowledge, this can
lead to a fuller participation in economic and civic life (Cummins, 1994). On the other hand,
cultural literacy underlines the necessity for shared experiences and points of reference among an
interpretive society in order to comprehend texts adequately. As opposed to functional literacy
which focuses on skills, cultural literacy requires familiarity with a particular knowledge that is
essential to meaningful text interpretation in particular cultural contexts (Irvin et. al, 1994).
Furthermore, critical literacy is a sociocultural method that encourages individuals to analyse texts.
It is crucial in the learning of reading, because it enables people to comprehend how a text works
to position and who get benefits from this positioning. According to Cummins (1994), learners
should not only read the word, but read the world. Reading the word creates limitations in the ways
that individuals can understand the world. Critical literacy helps individuals to engage critically
with how they interpret and apply the knowledge in the society.
Concepts of literacy
There is a wide range of theorists and researchers agreed on necessity exceed the usual functional
literacy conception by define literacy in relation to particular social and cultural context (Leu et. al.,

Child Custody In The 1970 s
Child custody have been an issue for many years but no clear rules have been established until
approximately in the 1970 s. In the early colonial years, the arrangement was unappealing to
children and their mothers and possibly doing psychologically damage. Luckily, history has
evolved and children s well being has become a priority in divorcecases. Early in the 1800 s the
father was the head of the household and this included the children. Nurturing was not in
consideration but needing help with labor and the farm was a necessity. Children were viewed as
property and and had very little rights. In the 1800 s, Caroline Norton, who just recently divorced

The Benefits of Sin Revealed in Nathaniel Hawthorne s The...
The Benefits of Sin Revealed in The Scarlet Letter
According to Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter, each of us is born with original sin we
have inherited from the misdeeds of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. As Eve bit hungrily into
the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, starving for wisdom, little did she know that the entire
human race would thereafter be tainted by her sin. Hawthorne and many others believe that ever
since, human beings have been inclined to evil, more likely to disobey than to act in a godly
manner. This is a faithless, cynical view of humanity, but one perhaps justified by the actions of
Hester Prynne and the Reverend Dimmesdale. Sin seems to be an inevitable factor in their lives;

Questioning would have thrown their world into turmoil. They liked simple, written laws. Laws
of the heart were unimportant; after all, how could one live by laws that were not even
verbalized or written in any way? Puritan society was so rigid, so strict, that other rules were not
even considered. Hester s sin comes from her refusal to ignore that other set of rules: the rules of
her soul. I read about Hester s predicament and think, She was following her heart. How is being
true to herself a sin? But in the 17th century in Puritan America, the individual did not create
rules. Society did. Granted, the structure and laws of society are needed to some extent in order
to prevent chaos. But some matters are not the business of government. Hester s sin should have
been private, if it had been a sin at all in her eyes. She could not escape societal laws, though, and
her sin darkened in her eyes and made her ashamed.
It is no wonder that Hester is so confused by her sin and its implications, because her guilt is
contradictory in and of itself. The scarlet letter she wears, the symbol of her sin, and her little
daughter Pearl, the product of her sin, remind her every day of how she has done wrong. And yet,
in some mysterious way, these marks of sin save her from other sins. Pearl, though looked upon by
others as a devilish child, is perhaps a gift to Hester. Without Pearl,

[2]In the beautiful city of Babylon, there once lived a man named Daniel. [1]He was an advisor

day, two of the king s other advisors watched as Daniel diligently prayed to God. [6]They hated
Daniel. He was always praying to God for guidance and he was always honest. He wanted to do
the right thing. The advisors despised him because of that. Then one day, as they watched Daniel

would be allowed to pray. [5]If they disobeyed this law they would be thrown into the Lion s Den

What I Learned When I Get A Traffic Ticket
September 9, 2015 was the first time I have ever gotten a ticket. It happened when I was in junior
college in Arizona. A lesson I learned is that speeding turns into going to court. My court date

thinking to myself, What the hell did I just get myself into? I was so nervous that before I left
Arizona Western Community College to head to the Yuma Municipal Court, I went to my

court in my whole life. So the drive over to the court was probably the longest drive ever. It felt
like when I drive from Ashland to Portland. My Aunty Donna who was the Poly mom for all the

thoughtI was going to jail for a couple of days and Donna was telling me the whole time, STOP you
are not going to jail for a traffic ticket! Yes, as silly as I sound thinking I was going to jail for a

Economic and Social Effects of Prohibition Essay example
Economic and Social Effects of Prohibition
There are many ways in which prohibition of alcohol consumption in the United States of
America, damaged the very economic and social aspects of American culture, that it was designed
to heal.
Prohibition did not achieve its goals. Instead, it added to the problems it was intended to solve. On
16th January 1920, one of the most common personal habits and customs of American society came
to a halt. The eighteenth amendment was implemented, making all importing, exporting,
transporting, selling and manufacturing of intoxicating liquors absolutely prohibited. This law was
created in the hope of achieving the reduction of alcohol consumption, which in turn would reduce:
crime, poverty, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result of this new law, a new social problem arose. Seldom has law been more flagrantly
violated. Not only did Americans continue to manufacture, barter, and possess alcohol; they drank
more of it. Americans who supported prohibition, argued that if drinking alcohol was illegal, the
public would recognize and respect the law, and in turn, would give it up. During the start of
prohibition, it appeared as though it was working. But, what was really going on, was that since
the transportation and production was not allowed, bootleggers had to find ways to do it without
being caught. The price of beer rose, because it had to be transported in large barrels, which was
more difficult. As a result, people started drinking more potent hard liquor. It took less to get drunk,
therefore it was easier to transport, thus, it was cheaper. Americans would drink this potent liquor
and get drunk a lot faster, for less money. As a downfall, however, the liquor had no standards.
The rate of alcohol related deaths due to poisoning drastically increased from 1,064 in 1920, to
4,154 in 1925.
One of the biggest outcomes of prohibition was the development of organized crime.
Because liquor was no longer legally available, the public turned to gangsters who took on the
bootlegging industry and supplied them with liquor. Because the industry was so immensely
profitable, more gangs participated. As a result of the money involved in the bootlegging industry,
there was much

Little Miss Sunshine Analysis
Little Miss Sunshine Essay
Maia Falkner
Little Miss Sunshine , is a film directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. This film is about a
girl named Olive (played by Abigail Breslin) and her family, on their physical and emotional journey
to a beauty pageant in California. In the film Little Miss Sunshine the important settings that helped
me understand an idea was, backstage the beauty pageant, onstage the beauty pageant and a
contrasting scene on the wharf. These three scenes helped me understand the idea of society s
unrealistic false standards and the intense judgement of those that fall beneath these standards. The
settings backstage and on stage the beauty pageant portray the idea that in order to obtain beauty ,
extreme lengths must be taken. In this setting young girls are stripped of their identity and
objectified. The falseness of the makeup and spray tan automatically creates an air of self doubt and
pressure to reach this unreachable perception of beauty . The setting on the wharf contrasts with the
falseness of the pageant and exposes the idea that judgement is all throughout life and somewhat
inescapable, that essentially life is one big beauty contest.
The first setting that portrays the idea of society s unrealistic standards is backstage at the Little
Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. This setting portrays this idea by showing us an environment in
which the falseness is almost overbearing. The hotel in which the pageant takes place is filled
with young girls being pampered by their mothers, spray tan, absurd amounts of makeup and
over the top costumes. These all represent this terribly false perception of beauty and objectify
these young girls. A downward, mid shot of a girl getting her legs spray tanned by her mother
describes the distorted reality of this situation. The girl s face is out of the shot which is
objectifying her and taking away her the identity. This is followed by a wide shot of Olive and
Sheryl walking through the room showing products and clothes. In this shot, we see a huge contrast
between the materialistic setting and the naturalness of Sheryl and Olive with their ordinary
clothes, natural hair, and pale skin. The mise en scene of the hotel lobby reinforces the

scramble to my feet in a panic as I find a wall and begin to follow it, hoping it will lead me to an
opening. Moving along the wall, I bump into a table and fall to the ground, choking even more.
Struggling to sit up, I see the silhouette of someone coming towards me. Black spots fill my vision
as I sink lower and lower to the ground. Wheezing and struggling to stay... Show more content on

I found sites that recommended everything from dream catchers to professional help, so I finally
got up the courage to talk to my birth parents about it. When I was eleven, they took me to a
doctor who prescribed medicine that would supposedly help me relax and sleep better. It didn t
work. Within the span of two years I had visited four doctors, including psychiatrists, that each
gave me a new type of medicine to help. None of their methods worked so one day I straightened
my shoulders, put a skip in my step and a smile on my face and told my parents that the
nightmares had stopped and that I was better. We celebrated with homemade chocolate sundaes
and Finding Nemo. That night, the nightmares persisted. The laptop that usually presided on the
desk under her lofted bed was gone, indicating she must have been back this morning to grab it

The Stages Of An Unreflective Thinker
Critical thinking is being able to evaluate an issue or situation to form a judgment. Having the
ability to think clearly and rationally, being able to have an argument and understand the main
concept and question any doubts you have and making your own conclusion. Being a good
critical thinker can help you in a lot of ways professionally and personally. Employers often want
to see someone that can think rationally and that is able to make their business grow and develop
they want someone that will take initiative in crucial situations. In our personal lives, it is
important so we learn how to distinguish the main facts about an argument and learn to analyze
the problem and make a conclusion of what needs to be done to help solve and prevent any future
problems. According to Linda Elder and Richard Paul, there are six stages of a critical thinker the
unreflective thinker, the challenged thinker, the beginning thinker, the advanced thinker, and
finally the accomplished thinker which is where we would all want to be in. (The Critical
Thinking Community , 2010) Stage one the unreflective thinker is simply someone that is
unaware of what role thinking is playing in their lives. I think we are all born as an unreflective

develop better thinking skills and end up dying the same way. Being an unreflective thinker means
that you know you have a problem but don t take the time or don t

Proper APA Formating In-Text Citations
It is important to learn and utilize proper APA formatting of in text citations and references because
it gives credit to the sources you used to complete your research.
As a student and a person in general, I don t know everything. So, to make my research paper or
essay credible, I use sources from someone who knows what they re talking about to make my
research credible and accurate. If I don t cite sources, It would be plagiarism because I used
someone else s words as my own. Plagiarism is unethical and possibly a crime. That is why it is
important to use proper APA formatting for in text citations and references.

Stemming from innovative production techniques developed and implemented by Henry Ford, modern day Lean Manufacturing was developed by Taiichi Ohno of Toyota Motor Company after World War II as a result of the diverse market conditions the company faced. Just as with Lean Manufacturing, Lean Construction focuses on establishing value, as defined by the customer, it with the goal of constructing a product that delivers on that value. Thus, value must come before planning and design. (Mohammed). Principle 2: Identify and Map Value Stream In Lean Manufacturing the value stream identifies the necessary steps for developing and creating a product that is valuable from the customer s perspective. In other words, the value stream determines how and when decisions are made in the production process. Lean Construction uses a similar technique called value stream mapping, as known as process mapping, to understand how a construction project will be designed, supplied, and built. Hence, this is where the planning and design aspects mentioned in the above section, come into play. Typical Lean Construction value stream maps consist of the following: Problem solving tasks: ranging from concept through detailed design and engineering to production launch. Information management tasks: ranging from order taking through detailed scheduling to delivery. Physical transformation tasks: ranging from raw materials to producing finished products that get delivered into the hands of the customer. Eating For Victory Chapter Summary In the years after the Second World War, people created uncountable numbers of historiographical research on various topics related to the war, such as military tactics in battles, individual groups of men during their time in service, and other such subjects. Not much surprise exists then, that women s actions in World War II eventually would also gain interest and publication for the public, though it did not gain an undivided focus until the advent of women s and social history grew momentum. Women, despite being half of the world s population, doubtlessly had acted during the war years, although limited by social gender expectations of the period. The monograph Eating for Victory: Food Rationing and the politics of Domesticity by Amy Bentley centers on the American mindset concerning food that changed during World War II; her thesis maintaining that the Roosevelt administration s decision to institute legal rationing, proven in its ethical rightness in that this choice ultimately bettered the average American s diet. Bentley justifies it through the apparent constraints of the massive undertaking the World War would require through the cultural and social approaches, which suited the gendered approach the author applied to this matter. And while she mentions economic and military approaches as well, a deeper analysis of the propaganda towards women in families is the central emphasis in many chapters of the book. Bentley collected information from many archival records such as the United States Food Administration and information contained within the Office of War Information (OWI). Her final conclusion is that the rationing process on the American home front during World War II had a positive outcome. Through these conclusions, however, develops a contrasting opinion from other historians; as her near overgeneralization of American unity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair Essay The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, became an instant classic in 1906, and has become possibly one of the most referenced books in history and political science classrooms all over the United States, according to Dustin LaBarge (LaBarge para.1). Sinclair s novel has generated worldwide awareness of the repulsive meat packing industry. I found the book intriguing, because of the detail that was added in to make sure nothing was left out. He immediately found himself in a difficult position as pope, with numerous issues arising, such as the hostility escalating between the Holy Roman Emperor and the papacy, the increase of Islamic incursions into the Holy Land and of course the Mongol invasion of Europe. There was indeed prior warning of the defensive vulnerability of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, as Pope Innocent IV received a letter complaining that there were only one hundred pilgrim knights defending the city, and more reinforcements from Western Europe was needed for protection. Although this may have been note by the newly appointed Pope, the struggle with the Holy Roman Emperor through the continuation of Pope Gregory IX s policy against Frederick II may have overshadowed this plea from the Holy Land. In fact, Pope Innocent IV s position was so untenable in Rome due to the Emperor s actions to increase dissent, that he fled to Lyon and immediately set about organising the Council of Lyon for 1245. His letter to Henry III was part of an effort from his base in Lyon to call for a crusade in reaction to the sacking of Jerusalem by the Khwarezmians, but he struggled to garner much support for the crusade due to the internal struggles within Europe, with only King Louis IX fully committed to the campaign. The relationship between Pope Innocent IV and King Henry III is one of note, as since the ties between Rome and the English King were established early through the papal support given to Henry at the end of the Baron s war. The papacy desperately needed political allies due to the increasing threat posed by the military might of the Holy Roman Emperor and Henry II could be said to be one of them. • 25. Cross Cultural Engagement Is A Process Of Learning Introduction Cross Cultural engagement is a process of learning to interact and communicate effectively with individuals in another culture. Engagement implies a dynamic, two way process of communicating with individuals in the host culture, rather than simply learning about them from a distance. It also suggests active learning while crossing into another culture. Why is cross cultural engagement important in a mission? In the Bible we see the twelve disciplines go on mission to spread the Gospel. Jesus sent them on mission in groups with instructions. We, in today s era also need set of instructions or need to know how to go on missions in other than our culture. It is a difficult and humungous task to carry out. One need to first know what their mission is and how to pursue their calling. My most favorite learning from this class is the work of Holy Spirit in a mission. Sunquist writes and explains about it very beautifully. He says, Christian mission is not a project or a function of the local church. It is very important, in the first place, not to make false assumptions about a mission. Firstly, we need to clear our heads, realize and confess in our hearts that we are working for God s mission, not for a church or any organization. Secondly, we should discern and ask for help from the Holy Spirit to help and guide us through the mission that Holy Spirit has chosen for us. Cross cultural engagement is led by the Holy Spirit. As opposed to functional literacy which focuses on skills, cultural literacy requires familiarity with a particular knowledge that is essential to meaningful text interpretation in particular cultural contexts (Irvin et. al, 1994). Furthermore, critical literacy is a sociocultural method that encourages individuals to analyse texts. It is crucial in the learning of reading, because it enables people to comprehend how a text works to position and who get benefits from this positioning. According to Cummins (1994), learners should not only read the word, but read the world. Reading the word creates limitations in the ways that individuals can understand the world. Critical literacy helps individuals to engage critically with how they interpret and apply the knowledge in the society. The Benefits of Sin Revealed in The Scarlet Letter According to Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter, each of us is born with original sin we have inherited from the misdeeds of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. As Eve bit hungrily into the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, starving for wisdom, little did she know that the entire human race would thereafter be tainted by her sin. Hawthorne and many others believe that ever since, human beings have been inclined to evil, more likely to disobey than to act in a godly manner. This is a faithless, cynical view of humanity, but one perhaps justified by the actions of Hester Prynne and the Reverend Dimmesdale. Sin seems to be an inevitable factor in their lives; though ... Laws of the heart were unimportant; after all, how could one live by laws that were not even verbalized or written in any way? Puritan society was so rigid, so strict, that other rules were not even considered. Hester s sin comes from her refusal to ignore that other set of rules: the rules of her soul. I read about Hester s predicament and think, She was following her heart. How is being true to herself a sin? But in the 17th century in Puritan America, the individual did not create rules. Society did. Granted, the structure and laws of society are needed to some extent in order to prevent chaos. But some matters are not the business of government. Hester s sin should have been private, if it had been a sin at all in her eyes. She could not escape societal laws, though, and her sin darkened in her eyes and made her ashamed. It is no wonder that Hester is so confused by her sin and its implications, because her guilt is contradictory in and of itself. The scarlet letter she wears, the symbol of her sin, and her little daughter Pearl, the product of her sin, remind her every day of how she has done wrong. And yet, in some mysterious way, these marks of sin save her from other sins. Pearl, though looked upon by others as a devilish child, is perhaps a gift to Hester. Without Pearl, ... Economic and Social Effects of Prohibition Essay example Economic and Social Effects of Prohibition There are many ways in which prohibition of alcohol consumption in the United States of America, damaged the very economic and social aspects of American culture, that it was designed to heal. Prohibition did not achieve its goals. Instead, it added to the problems it was intended to solve. On 16th January 1920, one of the most common personal habits and customs of American society came to a halt. The eighteenth amendment was implemented, making all importing, exporting, transporting, selling and manufacturing of intoxicating liquors absolutely prohibited. As a result of this new law, a new social problem arose. Seldom has law been more flagrantly violated. Not only did Americans continue to manufacture, barter, and possess alcohol; they drank more of it. Americans who supported prohibition, argued that if drinking alcohol was illegal, the public would recognize and respect the law, and in turn, would give it up. During the start of prohibition, it appeared as though it was working. But, what was really going on, was that since the transportation and production was not allowed, bootleggers had to find ways to do it without being caught. The price of beer rose, because it had to be transported in large barrels, which was more difficult. As a result, people started drinking more potent hard liquor. It took less to get drunk, therefore it was easier to transport, thus, it was cheaper. Americans would drink this potent liquor and get drunk a lot faster, for less money. As a downfall, however, the liquor had no standards. The rate of alcohol related deaths due to poisoning drastically increased from 1,064 in 1920, to 4,154 in 1925. One of the biggest outcomes of prohibition was the development of organized crime. Because liquor was no longer legally available, the public turned to gangsters who took on the bootlegging industry and supplied them with liquor. Because the industry was so immensely profitable, more gangs participated. As a result of the money involved in the bootlegging industry, there was much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Little Miss Sunshine Analysis Little Miss Sunshine Essay Maia Falkner Little Miss Sunshine , is a film directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. This film is about a girl named Olive (played by Abigail Breslin) and her family, on their physical and emotional journey to a beauty pageant in California. In the film Little Miss Sunshine the important settings that helped me understand an idea was, backstage the beauty pageant, onstage the beauty pageant and a contrasting scene on the wharf. These three scenes helped me understand the idea of society s unrealistic false standards and the intense judgement of those that fall beneath these standards. The settings backstage and on stage the beauty pageant portray the idea that in order to obtain beauty , extreme lengths must be taken. In this setting young girls are stripped of their identity and objectified. The falseness of the makeup and spray tan automatically creates an air of self doubt and pressure to reach this unreachable perception of beauty . The setting on the wharf contrasts with the falseness of the pageant and exposes the idea that judgement is all throughout life and somewhat inescapable, that essentially life is one big beauty contest. The first setting that portrays the idea of society s unrealistic standards is backstage at the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. This setting portrays this idea by showing us an environment in which the falseness is almost overbearing. The hotel in which the pageant takes place is filled with young girls being pampered by their mothers, spray tan, absurd amounts of makeup and over the top costumes. These all represent this terribly false perception of beauty and objectify these young girls. A downward, mid shot of a girl getting her legs spray tanned by her mother describes the distorted reality of this situation. The girl s face is out of the shot which is objectifying her and taking away her the identity. This is followed by a wide shot of Olive and Sheryl walking through the room showing products and clothes. In this shot, we see a huge contrast between the materialistic setting and the naturalness of Sheryl and Olive with their ordinary clothes, natural hair, and pale skin. The mise en scene of the hotel lobby reinforces the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
