Candide Paper
Candide is a fictional satire of the optimism many philosophers had for life in general during the mid
1700 s written in response to Alexander Pope s An Essay on Man. Written by Voltaire, the literary
alias of Francois Marie Arouet, the satire covers religion, the wealthy, love, why people thought
natural disasters occurred and especially, philosophy. The novel even goes on to make fun of the art of
literature by giving ridiculous chapter headings. Just about everything Voltaire put into Candide is
designed to question and satirize real world injustices. In effect Candide is the 18th century equivalent
of a modern day sitcom (Shmoop).
Just as modern day sitcoms expose the injustices of the world in an overly exaggerated and humorous

One example of the sarcasm on this subject is found in the scene where Candide is about to save an
Anabaptist who had just fallen into a heavy seas. This Anabaptist was responsible for nursing both
Candide and Dr. Pangloss, a philosopher back to health. He had fallen into the sea as a result of
rescuing a falling sailor. When Candide got ready to go in after the Anabaptist but Dr. Pangloss
stopped him telling him that the water was there put there for the purpose of drowning the Anabaptist.
Scenes like this appear and play out so quickly the audience is left asking themselves, Did that really
just happen? The scene is so ludicrous that nobody can take it seriously and therefore it is perceived as
a joke. By creating such a silly way in which philosophy is used, Voltaire gives the audience a reason
to laugh at would otherwise be thought of as a serious subject.
In addition to Philosophy, Voltaire also ridicules complacency throughout the entirety of his novel.
Complacency is shown as a product of the philosophical ideas portrayed through Candide and in many
scenes is the only reason that things are allowed to go from bad to worse. It is displayed while the
Anabaptist is drowning and again during the earthquake is Lisbon. During this scene, Candide is
begging for help after being hit in the head by a piece of a building and buried by rubble. However,
Dr. Pangloss would rather philosophize about why an

Holliday In The Movie Tombstone
While Doc was still in Fort Griffin with Kate, he found himself in an altercation with a man named Ed
Bailey. Bailey was purposefully agitating Holliday during a card game, which would end with Bailey
pulling a gun on Holliday. Doc, in self defense (according to some), pulled a knife and slashed Bailey
across the stomach, cause blood the spill and Bailey to fall across the table (This altercation can be
seen in the movie Tombstone, about 12 minutes into the movie). Knowing it was of good reason,
Holliday did not run, and would later be arrested. This caused a group of people to form to try and get
revenge on Holliday, something Kate saw coming. Fearing for Doc s life, and thinking quickly, Kate
went to the hotel where Holliday was being held

Deviance Essay
Deviance is what is considered a violation of cultural norms, and is something that is frowned upon
due to social norms. Society attempts to regulate people s thoughts and behaviors for social control.
There is a huge connection between the two because deviance varies with cultural norms, people
become deviant when others define them as such and both norms and the definition given involve
social power. Lets take the example of Brent Staple; new to New York, and was a graduate student
who had been an avid nightwalker. Mr. Staples became painfully aware that society had seen him as
deviant, because when they looked at him all they saw was a black man wearing bulky clothes late at
night walking around ready to attack someone. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So to sum that all up categories, labels and boundary lines are constructed so that social groups can
maintain a norm and they believe allows for a functioning society. You have racially motivated deviant
boundary lines so that social groups can segregate themselves from others to have power over each
other. So why do social groups label and categorize people as deviant based off of race? Labeling
someone as deviant because of race is away for society to try and strengthening themselves as racially
segregated groups. For example if a group of whites label a group of blacks as outcasts or deviants it
gives them social control and power. Another reason why social groups construct boundary lines,
labels and categorizes is because that is their way of keeping society functioning and keeping people
within the norms of what we know as normal and abnormal. If society cannot outcast people then we
have no hierarchy and no power. With Brent Staples he was feeling as an outsider, seeing fear from
people because of his race, his gender, his clothing as well as the fact he was out late walking around.
In my opinion society is taking away his power of freedom to be comfortable doing what many other
people were doing at night walking around, they took away his power to feel whole as an individual.
All of these factors gave the people around him the idea that he was something to be feared. It made
him feel that he needed to change, to conform to society so he would not be

QUT Art Museum
When visiting an exhibit space one of the first things a viewer sees is the area that the works are
exhibited in. There is more to exhibiting a work in a space than just putting in the room and expecting
that to be satisfactory. Lighting, walls, art placement, viewer interaction and many more are an
important park of how successful an exhibit can be.
When a viewer enters the QUT Art Museum they first see the reception desk with the typical white
walls that one would expect from a museum or gallery. To the right of this desk one can see a large
room with black walls that are in direct contrast to the reception area, inviting the viewer to
investigate what this room is. Walking towards the room the viewer is confronted with a large
seemingly out of place wall separating the room seen from the reception from another room on the
right with what looks like a huge bolder. The left room has what looks like a bunch of randomly
assorted objects placed on a very large black circle. These objects are arranged on the floor

Essay On The Christmas Carol
I have to say, this play was intriguing to me, with the three interlocking plots, all of which surrounding
a common theme; marriages. I am not familiar with this play outside of this class, I had wanted to see
the Hollywood adaptation with Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Stanley Tucci, but I never got
around to it. To be honest, I didn t identify with any of the characters or the plot itself, which caused
great difficulty in choosing an angle for this paper.
The planned marriage between the good natured, appreciative Duke Theseus, who makes the best of
everything, and the Amazonian queen, the proud, fastidious Hippolyta was interesting, with a Pagan

Tips For A Home Inspection
Are you buying a home? Buying a home is probably the most complicated (and important) purchase
most of us will make in our lifetime. Like any major purchase there are features and specifications for
all homes. On paper it may be the features that sell the home but if any of those features are in
disrepair, you might be signing up for more than you bargained for and getting less than you paid for.
When you re purchasing a home, you need to know what you re getting. There are a few ways you can
help protect yourself one of them is with a thorough home inspection. Hiring a qualified home
inspection company to take a look at the home you re interested in buying is very important. At the
same time, you need to understand what s involved with a home inspection so years after your
purchase, you can keep up with the maintenance of your home. Here s why...
When you are buying a home it is important that you understanding what s involved with a home

First, it s important to note that some things are not covered in a standard home inspection:

1.6% of airtime to women s sports compared to 6.3% in 2004. In terms of overall sports coverage,

Annotated In Socrates The Apology
Socrates is put to trial by three accusers Meletus, Anytus, and Lycon. They claim that Socrates is an
evildoer, that he is corrupting the youth of Athens, and that he is promoting atheism. In The Apology
Socrates is not truly apologizing for his actions, rather he is defending himself and his actions.
At the beginning of Socrates trial he merely states that he has no experience with the courts and he
wishes no one to judge him by the way he speaks. The first set of charges against Socrates really
seems to worry him because he states the charges are all just rumors that are spread around about him,
that could relate back to a play he was in as a child. The first set of charges Socrates is charged with

second group he questions is the poets. He asks the poets to explain their poems to him but they

have nothing to back up their poems. The last group he questions is the craftsmen. He beings to notice
that although the craftsmen know about their own work, they are not very intelligent about any other

Medical Imaging Personal Statement
Is there a way to combine all of the medical imaging devices to create a complete and thorough
representation of the body? This question dogged my mind during the time between the end of high
school and the first year of my undergraduate study. This question also fueled my interest in the field
of medical imaging; which in turn, assisted me in determining the direction my undergraduate courses
and research topics would lead. Because of the endless possibilities in the field of medical imaging,
research in this field is both diverse and fascinating. Of particular interest to me in this field is the
research and development of medical imaging devices and software to better represent the body. As

convenience of such systems. This concept was further developed by a course on image processing

encompass the topic. In addition, multiple courses in the academic field of biophysics expanded my
knowledge of human biomechanics and the physics of modern medical imaging systems. Learning
how CT, x ray, PET, MRI, ultrasounds and photoacoustic imaging functioned and how computers

Amelia Earhart Speech
Have you ever been daring enough to think outside the box or do something out of the ordinary?
Maybe you have, or maybe you ve been too scared to do it. Someone who wasn t afraid was Amelia
Earhart. She did something no one else had done or attempted to do before. Amelia Earhart, daring
and outgoing from the start of her life, achieved many things, which is why she should be remembered
because, indeed, flying is what ended her life.
Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1898, in Atchison, Kansas. Around 1907, her whole family
moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Amelia was a full out tomboy during her whole childhood. She once slid
a sled off a barn roof, calling it a roller coaster. She also played all the sports that, normally, only boys
played like football and basketball. During the summer of 1907, Amelia s dad, Edwin, took her and
her sister, Muriel, to the Des Moines State Fair. Edwin was really attracted to the model airplane at the
fair. On the other hand, Muriel and Amelia, surprisingly, were unamused. They just thought the plane
was boring. (Lardner, 205 207).
In 1917, Amelia and her mother took a trip to Toronto, Canada, even though, there was a war
happening. Amelia saw wounded soldiers on her left and right. She knew she had to help in some way.
So, she stayed in Toronto and became a nurse s aid. This began her path down the medical and nursing
road. After the war, Amelia started premedical nursing school in New York. (Lardner, 207).
Amelia s love for planes started to

Conformity In 12 Angry Men
Can a minority influence the beliefs within a group setting? The 1957 movie, 12 Angry Men is a great
example of the minority influence process, the one change the beliefs of the other eleven. 12 Angry
Men is a jury group that decides if the defendant is guilty or not guilty of murder and sending the
defendant to the Electric Chair. During deliberation, prejudice, persuasion, conformity and cognitive
heuristics, all played a role in the interaction of the group and the final decision to equate the
defendant.
Persuasion
Henry Fonda, plays the role of juror number eight, who from the beginning keeps his conviction that
the defendant is not guilty due to reasonable doubt. Fonda uses arguments and reasoning to convince
the other jurors to deliver a not guilty verdict. For each witness testimony, Fonda was able to raise
doubt, like the L train causing enough noise that the elderly neighbor would be unable to hear the
father and son argue. As more jurors, changed their verdict to not guilty, they took on the role as
persuader, for example, juror number nine placed doubt on the female neighbor to be able to see the
murder because of it was doubtful she was wearing her glasses. One by one, Fonda was able to
convince the others to admit there was reasonable doubt.
Conformity
Conformity or socially acceptable behavior (Kassin, Fein, Markus, 2014), was also evident in the
movie. Juror number seven continuously chose the majority s verdict, not going against the larger
group, when more

The Importance Of Advertising
Everyday, everywhere we are inundated with advertisements. Whether it be while you are walking
down the street, shopping at the supermarket, or even in the safety of your own home enjoying some
tv in your down time. Advertising, whether it be big or small is everywhere; and in fact there are many
issues with it. Advertising that promotes a service or product in a deceptive way is highly unethical.
This is because it doesn t provide the customer with enough information that they need in order to
make a good, educated decision. And on another note, advertising is manipulative because of the way
it promotes consumption at such a large scale. Some of the main reasons for advertising being
dishonest are because it displays false savings, it exhibits unnecessary upselling and possibly most
importantly, it fuel s wasteful consumerism. The significance of this problem, comes in the form of the
large sums of money people waste on products they don t need and once purchased, realise they don t
want. Frankly it is just too overt to look past.
A way that advertising is deceptive is by showing false savings. Advertising a shocking price cut is a
common marketing tactic, but some businesses inflate their prices beforehand just so they can
advertise the sizable price cut. In effect, the customer does not receive a good deal because the
discount reflects virtual, not actual, savings. Word s such as closeout and clearance are commonly
used by companies, which give consumers the

Memory Distortion Research Paper
INTRODUCTION
Over three decades of research on memory distortion leaves no doubt that memory can be altered with
the use of suggestive techniques (Loftus Pickrell, 1995). Such suggestive memory manipulation
procedures strongly encourage people to recall past happenings and have repeatedly been used to
create reccollections of events that never took place (Lynn, Lock, Loftus, Krackow Lilienfeld, 2003).
Elizabeth Loftus pioneered research into the effects of misleading suggestive information on memory,
(Loftus, 1979; Loftus, Miller Burns, 1978, Wells Loftus 1984) and since, , researchers have
successfully implanted memories of a wide variety of ficticious events through use of suggestive
questions and statements; eg that individuals spilled punch at a wedding (Hyman, Husband Billings,
1995), that they broke a window with their hand (Garry, Manning, Loftus Sherman, 1996; Heaps
Nash, 1999), or that they got lost before age 3 (Mazzoni, Loftus, Seitz Lynn, 1999), amongst many
others.
People are often astoundingly confident in their distorted or false memories, often going on to
describe the pseudomemories in substantial detail. Sometimes, the memories persist even ... Show

The Advertising Strategy Of The Advertising Campaign For...
One think as parents worry about; well great parents, is about their kids safely and wellbeing. Parents
aren t constantly watching their teens/tweens daily actively. Like many other parents, we trust that our
kids are doing the right thing. Failure not check, could cause you your teen/tweens, lost in a world full
of inappropriate data usage. One of the greatest electronic company LG conducted a campaign in
hopes to changing teens mindset or attitude as it relates to inappropriate use of communication
electronically. Here stand limited serious mechanisms of this case study that must be similarly well
thought out when planning an actual advertising campaign for this wonderful electronic company LG
Mobile. Foremost, the product has specified that the purpose of the great movement is to growth their
product worth and inspire teens and tweens to relate with their brand which is the LG Mobile phone
product, though concurrently rising awareness around possible insensible actions such as mean or
inappropriate texting. Since, LG mobile has little television resources then their focus should be on
social sites platforms or networks. This type of marketing would be most beneficial advertising
approach, and more importantly it could cost them less money than advertising through television.
With so many ways to network among tweens/teens and adults, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram are
the ones that teens really gravitate to. Twitter currently have over 328 million active users, which rank
them 9th within the social network industry. Although it has little message capabilities, it seems to be
popular. Teens at times have very little attention span and this is primary the reason that teens are
attracted to it. This method of networking is extremely attractive to almost anyone with over 6,000
tweets basically every second. Facebook is another popular site that teens regular visit, and have a
remarkable 2 billion monthly active users, and happen to be the world largest social media platform,
how amazing is that! Base on research these social networking sites are extremely effective when used

Designing Customizable And Programmable Robots Essay
I still freshly remember that, as a six years old little boy, I dreamed to be a wizard because nothing is
more fantastic than creating objects with your own abilities. At the age of eight, I had a taste of dream
coming true: my parents bought me a Lego Robotic Command eXplorers (a robot kit that contains
software and hardware to create customizable and programmable robots). I built the robot s body
structure using limited Lego blocks and gave it life by programming. In the next 9 years, Lego robot
kits have been an essential component of my childhood. I learned basic robotic rules and skills in
primary school, practiced robotic assembling and manipulation in middle school, and started to show
my talent in high school. I lead my team and won the first place in the First Lego League (FLL) three
times in China and Best Programming Prize worldwide (FLL is a global robotic competition hold by
First and Lego). Finally, I found Beijing No.4 High School Robotic Club in my sophomore year and
the club remains to be one of the most popular clubs after four years.
Lego robots were the most important part of my adolescence life. However, when I stood on the
podium to accept the grand prize, I felt confused and lost. In the FLL competition field, we used
robots to help refugees, solve neurons puzzles, and even explore Mars. But we did not actually help or
change anyone s life: every exciting mission was done within the competition field. Those refugees
were still suffering; those

Vietnam should be a place to set your foot in. Each nation inherited a beauty of its own, every outfit
they wear matching their customs, their aesthetic conceptions and the area of residence. Costumes are

The Petroleum Industry In Odessa, Texas
The purpose of this research is to identify the impact of the petroleum industry on Odessa, Texas
during the 20th century. The main objective of this research is to explain how the massive growth of
the petroleum industry in Odessa came about and the social changes that had occurred as a result of
the thriving oil industry. Beginning in North Texas, the boom then spread to West Texas when the
United States became desperate for oil during and after World War I and II. This research drew upon
primary and secondary sources such as oral interviews, memoirs, articles and books from the local
University library. Upon examination of these sources it becomes clear that the discovery of oil in

There were previously no pipelines or permanent ways to transport the oil to the markets from the
Permian Basin. When the Texas and Pacific Railway was placed in service in 1881 from Fort Worth to
El Paso, Odessa s economy changed. When the Texas and Pacific Railway was finally operational in
Midland, it boosted Midland to become the oil business headquarter of the Midland/Odessa area.
Midland, Texas was the midway point between Fort Worth and El Paso, hence the name Midland .
This midway point made Midland the perfect place for a railway stop during the establishment of the
railway. Soon after the Texas and Pacific Railway was active and Midland became an oil bustling
business town with pump jacks littering the outskirts of the town. Midland then became organized by
its own county legislator in 1885. Oil businesses needed a place for supplies and oil gusher production
to be stored until transportation however, the location needed to be outside of town but not far enough
away where it would be a burden to retrieve. That is what made Odessa the perfect place to store
supplies as Midland was roughly forty miles away. Odessa merely existed in name until it became
organized in 1891 as a supply center for many of the oil businesses located in Midland. The Texas and

There are major differences in the world, such as the disparity between a solid and a liquid. But there
are also alterations that are subtle that often go unnoticed. Such as the difference between someone
who is hurting on the inside and someone who is not, the contrasts that people usually do not want
others to notice or people often miss. But what about the differences that are so obvious but people are
oblivious towards? Such as the differences between males and females; which consists of a very large

perhaps because public confidence is key to the construction of masculine identity (Fazackerley 8).
This piece of information can be eye opening for some, because there are males that we know that act

Transition To Total War
Total war breaks down the line separating combatants and non combatants through a series of
ideological and social justifications that allowed for barbaric acts to be committed. A war becomes
total when the nation itself must dedicate every facet of its existence as a state to the war effort. The
general population being brought into the war effort brings to question their innocence, thus making
them targets for the enemy. The transition from a small scale war into a total war is a gradual process,
as adjusting a nation s economy and society to feed the war is a long and difficult process.
The transition to total war depends mainly on the length of the war and the number of casualties. A
short war would not require the kind of resources and civilian support that an expansive war would
require. The Great War is often cited as being the first total war, and that is clear through the
population s view of the war as well as the soldier s. A total war can only happen if nationalism and
patriotism are high and on nearly all fronts nationalism is what rooted the soldiers in the trenches and
gave them the determination. Nationalism also gave the non combatants on the home front a reason to
support the war in other ways.

William Ury s Take On Peace And Conflict Studies
William Ury s take on peace and conflict studies includes using the ten roles to support and create the
Third Side. Each of the roles has a specific job in promoting peace and interrupting conflict. Together
the roles will help end conflict in the world if used correctly, Reading through Ury s book, I was able
to make many connections to what we learned in class. The Third Side supports the change for peace
we need to see in this role, and we will all find ourselves in one of the ten roles. The Third Side
applies to this class and will make a change in the future. The first three roles focus on conflict
prevention. These roles look to address the root of conflict and lay down the foundation for peaceful
conflict resolution. The first role is the Provider, who enables people to meet their needs which
include food, safety, identity, and freedom. At the beginning of the semester, we read The Dynamics of
Conflict Resolution by Bernard Mayer. Mayer writes that at the center of conflict is human needs.
Mayer also points out, Conflict cannot be transformed or settled unless these needs are addressed in
some way . The role of the Provider focuses on addressing these needs and enabling others to
recognize and meet their own. Mayer believes the needs are based in five forces that are the sources of
conflict. The five forces are communication, emotions, history, structure, and value. With
communication, humans are unable to perfectly communicate. The Provider knows people want to

Discuss the origin and significance of diversity within and between species using examples from a
named Eukaryote taxonomic group of your choice.
Introduction Diversity within and between species depends on various evolutionary processes and can
be traced to some sort of genetically altering event, whether it be a mutation, physical isolation,
inbreeding depression etc. This essay seeks to analyze the origins and significance of diversity within
the taxonomic group of lagomorpha, analyzing the diversity both within and between species.
Origin of diversity within species
Inbreeding depression occurs when species inbreed to a point where the overall fitness of the species
decreases. Slate and Pemberton studied how inbreeding resulted in a reduced heterozygosity affected
the sperm of wild rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus, across the United Kingdom; they considered 112
individuals as well as populations (2006). The study found an important relationship: with a reduced
heterozygosity, the production of normal sperm was also reduced (Slate and Pemberton, 2006). It is
important to note; this relationship was found amongst individuals not entire populations (Slate and
Pemberton, 2006). The study examined a loci region known to cause inbreeding depression for the
data (Slate and Pemberton, 2006). Figure 1 Relationship between the proportion of abnormal sperm

During the past six decades, the idea of the American family has shifted dramatically. The notion of
the traditional family is typically defined as two heterosexual parents in their first marriage with one

According to PewResearch , in the 1960 s 73% of all American children lived within traditional
families compared with 61% in the 1980 s and only 46% in 2013(Livingston, 2014). Increases in

travel easy, because all they had to do was follow the river home, and they would rarely get lost.
Another positive of the settlement near running waters was the abundant supply of fish year round.
The general hunting area was located on the highlands away from the water. These techniques were
not a secret, many tribes used this style of hunting and gathering. Typically, the villages that were
permanent were occupied by the members of a family or band that lived in houses built of cedar
timbers and planks. Villages have several buildings and housing options to make it unique. Usually
there was a long house used for communal purposes and sheds used for either sleeping or storage. If
there was a married couple, they received their own house to live in with their families as well. Near
hunting areas, shelter was no where near as permanent, and housing was a lot less elaborate,

herself as a victim of the demands that the weak be attractive. But the truth is that the abuse and

Challenges of Development in Sumer and Egypt Essay
An analysis of the two civilizations, Sumer and Egypt reveals one challenge facing human social
development: geography and environmental features tend to shape the patterns of civilizations.
Although the civilization of Sumer was prosperous and powerful, its geographical features ultimately
weakened Sumer, exposing its vulnerability to invasion by neighboring civilizations. Egypt was
similar to Mesopotamian civilizations in many ways, but Egypt s distinct differences led to a

Military was a strong aspect since Sumer had no known natural barriers. The economy used crops as a
form of money, as well as trade being important since Sumer had little natural resources.
To fully utilize natural resources, the Sumerians created many inventions that lead to evolutionary
advancements with technology. Bronze weapons were replaced with Iron, the invention of the plow
and eventual domestication of animals for agricultural purposes, and the sailboat, which was used as a
mode of transportation for the trade of goods among neighboring civilizations. Among the most
important inventions was the use of simple clay, the foundation of an organized communication

the Sumerians, despite harsh geographical circumstances, gave way as an influential role for growth
and development in other civilizations such as Egypt with the invention of hieroglyphics, along the

Similar to Sumer, Egypt was referred to as a river valley civilization. Egypt was divided into two

Analysis Of The Film Sankofa
Sankofa is an Ankan word which means, We must go back and reclaim our past in order to move
forward ( Diop, 2014). The film Sankofa was produced in the year 1993 in Ghana directed by Haile
Gerima. It is based on the Atlantic slave trade. It is the story slavery from the point of view of
Africans. In the film, all characters represent an element of African American culture (Gerima, 1993).
It also shows the traditional racial scale with the whites at the top followed by Half castes in the
middle and blacks at the bottom.
The film is the story of Mona, who is an African American woman who is brought back to Africa and
finds herself as a slave on the Lafayette sugarcane plantation (Gerima, 1993). In a previous life, she
was born on the sugar farm and named Shola. She was caught and sold and transported as a slave in
North America. This brings the interplay between the African American identity on one side and the
other African identity. The film achieves this through reconstructing the past and history and also
through the conception of blackness and race.
By looking keenly at the main characters in the movie, one can see the mixed racial architecture that
prevailed and that still exists to some extent in the American society. The first character in the film,
Shango, is a maroon slave who was brought to the Lafayette sugar plantation from West Indies. He is
key figure among the slaves in the plantation and also the leader of the rebellion. Shola, the narrator, is

Define corporate responsibility (CSR). Describe the benefits. Why do some executives support CSR

killing of 39 community members, mostly women and children, in a search for the guerrilla leader
Ronny Brunswijk. However taking the customary laws, usage, values and mores in consideration the
term traditional territories does not only refer to a particular village site, but also to the areas
according to the N Djuka customary law which reaches to the upper Tapanahony river in the district of
Sipaliwini. Unfortunately, the Inter American Court of Human Rights did not include the N Djuka
community members living in other villages rather than Moiwana and its members in her judgment.
On the other hand community members of Moiwana living in French Guiana were also taken in
consideration by the judgment. In August 2005 the government of Suriname was ordered to pay 13
million USD to 130 survivors and to establish a community fund (1.2 million USD) to enhance the
development of Moiwana (Sloover 2005).
The non compensated group or the left out group is in this case the communities who did not find
justice yet after the maltreatment and killings of community members in the earlier mentioned
guerrilla war. Even though some of the livelihoods were separated from each other and were lived by
one or two families whose human rights had been violated, similar Judgments as the Moiwana case
can be applied to the group on

Social Attitudes Toward Vietnam Veterans Essay
Social Attitudes Toward Vietnam Veterans
I have always been interested in the Vietnam War and the results of the longest war in America.
Therefore, I have decided to examine the social attitudes toward Vietnam veterans. Since I feel so
passionately about the way that Vietnam veterans are viewed, the purpose of my paper is to inform
others about the way that the veterans have been criticized and misrepresented. Personally, I hope to
gain a further understanding of the attitudes and views towards Vietnam veterans, especially since my
father is a veteran. After reading my paper, I hope that my audience will walk away with more respect
and reverence for those that fought in the Vietnam War and gave their lives for their country. My ...

For example, many of the soldiers did meet on Parris Island for training and often passed the hash pipe
and played [their] Doors tapes while in Southeast Asia. Although this ballad may not be the most
appropriate source for my paper, it was still beneficial to examine since it brought out strong emotions
in me about the Vietnam War and has made me even more interested in the subject.
An interesting book I discovered in the library, which is appropriate in regards to this class, is titled
American Rhetoric and the Vietnam War. The author writes that Vietnam was America s longest and
most controversial war. Thus he adds, Public controversy gives rise to public rhetoric as surely as the
sparks fly upward, and this may help to explain why the Vietnam War was the stimulus for so much
rhetoric, with so much passion, by so many people, for so many years (Gustainis xv). The author has
devoted sections of the book to rhetoric in support of the war, rhetoric opposed to the war, and some
portrayals of the war that were presented to the nation through the mass media.
Another book that I have discovered is from a different viewpoint and is perhaps more effective. The
book, Homecoming, is a history, in the veterans own words, of what it was like to return to the United
States after the most controversial war in the nation s history. This book embodies both ethos and
pathos since it does not

Lab Report on Paper Towels
Which Paper Towel is Stronger and
Has More Absorbency?
Decorator or Sparkle?
Introduction
Paper towels are made from softwood trees which contain long fibers. The tree goes thru several
processes before it is actually turned into a paper towel. The paper towel is made from pulp in which
the water is removed and the fibers then bond into sheets. Also, resin is added to the process to give
the paper towel strength (Union). Several layers are then put together with adhesive and then formed
into a paper towel (Choudhury). Some paper towels are embossed to form air pockets which help to
absorb more liquid and help to add more strength (Union).
The purpose of this experiment is to find out which brand of paper towel, Decorator or ... Show more

The process was then repeated for the second brand of paper towel.
The independent variable for the experiment was the paper towels. The dependent variable was the
absorbency and strength. The constants for the experiment were the size of the paper towels that were
used, the amount of water, the size of the beaker, the size of the cylinder and the amount of the weight.
Results
The results of the experiment for the test of strength were that the Sparkle brand proved to be the
strongest. The average amount that the paper towel would hold before ripping was 583.6 g, which was
159.2 g more than the Decorator brand held. The Decorator brand only held 424.4 g before it ripped.
The results of the experiment for the test of absorbency were that the Sparkle brand proved to be the
most absorbent. The average amount of liquid that the Sparkle brand paper towel held was 17.4 mL,
which was 4.6 mL more than the Decorator brand held. The Decorator brand only held 12.8 of liquid.

Examples Of The Affiliate Model
2.4.4.4. The Affiliate Model
This model consists in selling product(s) or service(s) not created by the company, generating revenue
through a commission. To give some examples to understand how the model works: Airbnb the
company which connects customers and providers of places in different cities worldwide, doesn t sell
any product or service, their business consists in connecting people and getting a commission for the
usage of their website to enable this relation. Skyscanner gives the customer multiple options to book
an airplane ticket from different Airlines, so basically they don t have an own product/service although
they do work based on commissions with the airlines to promote and display their ticket prices for
specific destinations.
The idea would be to charge a commission value for each sale (cost per acquisition), as a broker (as
Ebay does) or charge per click (as Skyscanner does). When the cost per acquisition is used, the
company charges when a user buys directly following the advertisement place in the webpage, at the
same time pay per click charges the company each time a potential ... Show more content on

The app store application model
The idea behind the app store application model is to offer content exclusively for smartphones and
tablets, this content is commonly known as an application (App). The news are filled with successful
cases of this model application like the artillery combat game developed by Ethan Nicholas, which
gathered $600.000 in one month making its way to the first place in the ranking in the App Store.
Other companies had become rich with the app model leading to a digital boom in the related industry.
(Rickman, 2012).
Although most of the apps are usually associated with games, the apps world offers a wide variety of
apps that suit several different functions, like the particular example of the app created by the Japanese
company Sea s Garden which is able to keep mosquitoes away with a produced high frequency sound.

  • 2. Candide Paper Candide is a fictional satire of the optimism many philosophers had for life in general during the mid 1700 s written in response to Alexander Pope s An Essay on Man. Written by Voltaire, the literary alias of Francois Marie Arouet, the satire covers religion, the wealthy, love, why people thought natural disasters occurred and especially, philosophy. The novel even goes on to make fun of the art of literature by giving ridiculous chapter headings. Just about everything Voltaire put into Candide is designed to question and satirize real world injustices. In effect Candide is the 18th century equivalent of a modern day sitcom (Shmoop). Just as modern day sitcoms expose the injustices of the world in an overly exaggerated and humorous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example of the sarcasm on this subject is found in the scene where Candide is about to save an Anabaptist who had just fallen into a heavy seas. This Anabaptist was responsible for nursing both Candide and Dr. Pangloss, a philosopher back to health. He had fallen into the sea as a result of rescuing a falling sailor. When Candide got ready to go in after the Anabaptist but Dr. Pangloss stopped him telling him that the water was there put there for the purpose of drowning the Anabaptist. Scenes like this appear and play out so quickly the audience is left asking themselves, Did that really just happen? The scene is so ludicrous that nobody can take it seriously and therefore it is perceived as a joke. By creating such a silly way in which philosophy is used, Voltaire gives the audience a reason to laugh at would otherwise be thought of as a serious subject. In addition to Philosophy, Voltaire also ridicules complacency throughout the entirety of his novel. Complacency is shown as a product of the philosophical ideas portrayed through Candide and in many scenes is the only reason that things are allowed to go from bad to worse. It is displayed while the Anabaptist is drowning and again during the earthquake is Lisbon. During this scene, Candide is begging for help after being hit in the head by a piece of a building and buried by rubble. However, Dr. Pangloss would rather philosophize about why an ... Bailey was purposefully agitating Holliday during a card game, which would end with Bailey pulling a gun on Holliday. Knowing it was of good reason, Holliday did not run, and would later be arrested. This caused a group of people to form to try and get revenge on Holliday, something Kate saw coming. • 4. Deviance Essay Deviance is what is considered a violation of cultural norms, and is something that is frowned upon due to social norms. Society attempts to regulate people s thoughts and behaviors for social control. There is a huge connection between the two because deviance varies with cultural norms, people become deviant when others define them as such and both norms and the definition given involve social power. Lets take the example of Brent Staple; new to New York, and was a graduate student who had been an avid nightwalker. Mr. Staples became painfully aware that society had seen him as deviant, because when they looked at him all they saw was a black man wearing bulky clothes late at night walking around ready to attack someone. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So to sum that all up categories, labels and boundary lines are constructed so that social groups can maintain a norm and they believe allows for a functioning society. You have racially motivated deviant boundary lines so that social groups can segregate themselves from others to have power over each other. So why do social groups label and categorize people as deviant based off of race? Labeling someone as deviant because of race is away for society to try and strengthening themselves as racially segregated groups. For example if a group of whites label a group of blacks as outcasts or deviants it gives them social control and power. Another reason why social groups construct boundary lines, labels and categorizes is because that is their way of keeping society functioning and keeping people within the norms of what we know as normal and abnormal. If society cannot outcast people then we have no hierarchy and no power. With Brent Staples he was feeling as an outsider, seeing fear from people because of his race, his gender, his clothing as well as the fact he was out late walking around. In my opinion society is taking away his power of freedom to be comfortable doing what many other people were doing at night walking around, they took away his power to feel whole as an individual. All of these factors gave the people around him the idea that he was something to be feared. It made him feel that he needed to change, to conform to society so he would not be ... Someone who wasn t afraid was Amelia Earhart. She did something no one else had done or attempted to do before. Amelia Earhart, daring and outgoing from the start of her life, achieved many things, which is why she should be remembered because, indeed, flying is what ended her life. Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1898, in Atchison, Kansas. Around 1907, her whole family moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Amelia was a full out tomboy during her whole childhood. She once slid a sled off a barn roof, calling it a roller coaster. She also played all the sports that, normally, only boys played like football and basketball. During the summer of 1907, Amelia s dad, Edwin, took her and her sister, Muriel, to the Des Moines State Fair. Edwin was really attracted to the model airplane at the fair. On the other hand, Muriel and Amelia, surprisingly, were unamused. They just thought the plane was boring. (Lardner, 205 207). In 1917, Amelia and her mother took a trip to Toronto, Canada, even though, there was a war happening. Amelia saw wounded soldiers on her left and right. She knew she had to help in some way. The 1957 movie, 12 Angry Men is a great example of the minority influence process, the one change the beliefs of the other eleven. 12 Angry Men is a jury group that decides if the defendant is guilty or not guilty of murder and sending the defendant to the Electric Chair. During deliberation, prejudice, persuasion, conformity and cognitive heuristics, all played a role in the interaction of the group and the final decision to equate the defendant. Persuasion Henry Fonda, plays the role of juror number eight, who from the beginning keeps his conviction that the defendant is not guilty due to reasonable doubt. Fonda uses arguments and reasoning to convince the other jurors to deliver a not guilty verdict. For each witness testimony, Fonda was able to raise doubt, like the L train causing enough noise that the elderly neighbor would be unable to hear the father and son argue. As more jurors, changed their verdict to not guilty, they took on the role as persuader, for example, juror number nine placed doubt on the female neighbor to be able to see the murder because of it was doubtful she was wearing her glasses. One by one, Fonda was able to convince the others to admit there was reasonable doubt. Whether it be while you are walking down the street, shopping at the supermarket, or even in the safety of your own home enjoying some tv in your down time. Advertising, whether it be big or small is everywhere; and in fact there are many issues with it. Advertising that promotes a service or product in a deceptive way is highly unethical. This is because it doesn t provide the customer with enough information that they need in order to make a good, educated decision. And on another note, advertising is manipulative because of the way it promotes consumption at such a large scale. Some of the main reasons for advertising being dishonest are because it displays false savings, it exhibits unnecessary upselling and possibly most importantly, it fuel s wasteful consumerism. The significance of this problem, comes in the form of the large sums of money people waste on products they don t need and once purchased, realise they don t want. Frankly it is just too overt to look past. A way that advertising is deceptive is by showing false savings. Advertising a shocking price cut is a common marketing tactic, but some businesses inflate their prices beforehand just so they can advertise the sizable price cut. In effect, the customer does not receive a good deal because the discount reflects virtual, not actual, savings. Memory Distortion Research Paper INTRODUCTION Over three decades of research on memory distortion leaves no doubt that memory can be altered with the use of suggestive techniques (Loftus Pickrell, 1995). Such suggestive memory manipulation procedures strongly encourage people to recall past happenings and have repeatedly been used to create reccollections of events that never took place (Lynn, Lock, Loftus, Krackow Lilienfeld, 2003). Elizabeth Loftus pioneered research into the effects of misleading suggestive information on memory, (Loftus, 1979; Loftus, Miller Burns, 1978, Wells Loftus 1984) and since, , researchers have successfully implanted memories of a wide variety of ficticious events through use of suggestive questions and statements; eg that individuals spilled punch at a wedding (Hyman, Husband Billings, 1995), that they broke a window with their hand (Garry, Manning, Loftus Sherman, 1996; Heaps Nash, 1999), or that they got lost before age 3 (Mazzoni, Loftus, Seitz Lynn, 1999), amongst many others. Designing Customizable And Programmable Robots Essay I still freshly remember that, as a six years old little boy, I dreamed to be a wizard because nothing is more fantastic than creating objects with your own abilities. At the age of eight, I had a taste of dream coming true: my parents bought me a Lego Robotic Command eXplorers (a robot kit that contains software and hardware to create customizable and programmable robots). Transition To Total War Total war breaks down the line separating combatants and non combatants through a series of ideological and social justifications that allowed for barbaric acts to be committed. A war becomes total when the nation itself must dedicate every facet of its existence as a state to the war effort. The Third Side supports the change for peace we need to see in this role, and we will all find ourselves in one of the ten roles. The Third Side applies to this class and will make a change in the future. The first three roles focus on conflict prevention. These roles look to address the root of conflict and lay down the foundation for peaceful conflict resolution. The first role is the Provider, who enables people to meet their needs which include food, safety, identity, and freedom. At the beginning of the semester, we read The Dynamics of Conflict Resolution by Bernard Mayer. Mayer writes that at the center of conflict is human needs. Since I feel so passionately about the way that Vietnam veterans are viewed, the purpose of my paper is to inform others about the way that the veterans have been criticized and misrepresented. Personally, I hope to gain a further understanding of the attitudes and views towards Vietnam veterans, especially since my father is a veteran. After reading my paper, I hope that my audience will walk away with more respect and reverence for those that fought in the Vietnam War and gave their lives for their country. My ... For example, many of the soldiers did meet on Parris Island for training and often passed the hash pipe and played [their] Doors tapes while in Southeast Asia. Although this ballad may not be the most appropriate source for my paper, it was still beneficial to examine since it brought out strong emotions in me about the Vietnam War and has made me even more interested in the subject. An interesting book I discovered in the library, which is appropriate in regards to this class, is titled American Rhetoric and the Vietnam War. The author writes that Vietnam was America s longest and most controversial war. Thus he adds, Public controversy gives rise to public rhetoric as surely as the sparks fly upward, and this may help to explain why the Vietnam War was the stimulus for so much rhetoric, with so much passion, by so many people, for so many years (Gustainis xv). The author has devoted sections of the book to rhetoric in support of the war, rhetoric opposed to the war, and some portrayals of the war that were presented to the nation through the mass media. Another book that I have discovered is from a different viewpoint and is perhaps more effective. The book, Homecoming, is a history, in the veterans own words, of what it was like to return to the United States after the most controversial war in the nation s history. This book embodies both ethos and pathos since it does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Lab Report on Paper Towels Which Paper Towel is Stronger and Has More Absorbency? Decorator or Sparkle? Introduction Paper towels are made from softwood trees which contain long fibers. The tree goes thru several processes before it is actually turned into a paper towel. The paper towel is made from pulp in which the water is removed and the fibers then bond into sheets. Also, resin is added to the process to give the paper towel strength (Union). Several layers are then put together with adhesive and then formed into a paper towel (Choudhury). Some paper towels are embossed to form air pockets which help to absorb more liquid and help to add more strength (Union). The purpose of this experiment is to find out which brand of paper towel, Decorator or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The process was then repeated for the second brand of paper towel. The independent variable for the experiment was the paper towels. The dependent variable was the absorbency and strength. The constants for the experiment were the size of the paper towels that were used, the amount of water, the size of the beaker, the size of the cylinder and the amount of the weight. Results The results of the experiment for the test of strength were that the Sparkle brand proved to be the strongest. The average amount that the paper towel would hold before ripping was 583.6 g, which was 159.2 g more than the Decorator brand held. The Decorator brand only held 424.4 g before it ripped. The results of the experiment for the test of absorbency were that the Sparkle brand proved to be the most absorbent. The average amount of liquid that the Sparkle brand paper towel held was 17.4 mL, which was 4.6 mL more than the Decorator brand held. The Decorator brand only held 12.8 of liquid. • 44. Examples Of The Affiliate Model 2.4.4.4. The Affiliate Model This model consists in selling product(s) or service(s) not created by the company, generating revenue through a commission. To give some examples to understand how the model works: Airbnb the company which connects customers and providers of places in different cities worldwide, doesn t sell any product or service, their business consists in connecting people and getting a commission for the usage of their website to enable this relation. Skyscanner gives the customer multiple options to book an airplane ticket from different Airlines, so basically they don t have an own product/service although they do work based on commissions with the airlines to promote and display their ticket prices for specific destinations. The idea would be to charge a commission value for each sale (cost per acquisition), as a broker (as Ebay does) or charge per click (as Skyscanner does). When the cost per acquisition is used, the company charges when a user buys directly following the advertisement place in the webpage, at the same time pay per click charges the company each time a potential ... The news are filled with successful cases of this model application like the artillery combat game developed by Ethan Nicholas, which gathered $600.000 in one month making its way to the first place in the ranking in the App Store. Other companies had become rich with the app model leading to a digital boom in the related industry. (Rickman, 2012).
