For centuries, sin has been a struggle in each individual s daily life. From the beginning of time, Satan
has lured people to commit sins straying them away from God. As sins can become addictive, people
crave the feeling of the satisfaction from committing wrong doings. Every day humans consciously
commit sins like lust, gluttony, violence, greed, and hypocrisy. Hypocrites are people that do not
practice the type of lifestyle they tell others to practice. The sin that humans struggle with the most in
The Inferno by Dante Alighieri is hypocrisy because human beings hold other people to higher
standards, are ashamed of their ways, and seek to impress others. Human beings are prone to hold
loved ones to higher standards, leading to the sin of hypocrisy. Though hypocrisy is wrong, in many
situations, hypocrites believes that they are lying to others in order to better improve another person s
life. Many adults are hypocrites towards their children because they want better for them. For
example, if a mother of a teenage son is addicted to smoking cigarettes, the mother would commit
hypocrisy if she told the son not to smoke them. Though morally it is right for the mother to look out
for her son and make sure he is safe, the practice of the mother telling her son to not smoke like she
does would still be considered a sin according to Dante in The Inferno. Professional researchers have
determined that power makes people stricter in moral judgment of others while being less strict of
their own behavior ( If Power Corrupts Are the Powerful Absolutely Hypocritical ). It is difficult for
people to lead the same kind of life they want others to lead. People tend to want to give good advice
to strengthen loved ones rather than be truthful or not say anything at all. Humans psychologically
have a hard time accepting their bad habits, and therefore choose to ignore them, not being truthful
with themselves, God, and those surrounding them. Hypocrisy is a common sin among people because
people are ashamed of their poor ways in life. It is known that humans become anxious about their
reputation and social status in public. For reputations determine people s friends, jobs, and quality of
