3. Introduction
Halda river is one of the major rivers in the South-East region of Bangladesh.
This river originates in the hilly streams of the Khagrachari district and flows
through the Fatickchari, Hathazari, and Rouzan of Chattogram districts covering 88
km, and then meets the river Karnaphuli.
The Halda river is unique for carp breeding.
The Halda River and 23,422 acres of land adjoining its banks as Bangabandhu
Fisheries Heritage.
This important river is getting polluted intensely in different ways, such as through
industrial, agricultural, domestic, and sewage disposal.
5. Halda river egg collection statistics
Good weather conditions still cause occasional blips in egg production. For instance, during
the years when there was a lot of rainfall, favorable temperature, and a minimum influx of
saltwater in the waterbody, about 33,000kg of eggs were hauled in 2008, 23,000kg in 2018,
and 25,536kg in 2020.
6. Different types of pollutants present in the halda river
Pathogens
Inorganic compounds
Organic materials
Salinity intrusion
Macroscopic pollutants
Sediments
Sources of pollutants in river Halda
Point Source
Non-point source
7. Major pollution source of Halda river
Men made source
Industrial pollution
Tannery
Agri-chemicals
Brick-fields
Constructions site
Paper mills
Power plants
Wastage from the boat
Natural source
Saltwater intorsion
Soil erosion and siltation
8. Effects of pollution in Halda river
Food web destruction
Death of fish and other animals
Create problems associated with fertility rate and spawning rate
High diseases rate
Lower egg production
9. Conclusion
The river Halda is considered the only gene bank of pure Indian carp fish like Ruhi,
Katla, Mrigel, and Kalibaush — globally, and hosts around 200 Gangetic dolphins
categorized as endangered by International Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN).
Most of the pollution sources that hamper the health of Halda river are men made
and the pollution gredually kill the only source of carp’s natural breeding ground.
