Understanding The House Made of Dawn by Scott Momaday Essay
Understanding The House Made of Dawn by Scott Momaday
In 1969, N. Scott Momaday became the first Native American to win the Pulitzer Prize in the area of
Letters, Drama, and Music for best Fiction. As Schubnell relates in N. Scott Momaday: The Cultural
and Literary Background, Momaday initially could not believe that he had won a prize for a work that
began as a poem (93). Schubnell cites one juror who explains his reasoning for selecting House Made
of Dawn as being the work s eloquence and intensity of feeling, its freshness of vision and subject,
[and] its immediacy of theme (93). For these reasons and many more, House Made of Dawn hailed the
arrival on the American literary scene of a matured, sophisticated ... Show more content on

In 1946, his family moved to Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico, the place that would later become the
setting for House Made of Dawn. Here, Momaday saw swift changes roll through the tribal village,
such as: an exploding population, the infiltration of technology and the culture of Anglo America, as
well as alcoholism and crime. Momaday also witnessed the return of World War IIs soldiers, and the
confusion and despair that accompanied them (Schubnell, 19). This period of Jemez s history would
return years later in Momaday s novel, for Abel, the protagonist, is a veteran of WWII, and he, like the
soldiers of Momaday s memories, is confused and desperate. Abel also turns to alcohol for relief.
Momaday s experiences would also imprint upon his mind that only a sense of self which embraced
both Indian and non Anglican realities could lead to a worthwhile future (Schubnell, 20). Owens
suggest that it is this search for self, and a sense of identity, that lead him to write. Momaday, himself
describes identity in terms of imagination:
We are what we imagine. Our very existence consists in our imagination of ourselves. Our best destiny
is to imagine, at least, completely, who and what, and that we are. The greatest tragedy that can befall
us is to go unimagined (Owens, 93).
In an interview with Schubnell, Momaday says:

Abstract
The spotted owl was seen as a symbol of all things environmental during the late 1980 s and early
1990 s. The logging industry was well on its way to destroying most of the old growth forests of the
Pacific Northwest. Environmentalists swarmed the area, sabotaging logging efforts and calling ...

Many people have wondered why this insignificant owl gets more press than the decimation of salmon
streams nationwide, when it would have no economic impact on our society as a whole.
The logging industry has made millions of dollars from the harvesting of old growth lumber over the
past several decades. Recently, they have become more responsible about clear cut logging. Harvested
forests are often replanted to provide for future wildlife habitat and logging efforts. However, this
doesn t help the spotted owl. It needs old growth forests with their tangle of massive trees and thick
dense brush. The logging industry is threatened by this small owl. Thousands of jobs have been lost.
Families are starving. Lumber prices have skyrocketed.
So this sets up a struggle. Loggers need the lumber for economic prosperity. Environmentalists want
to protect this owl. How will both parties win? Can both parties win? There are many issues that arise
out of this conflict. The public needs cost efficient lumber. The loggers need their jobs. The spotted
owl needs a home.
One of the largest concerns, dealing with the spotted owl / forest industry debate, is the loss of jobs.
There were 21,000 jobs lost during the time that this debate took place (Ross, 1999). The amount of
job losses in the logging and milling industry at this time were not solely attributed to the spotted owl
controversy. The downward trend in the timber harvest

Operational Code Of Culture Essay
Culture is an operational code shared by members of a particular society, a system of shared beliefs,
values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that members of society use to cope with their world and with
one another. Members of a society share their culture; there is no culture of one , it is learned through
a process called enculturation, and changeable through social interactions between people and groups.
Culture is patterned, meaning that people in a society live and think in ways forming definite,
repeating patterns. The Arab Republic of Egypt is located within the Sahara Desert, in the northeast
corner of Africa, west of the red sea and south of the Mediterranean Sea, the country is slightly larger
than three times the size of the state of New Mexico. The Red Sea Highlands run along the coast of

Effects of Video Games on Children s Learning and Physical Health Just like any activity, there are
both positive and negative effects of children playing video games. However, the general notion is the
opposite, especially in regards to children s health. Additionally, learning environment and health are
the most important aspects of childhood. Playing video games can be helpful in classroom contexts to
aid in children s acquisition of concepts being taught. Video games can affect children s development
in terms of their cognition and physical well being. According to Annetta, Minogue, Holmes, and
Cheng (2009), the world of education has included video games as part of learning to make it more
entertaining and interesting to students. Gaming has helped to inspire many over the past few decades.
The effectiveness of video games as an educational tool is still not widely studied even though
literature on this topic is growing. As a result, the researchers studied participants levels of
engagement when playing with educational video games and their effectiveness on concept
understanding. Their research is crucial to this paper because it addresses the positive effects of video
games on children s learning process. The gaming application covers key genetic concepts that cater to
high school biology students. The study by Annetta et al. (2009) employed a posttest only design,
where the experimental group participants played a gaming application that covers key biology

The Economic Impact Of Amoebic Dysentery
There are no definitive metrics on the economic impact of amoebic dysentery. The disease mostly
afflicts children in farming communities whose source of drinking water are streams, rivers and
ponds. Knowledge of the economic cost of diarrheal diseases in the developing countries, on the other
hand, offers rough estimates of the cost of amoebic dysentery. It worth mentioning that about 40% of
the diarrheal diseases in the developing countries is attributable to amoebic dysentery according to a
paper presented at the 28th African Health Sciences Congress, Mauritius, July, 2008. A study done at a

incubation period for Amoebiasis is about 10 days, but it can range from a few days to years. Patients

systemic manifestations is rare. It presents with a sudden onset of severe bloody diarrhea, abdominal

Quantitative, Qualitative And Quantitative Methodologies
Introduction
Along with qualitative and quantitative methodologies in research, the trend of combining both
qualitative and quantitative methodologies is widely used and increasingly articulated, attached to
research practice and recognized as the third major research approach or research paradigm (Johnson,
Onwuegbuzie Turner, 2007).
As cited by Anaf and Sheppard (2007), Key in 1997 suggested the theory and meaning, qualitative and
quantitative methodologies are distinct. A qualitative methodology s focus of research is in its nature
and essence. The goal of investigation of qualitative methodology is understanding, description and
discovery. It usually involves small, non random, and theoretical population. Data collection takes into
account researcher as the primary instrument, and sometimes involve interviews and observations. The
mode analysis of qualitative method is inductive which leads to findings that are comprehensive and
holistic.
It was also claimed that a quantitative method s focus of research usually involves how many or the
quantity. The goal of investigation of a quantitative method is usually about prediction, control and
confirmation. It usually involves large, random and representative sample. Data collection that are
usually used are inanimate instruments, surveys and questionnaires. The mode of analysis is usually
deductive and lead to a precise and reductionist way of findings as cited by Anaf and Sheppard (2007).

Religion Traditions Religious traditions play a huge role with humans and their beliefs of who controls
the world. Religion is believed to have many different meanings to different people. The definition of
religion varies but the common definition is people in an organization that to worship together and
have the same beliefs. It is also viewed a system of belief that worships a God or gods, prayer, and
moral code. In this paper, you will read explanation of how religious traditions describe and encourage
relationships, the key characteristics of religion, and the conflict issues in the study of religion
(Molloy, 2010).

Christians use churches as their sacred place to worship God, the Creator. Worship day is mostly on
Sundays. Other religions like Buddhism, believe their sacred place to be eternal, which means there is
no beginning or end. Buddhists uses temples to worship. The Buddhist temples were created to
symbolize the five elements of Buddhism. The elements are air, water, fire, earth, and wisdom. The
sacred space or place defines peace within a religion (Molloy, 2010).
A relationship with each other is the male and female roles of religion. The gender is used to define a
person and is a critical part of being human. What is considered to be male or female gives another
basis for comparing religions. The dominate role of many religions are considered to be a male
imagery.
The key characteristics of religion are made up of eight elements. The belief system is a worldview of
several beliefs. The community is a shared belief system where ideals are praised in a group setting.
Central myths are stories retold or reenacted through religious beliefs. Rituals are beliefs that are
enacted and made real through ceremonies. Ethics are rules and social guidelines of human behavior
from supernatural realm. Characteristic emotional experiences are emotions of guilt, mystery, awe,
conversion, devotion and rebirth, that deal with religion. Material expression is

Robert E. Lee Essay
Robert E. Lee
Throughout history, there have been people whose names and faces have become synonymous with
the time periods in which they lived. For example, Julius Caesar is synonymous with the late Roman
Republic and George Washington is synonymous with the American Revolution. Just like these two
men, the name Robert E. Lee has become synonymous with the American Civil War. Not only did Lee
rise to become the most important and recognizable person in the Southern Confederacy, but his honor
and virtuous acts during and after the war made him a hero to modern day Americans. Even though he
fought for what many consider the morally erroneous side of the war, the virtues of his character have
made him a figure in American history ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite the mistakes his father and brother made, Lee managed to grow learning the ways of a true
Southern gentleman. The departure of his father and two older half brothers made Lee the man of the
house at an early age. His mother, Ann Carter, raised Lee in modest circumstances and helped him to
learn standard of conduct. Lee grew up in modest conditions, and though he received the normal
education for someone of his class, he had to earn his own living and didn t live the easy going
plantation life that most members of his family did. Since his mother did not have sufficient cash to
send Lee to go to college, he chose instead to enter West Point military and academy. He entered in
1825 at the age of 18. At West Point Lee excelled tremendously. He finished second in his class and
didn t receive one demerit during his four years there (A feat that has yet to be repeated since then).
Lee entered Engineer Corps after graduation where he was employed to build and maintain military
installations and assist the Federal Government in the enormous work of providing internal
improvements in order to settle border disputes on the frontier lands.
Lee married Mary Custis in July of 1831. Mary Custis was the daughter of Mary Fitzhugh Custis and
George Washington Custis, who was the adopted son of George Washington. Lee became the heir to
Washington although the marriage did not bring Lee any financial benefits until Mary s father died in
1857. Until then, he

Superman Cannot Always Save The Day
Superman Cannot Always Save the Day According to the results of standardized tests across America,
public schooling systems are not always efficient in educating their students to their fullest capability.
When we think about corruption in public schools, we think about schools in lower income areas such
as Chicago Heights or any other major cities that are in the rougher areas of the city. The documentary
focuses on those stereotypical schools for their setting. In the film Waiting for Superman created by
Davis Guggenheim, the documentary exposes the overall fraudulency of the public school systems
across the United States and uncovers the actual ways that certain teachers act and how they partake in
educating their students. The interactive use of pop culture animations and silence in the documentary
illustrates the discussion of the school s corruption in the documentary for the audience to better
understand. Not only does the documentary target the underperforming public schools, it digs deeper
into the actual teachers within the failing districts. Undetermined teachers are one of the major causes
of a failing school. Without properly educated students, the test standards are not met, which means
insufficient funds towards that district. Consequently, the teachers are not driven thanks to tenure they
can sit back, relax, and collect their paycheck without doing efficient work. In Waiting for Superman,

Introduction to Porter s five forces. Michael Porter s five forces model is in light of the comprehension
that a corporate philosophy should meet the opportunities and dangers in the affiliation s external
surroundings. Especially, forceful strategy should base on a cognizance of industry structures and the
way they change. The Porter s Five Forces model is an outside looking in forte unit technique
contraption that is used to make an examination of the captivating quality or estimation of an industry
structure. The Competitive Forces examination is made by the ID of 5 noteworthy centered forces:
The section of contenders (how straightforward or troublesome is it for new members to start to fight,
which limits do exist) The danger of substitutes (how straightforward can our thing or organization be

Perfume As A Critique Of Perfume
An Analysis of Perfume as a Critique of Religion
Perfume by Patrick Süskind follows Jean Baptiste Grenouille through an incredible journey of
survival, perseverance, and ascension to godlike power. It, being set during the Enlightenment, depicts
a time where people let curiosity reign and science flourish. Nevertheless, although people were
becoming more scientific in their thought, religion was still a part of people s lives. The presence of
religious elements in the novel, however, serves to be more than just a descriptive tool to flesh out the
world of the novel. Because of the biblical parallels that present Grenouille as a messiah like figure,
and also further comments on religion through narration, the reader is often pushed to consider the
nature of faith and the faithful. In effect, Süskind uses Grenouille and the world of Perfume to
examine and critique the functions and foundations of worshipping a god.
One way the novel does so is by satirizing religion using sexual elements. In all major religions,
sexuality is far removed from everything holy. This is especially true for Christian monks like Father
Terrier. However, when Jeanne Bussie goes to him to give Grenouille back, he breathes in the scent of
milk and cheesy wool exuded by the wet nurse (8) and finds it a pleasant aroma (8). Church
representatives have pledged abstinence and are essentially the prime exemplar of sexual neutrality
and purity, yet Father Terrier inhales the wet nurse s scent an act

Essay on Racism in Disney Films
What images come to mind as one reflects upon his or her childhood? Playgrounds, blackboards, and
soccer balls may be among the fondest of memories. Yet, for many, mermaids swim their thoughts,
princesses get swept off their feet, and lions roar to their royal place in the animal kingdom. Disney
films have captivated the American culture for years and have become a pivotal part of popular culture
as well as a form of education. However, these films have devoured the youth of America and, in the
process; have perpetuated an institutionally racist society based on harsh stereotypes. Minorities are
often underrepresented, and even completely left out, of many Disney films such as Dumbo (1941),

According to Carl Hiaasen, The secret weapon is trust. Disney is the most trusted brand name in the
history of marketing. It hooks us when we re little and never lets go; this unshakeable faith that Disney
is the best at knowing what s best. (13) It is time that this myth be shattered. As far back as 1946,
racial stereotyping of African Americans has been evident in Disney films. For instance, in the
American classic Dumbo, the crows depict the typical southern African American with a slow pattern
of speech. In Jungle Book (1967) the monkeys with African American voices are jiving in a crazy
manner because they will never be real men and will always be animals. One of the most tragic
examples of this racism can be seen in the movie Tarzan. In the original making of the movie, the
white man comes to the rescue and tames all of the animals and natives. However, in the new Disney
version of Tarzan (1999), the blacks that obviously inhabit Africa were completely eliminated and
replaced by gorillas with African American voices. African American children whom view these films
have no choice but to resort to relating to these often unintelligent, inferior animals because that is
where they hear themselves. In Mickey Mouse Monopoly, children were asked if they could think of
any black characters in Disney films, sadly they came up short of a single one. It

The Learning Theories And Our Lives
The Learning Theories and Our Lives We start our lives and we immediately start to develop into the
person we become today. Obviously most of us would not start by learning calculus at two years old,
or care about what grades we are getting in first grade, but the process of learning starts right away.
This learning processes plays a significant role in developing us. There are three main learning
theories we look at. Observational, Classical Conditioning, and Operant Conditioning. Observational
learning occurs through observing the behaviors of others. This includes things like memorizing and
reproducing things that someone showed you or you saw done. Classical Conditioning is when things
happen multiple times and you learn a response to this. For example, the first time you spoke out in
class in elementary school, you were not conditioned yet not to. The response to this might be being
told to be quiet or a time out. You then are conditioned that if you talk, you will get in trouble. Then
you have Operant Conditioning, which is behaviors that are associated with a consequence. An
example to this is doing well in a swim competition becomes associated with an award. When you
start your life you start learning by observing what you parents do. When you are young learning is
done primarily from observing what goes on around you. At this point in your life you are not
developed enough to understand consequences; or a least not to an advanced level. You observe what

Summary Of Joseph Ellis Founding Brothers
1. The idea that the United States was once a struggling and fragile nation is very challenging to grasp.
The notion is tricky to understand because of how powerful the country has been for years and years.
The founding fathers could never see just how prosperous and advanced the country would become
years later. Joseph Ellis succeeds in transporting all who read his novel, Founding Brothers, as it
realistically portrays how risky the creation of the nation was in its early years. The book truly throws

Many hold an idea that the nation was built on honesty and loyalty. It would surprise many to find out
how much Jefferson lied. Ellis is able to present Jefferson many times with bad qualities or
characteristics in his novel Founding Brothers. For instance, Jefferson would boost his image by
having a journalist write nasty articles about Adams. Shockingly enough sometimes he forgot about
the nation, and only worked for his own rise and the fall of Adams. Jefferson wrote a lot in the

Ethics Is A Theory Of Proper Moral Conduct
Shaudee Houshmand

PHIL 1
13 December 2015
Final Paper
Ethics
Ethics derives from the Greek word ethos which means character. Essentially ethics is a theory of
proper moral conduct. Essentially, in ethics one is trying to make a distinction between what is the
case between what ought to be the case. A key player in ethics is the moral agent. A moral agent is a
person that has an ability to reflect on moral issues. Moral actions conform to the law and immoral
actions do not conform to the law.
Relativism
Ethical relativist deny any objective moral values. Cultural relativism explains that in different times
and in different places people act in different ways; they acquire different values and ideas of what is
morally right and wrong. Moral relativism explains that there are no moral absolutes; everyone can do
what they please and how they want whenever they like.
James Rachels believes in cultural relativism. There are many different arguments first, Different
cultures have different moral codes, therefore there is no objective truth in morality, right and wrong
are only matters of opinion and opinions vary from culture to culture (Rachels). This means that right
and wrong are opinions and those opinions vary from cultures. This argument is not valid for cultural
relativism. Just because different cultures have different moral codes, it does not follow that there is
no objective truth for morality. Some of Rachels s arguments for moral relativism are: if

Characteristics Of Different Business Markets
1.1 Explain the characteristics of different business markets Characteristics of different business
markets include: General market description, business opportunity, market segmentation, market size
trends, competition, customer profile and business environment. Looking at the different
characteristics can help evaluate the market, this can be achieved by dividing the market into specific
segments: by geographical market: by customer type: such as industries, professions, age. Evaluate the
market size and trends by breaking the market into segments. This is often done to help assess who is
the competition and how strong it may be within its own field. 1.2 Explain the nature of interactions
between businesses within a market Business interaction can be interpreted as a communication
process that occurs between companies and which changes and transforms aspects of the resources
and activities of the involved companies and of the companies themselves. For example, the
interaction may lead to one of the companies modifying the product and service offering that it
supplies to a counterpart. It may also lead the counterpart to reorganize aspects of its operations in
order to accommodate that offering. Interaction also forms a working structure for a business network
and provides an element of stability to how different companies relate to each other within a network.
This may also be used as a means through which companies address their respective problems;
interaction may

Jane Eyre Wide Sargasso Sea Essay
Jean Rhys Wide Sargasso Sea haunts the narrative of Jane Eyre through the construction and
recognition of the uncanny. Rhys incorporates the uncanny within her rewriting of Jane Eyre through
the utilization of narrative devices and ambiguous representations of physical spaces. By rewriting
Jane Eyre, Rhys attempts to construct a history that is not only detached from the dominant world
established in Jane Eyre, but grounded within the hauntological realm of the Caribbean. The
hauntological realm in which Rhys constructs, not only provides a degree of agency within a realm of
uncertainty, but establishes a degree of restraint too.
Megan Mericle argued that both Jane Eyre (1847) and Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) suggests the
liberation of their respective female protagonist from the oppressive conventions in which they find
themselves captive (Mericle 2012, 236). While Brontë s Jane Eyre asserts the independence of Jane
Eyre to have derived through her escape from restrictive patriarchal conventions, Rhys Wide Sargasso
Sea follows an alternative narrative where it is through repression that Antoinette ... Show more

exercises this control through renaming Antoinette, Bertha (Rhys 2000, 86) and marionette (Rhys

Antoinette is physically confined within the attic, Grace Poole does not fail to mention that Antoinette

The Pros And Cons Of Framing
Framing is one of the most problematic methods of presenting information to a wide scale audience. It
has replaced flatout bias as a more subtle way to persuade audience members, thus leaving
uninformed people unable to see the whole of the information without the presenter to completely
disclose their values or beliefs. To the uninformed masses, this method removes most, if not all, hope
for a straightforward news service. While framing is just a tool used in journalism, without any
inherent evils attached to it, we still see it s abuse from all sources of news. This abuse is what makes
framing the most problematic methods of presenting information. First we should begin by defining
what framing really is. Framing is when information is presented ... Show more content on

We need to conceptualize what newsgroups actively abuse framing, trying to shift the public towards
their ideology (Davis and Kent, 2013). This requires enough people to routinely research and note
several major newsgroups. In doing so, we both eradicate the chains of framing and continue to
advance our own knowledge of what s actually going on. Yes this may seem like a bit of stretch,
however it s not completely improbable. Using the internet, sharing information can be remarkably
fast. And a committee could be set up to investigate and comment on newsgroups that abuse

Because I couldn’t stop for death by Emily Dickson and...
First of all, based on both poems, the attitude of the poets is influenced by the diction of the poems as
well as tone and mood. In Emily Dickinson s poem, in line 1, 2 Because I couldn t stop for death He
kindly stopped for me the word death delivers a positive mood as the speaker seems respect and awe
death. Moreover, death is portrayed as a phenomenon that is beyond ‎
human s control. Death has its
own control; it is something that human cannot decide themselves but only death can do stop for
human, invite them into its carriage, not vice versa. In ‎
addition, the word kindly in the line presents
calmness to the readers as death is not something that human should scare off. Besides, the word

However, in contrast to Emily s poem, the speaker undervalues death s supremacy as its power is
actually not in its own control. It is a contradictory to Emily s poem. In line 9 Thou art slave to fate,
chance, kings, and desperate men indicates death as a slave as it does what has been ordered from the
superior ones. Death takes human s life not because he is willing to do so but because he is forced to
do so. In line 10 11, And dost with poison, war and sickness... can make us sleep as well the speaker
associates death with poison, war and sickness as death is not the only factor of human s deceases
which then the speaker posts rhetorical question for death to stop being proud. Also, the usage of
rhetorical questions like in line 2 For thou art not so makes death fragile. Further, the last line in this
poem And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die points out that at the end, the only one who
dies is death itself which will be discussed in the element of Christian theology in this essay. The
ending also eventually argues that death is weak and vulnerable, not in control and that is the reason
why human should not fear death. All the arguments made by the speaker in this poem creates death
less powerful and less control of itself which illustrates a condescending tone to elucidate death s
incapability to kill. Hence, both poets; Emily Dickinson and John Donne portray death as a
phenomenon that human should not fear. But

The Pentecostal-Charismatic Movement Paper
Modern Christianity is full of several different practices. Baby dedication is the practice of Christians,
in which the parent(s) declare publicly in front of God, the church, and their family, they will lead
their child in the way God orders life to go, as well as encourage a personal relationship with God
throughout their lifetime as to never fall short of the glory of God. The baby dedication ceremony
historically began with churches who did not baptize babies (Patzia, 1984). Some believers felt it
unnecessary because God does not hold children accountable and they would go to heaven should
something occur prior to their date of accountability. The ceremony begins with the Pastor thanking
God for the blessing of the baby. Then, the parents must dedicate announce they have dedicated their

One movement in particular is the Pentecostal Charismatic Movement. Although this movement is
rooted in ancient history, the last 100 years the movement has made great strides (Molloy, 2009). The
Pentecostals have faith in the emotional backing of Christian worship. They believe the Holy Spirit
manifests through them using miraculous blessings, such as speaking in tongues (Bartos, 2015). The
first Pentecostal churches first developed in the United States during the early twentieth century;
although, churches using the Pentecostal name have been around since the later part of the nineteenth
century. The growth of the church has been significant in such a short time span and it expands

ideals have been highly influential. The number of individuals converting here and afar are

F. Scott Fitzgerald was an incredible writer. He often uses incidences from his life in his writings.
Fitzgerald fell in love with Zelda Sayre and married her. They lived all over the United States and
Europe.(Eble 22)
In his writings his life with Zelda is highly portrayed. In the writing of The Basil and Duke Lee
Stories there are a lot of similarities to his life. These stories are almost a diary of his life in a fictional
form.(Eble 22 24) The most popular of Fitzgerald s writings is The Great Gatsby. This is because
Fitzgerald s writing style had matured so much from his earlier works. The book offers great insight in
to his adult life, showing how truely unhappy he was. (Eble 86 88)
Each of these writers have contributed a great deal to American literature. Faulkner, Hemingway, and
Fitzgerald s lives had a great impact on their fiction. Through their writing, readers can begin to
understand the happenings of that decade. The twenties are always going to be remembered through
their works.

Verizon has a new commercial where the whole ad is based on the slogan half fast internet. Go ahead,
say it out loud. The entire commercial s dialogue has various people, mostly families, including a
mother in front of her child, saying half fast instead of half a$$ed. Clearly, Verizon hopes that a funny
play on word expression, not normally allowed in commercials, will drive sales. The idea of the
commercial series is that most broadband providers have slow upload speeds, making them only half

Corn Ethanol Controversy And The Chemical Formula Of Ethanol
Corn Ethanol Controversy!
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is a clear, colorless liquid. It is also known as ethyl alcohol, EtOH, and grain
alcohol. Ethanol is widely produced by processing grains such as corn or starch and sugar crops. The
grain is first milled, then fermented with yeast and different enzymes to turn the grain s starches into
alcohol(EPA). A distillation process then increases the ethanol concentrations, basically the same
process a whiskey maker would use to make whiskey. Of course, law mandates that a denaturant is
added, making the liquid unsafe for drinking. In the process, waste grain is produced and sold as farm
animal feed. Bioethanol, can be made from many types of trees and grasses, but the procedure is much
harder. The chemical formula of ethanol is the same whether it is made from starch and sugar based
feedstocks, such as corn grain (widely used in United States), sugar cane (Brazil), or from cellulosic
feedstocks (such as wood chips or crop residues). (The Alternative Fuels Data Center)
In the United States, ethanol is primarily used as a blending element in the production of gas and as an
alternative fuel. More than 95% of the gasoline sold in the United States contains ethanol. Most of
ethanol blending into U.S. motor gasoline occurs to meet the requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act
(RFG Fuel) and the Renewable Fuel Standard set forth in the Energy Independence and Security Act
of 2007. (U.S Energy Information Administration)

The Two Main Causes Of The Mexican-American War
Mexican American War
While often thought of as a small and insignificant war fought by the Americans, the Mexican
American War serves a lot of importance to the foundation and history of our country. This war
determined whether or not the United States would become a dominant power on the continent and it,
more importantly, established the size of the nation. The Mexican American War lasted from 1846
1848, but by the time President James Polk took office in 1845, United States Mexico relations were
already off to a bad start. While the Mexican American War was mainly caused by the idea of
Manifest Destiny and the Texas War for Independence/Annexation, it was also a major turning point in
the debate over slavery in the United States because of the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of
1850, and the Wilmot Proviso. The two main causes for the war were the American s obsession with
the concept and maintenance of Manifest Destiny and, the second cause was, the Texas War for
Independence/Annexation. Manifest Destiny is, basically, the belief that the United States had a God
given right to occupy and civilize the whole continent. With more Americans looking for land to
occupy westward due to the fact that there wasn t enough space on the east coast, the fact that most of
those areas were occupied didn t matter. Instead, an attitude that English speaking American would do

Tourism will be the major money catcher on the lake and riverside areas. Tourists will be attracted to
the city s beauty and fun activities (see aesthetics). Although tourism brings in a lot of money, small

Gardens will also be kept at most of the homes. Not much food will be transported into the city. The

How Does Sartre View Of Human Consciousness
The terms identified helps to articulate how Sartre views human consciousness. The sense of
forlornness results from the rejection of all transcendental and totalizing ideas. When Sartre argues
that human beings are forlorn, he is stressing the idea that they are without any sort of guidance from
transcendent ends. They are trapped with only their sense of freedom present, which brings about a
natural condition of anguish, in that nothing nor anyone can help to alleviate the pain of isolation and
loneliness, the condition of individual freedom, and more importantly, having to choose. It is this
choice that causes despair for nothing can lighten the burden of the agony of choice. Take, for

The inside of the apartment was nothing special. Brown carpeting and peered off tiles made it feel

prevented us from keeping our doors open. From our balcony view all you could see was the freeway
and the tag writing on the neighbors fences.
I knew this place was not the greatest, but it was better than what we previously had. My mother
always knew how to make the best of things, so she and my stepfather decided to refurbish the entire
apartment. The best part about it was that we did it with our very own hands. Everything was perfect.
The tiles by the door, kitchen, and dining room were white with a splash of peach and gray. The

living room was also replaced with glass to make the room look and feel larger than it actually was.
The rooms were nicely decorated with the same granite, tile, and carpet. My room was full of dcor of
all my childhood memories; stuffed animals, books, and school awards were dispersed throughout the

Agriculture is one of the key factors that shape your everyday life. Your time, money, nutrition, and

however, which method is healthier for human civilization? Some people believe that producing foods
and domesticating animals (agriculture in Neolithic Revolution) is more beneficial to humans.
However, the reasonings for which hunting and gathering is healthier overall are abundant. Hunting
and gathering (way of getting food in the Paleolithic Era) supplies a better and more varied amount of
nutrients, less vulnerability to famine and disease, and good leisure time with less work. Progressivists

hunting and gathering consists of many different food sources rather than just farming a lot of select

reasoning behind this is if your crops fail, then you probably won t have another source of food
because most farmers did not have the skillsets or physical ability for hunting and gathering. An
example of a catastrophic outcome with producing food could be the Great Famine in Ireland, where
potatoes became infested and became unable to eat which triggered the famine due to farmers being so

Bartleby works hard and does his job so well that everyone has a hard time imagining what it would
be like without him. After three days, Bartleby is asked by his boss to examine a legal paper. He
replies with I would prefer not to . The story ends with Bartleby being discovered occupying the office

By the end of the story, the constant refusals wear everyone down and he is left alone. When new
people move into the building, Bartleby still refuses to move from his office, leading to his arrest.

  • 2. Understanding The House Made of Dawn by Scott Momaday Essay Understanding The House Made of Dawn by Scott Momaday In 1969, N. Scott Momaday became the first Native American to win the Pulitzer Prize in the area of Letters, Drama, and Music for best Fiction. As Schubnell relates in N. Scott Momaday: The Cultural and Literary Background, Momaday initially could not believe that he had won a prize for a work that began as a poem (93). Schubnell cites one juror who explains his reasoning for selecting House Made of Dawn as being the work s eloquence and intensity of feeling, its freshness of vision and subject, [and] its immediacy of theme (93). For these reasons and many more, House Made of Dawn hailed the arrival on the American literary scene of a matured, sophisticated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1946, his family moved to Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico, the place that would later become the setting for House Made of Dawn. Here, Momaday saw swift changes roll through the tribal village, such as: an exploding population, the infiltration of technology and the culture of Anglo America, as well as alcoholism and crime. Momaday also witnessed the return of World War IIs soldiers, and the confusion and despair that accompanied them (Schubnell, 19). This period of Jemez s history would return years later in Momaday s novel, for Abel, the protagonist, is a veteran of WWII, and he, like the soldiers of Momaday s memories, is confused and desperate. Abel also turns to alcohol for relief. Momaday s experiences would also imprint upon his mind that only a sense of self which embraced both Indian and non Anglican realities could lead to a worthwhile future (Schubnell, 20). Owens suggest that it is this search for self, and a sense of identity, that lead him to write. Momaday, himself describes identity in terms of imagination: We are what we imagine. Our very existence consists in our imagination of ourselves. Our best destiny is to imagine, at least, completely, who and what, and that we are. The greatest tragedy that can befall us is to go unimagined (Owens, 93). In an interview with Schubnell, Momaday says: I believe that I fashion my own life out of words and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many people have wondered why this insignificant owl gets more press than the decimation of salmon streams nationwide, when it would have no economic impact on our society as a whole. The logging industry has made millions of dollars from the harvesting of old growth lumber over the past several decades. Recently, they have become more responsible about clear cut logging. Harvested forests are often replanted to provide for future wildlife habitat and logging efforts. However, this doesn t help the spotted owl. It needs old growth forests with their tangle of massive trees and thick dense brush. The logging industry is threatened by this small owl. Thousands of jobs have been lost. Families are starving. Lumber prices have skyrocketed. So this sets up a struggle. Loggers need the lumber for economic prosperity. Environmentalists want to protect this owl. How will both parties win? Can both parties win? There are many issues that arise out of this conflict. The public needs cost efficient lumber. The loggers need their jobs. The spotted owl needs a home. One of the largest concerns, dealing with the spotted owl / forest industry debate, is the loss of jobs. There were 21,000 jobs lost during the time that this debate took place (Ross, 1999). The amount of job losses in the logging and milling industry at this time were not solely attributed to the spotted owl controversy. The downward trend in the timber harvest

  • 8. Quantitative, Qualitative And Quantitative Methodologies Introduction Along with qualitative and quantitative methodologies in research, the trend of combining both qualitative and quantitative methodologies is widely used and increasingly articulated, attached to research practice and recognized as the third major research approach or research paradigm (Johnson, Onwuegbuzie Turner, 2007). As cited by Anaf and Sheppard (2007), Key in 1997 suggested the theory and meaning, qualitative and quantitative methodologies are distinct. A qualitative methodology s focus of research is in its nature and essence. The goal of investigation of qualitative methodology is understanding, description and discovery. It usually involves small, non random, and theoretical population. Data collection takes into account researcher as the primary instrument, and sometimes involve interviews and observations. The mode analysis of qualitative method is inductive which leads to findings that are comprehensive and holistic. It was also claimed that a quantitative method s focus of research usually involves how many or the quantity. The goal of investigation of a quantitative method is usually about prediction, control and confirmation. It usually involves large, random and representative sample. Data collection that are usually used are inanimate instruments, surveys and questionnaires. The mode of analysis is usually deductive and lead to a precise and reductionist way of findings as cited by Anaf and Sheppard (2007). As described above, if by features ... • 15. Perfume As A Critique Of Perfume An Analysis of Perfume as a Critique of Religion Perfume by Patrick Süskind follows Jean Baptiste Grenouille through an incredible journey of survival, perseverance, and ascension to godlike power. It, being set during the Enlightenment, depicts a time where people let curiosity reign and science flourish. Nevertheless, although people were becoming more scientific in their thought, religion was still a part of people s lives. The presence of religious elements in the novel, however, serves to be more than just a descriptive tool to flesh out the world of the novel. Because of the biblical parallels that present Grenouille as a messiah like figure, and also further comments on religion through narration, the reader is often pushed to consider the nature of faith and the faithful. In effect, Süskind uses Grenouille and the world of Perfume to examine and critique the functions and foundations of worshipping a god. One way the novel does so is by satirizing religion using sexual elements. In all major religions, sexuality is far removed from everything holy. This is especially true for Christian monks like Father Terrier. However, when Jeanne Bussie goes to him to give Grenouille back, he breathes in the scent of milk and cheesy wool exuded by the wet nurse (8) and finds it a pleasant aroma (8). However, these films have devoured the youth of America and, in the process; have perpetuated an institutionally racist society based on harsh stereotypes. It hooks us when we re little and never lets go; this unshakeable faith that Disney is the best at knowing what s best. (13) It is time that this myth be shattered. As far back as 1946, racial stereotyping of African Americans has been evident in Disney films. For instance, in the American classic Dumbo, the crows depict the typical southern African American with a slow pattern of speech. In Jungle Book (1967) the monkeys with African American voices are jiving in a crazy manner because they will never be real men and will always be animals. One of the most tragic examples of this racism can be seen in the movie Tarzan. In the original making of the movie, the white man comes to the rescue and tames all of the animals and natives. However, in the new Disney version of Tarzan (1999), the blacks that obviously inhabit Africa were completely eliminated and replaced by gorillas with African American voices. African American children whom view these films have no choice but to resort to relating to these often unintelligent, inferior animals because that is where they hear themselves. Obviously most of us would not start by learning calculus at two years old, or care about what grades we are getting in first grade, but the process of learning starts right away. This learning processes plays a significant role in developing us. There are three main learning theories we look at. Observational, Classical Conditioning, and Operant Conditioning. Observational learning occurs through observing the behaviors of others. This includes things like memorizing and reproducing things that someone showed you or you saw done. Classical Conditioning is when things happen multiple times and you learn a response to this. For example, the first time you spoke out in class in elementary school, you were not conditioned yet not to. The response to this might be being told to be quiet or a time out. You then are conditioned that if you talk, you will get in trouble. Then you have Operant Conditioning, which is behaviors that are associated with a consequence. An example to this is doing well in a swim competition becomes associated with an award. When you start your life you start learning by observing what you parents do. When you are young learning is done primarily from observing what goes on around you. • 25. The Pros And Cons Of Framing Framing is one of the most problematic methods of presenting information to a wide scale audience. It has replaced flatout bias as a more subtle way to persuade audience members, thus leaving uninformed people unable to see the whole of the information without the presenter to completely disclose their values or beliefs. To the uninformed masses, this method removes most, if not all, hope for a straightforward news service. While framing is just a tool used in journalism, without any inherent evils attached to it, we still see it s abuse from all sources of news. This abuse is what makes framing the most problematic methods of presenting information. First we should begin by defining what framing really is. Framing is when information is presented ... In Emily Dickinson s poem, in line 1, 2 Because I couldn t stop for death He kindly stopped for me the word death delivers a positive mood as the speaker seems respect and awe death. Moreover, death is portrayed as a phenomenon that is beyond ‎ human s control. Death has its own control; it is something that human cannot decide themselves but only death can do stop for human, invite them into its carriage, not vice versa. In ‎ addition, the word kindly in the line presents calmness to the readers as death is not something that human should scare off. Besides, the word slowly and the phrase no haste in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, in contrast to Emily s poem, the speaker undervalues death s supremacy as its power is actually not in its own control. It is a contradictory to Emily s poem. In line 9 Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men indicates death as a slave as it does what has been ordered from the superior ones. Death takes human s life not because he is willing to do so but because he is forced to do so. In line 10 11, And dost with poison, war and sickness... can make us sleep as well the speaker associates death with poison, war and sickness as death is not the only factor of human s deceases which then the speaker posts rhetorical question for death to stop being proud. Also, the usage of rhetorical questions like in line 2 For thou art not so makes death fragile. Further, the last line in this poem And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die points out that at the end, the only one who dies is death itself which will be discussed in the element of Christian theology in this essay. The ending also eventually argues that death is weak and vulnerable, not in control and that is the reason why human should not fear death. All the arguments made by the speaker in this poem creates death less powerful and less control of itself which illustrates a condescending tone to elucidate death s incapability to kill. Hence, both poets; Emily Dickinson and John Donne portray death as a phenomenon that human should not fear. But ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Corn Ethanol Controversy And The Chemical Formula Of Ethanol Corn Ethanol Controversy! Ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is a clear, colorless liquid. It is also known as ethyl alcohol, EtOH, and grain alcohol. Ethanol is widely produced by processing grains such as corn or starch and sugar crops. The grain is first milled, then fermented with yeast and different enzymes to turn the grain s starches into alcohol(EPA). A distillation process then increases the ethanol concentrations, basically the same process a whiskey maker would use to make whiskey. Of course, law mandates that a denaturant is added, making the liquid unsafe for drinking. In the process, waste grain is produced and sold as farm animal feed. Bioethanol, can be made from many types of trees and grasses, but the procedure is much harder. The chemical formula of ethanol is the same whether it is made from starch and sugar based feedstocks, such as corn grain (widely used in United States), sugar cane (Brazil), or from cellulosic feedstocks (such as wood chips or crop residues). (The Alternative Fuels Data Center) In the United States, ethanol is primarily used as a blending element in the production of gas and as an alternative fuel. The Two Main Causes Of The Mexican-American War Mexican American War While often thought of as a small and insignificant war fought by the Americans, the Mexican American War serves a lot of importance to the foundation and history of our country. This war determined whether or not the United States would become a dominant power on the continent and it, more importantly, established the size of the nation. The Mexican American War lasted from 1846 1848, but by the time President James Polk took office in 1845, United States Mexico relations were already off to a bad start. While the Mexican American War was mainly caused by the idea of Manifest Destiny and the Texas War for Independence/Annexation, it was also a major turning point in the debate over slavery in the United States because of the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, and the Wilmot Proviso. The two main causes for the war were the American s obsession with the concept and maintenance of Manifest Destiny and, the second cause was, the Texas War for Independence/Annexation.
