Lesson 6: Welcome to Brighton (Uruguay in focus 1)
OBJECTIVES:
- Revision of prepositions of place
There is / there are
- Introduce vocabulary (continents)
- Locate cities on a map
- Locate places in a city
- Share information about different places
- Read about a city
- Write a text describing the place where they live
- Work cooperatively
MATERIALS:
- Flash cards with prepositions of place from page 59
- Pictures of some famous cities and small cards with their names.
- Text from page 58 (2 complete versions, 32 versions with blanks)
- A map
- Board
- Books Uruguay 1
LESSON DEVELOPMENT
WARM UP ACTIVITY:
We´ll be using the map, the pictures and the small cards with the name of the cities. I´ll
show students the pictures, once they recognize it, a volunteer will place the city on
the map. While we do this, we´ll be sharing all the information they have about the
city, and I´ll use this opportunity to introduce the name of the continents we haven´t
seen yet (write them down on the board)
One of the cities we have to place is Brighton. One of my anticipations was that
students did not know where this city is, they suggested different countries, so we left
the card on the board with a big question mark.
2. TASK 1: Running dictation.
a) Organize groups of four using the cities from the warm up. Each student
receives a pieceof paper with the name of a city and a text with blanks. They
have to from groups with the other students that have the same city. They
complete the text working cooperatively.
b) Check the complete version of the text, write words on the board to make sure
they wrote them correctly. Invite them to open their books, lesson 6
c) Ask a volunteer to complete our work with the map, placing Brighton .
TASK 2: work with the lesson
a) Ask students to answer some questions about Brighton. They work in pairs.
-what kind of city is Brighton?
- Where is it situated?
- What important places can you visit there?
- What activities can tourists do?
b) go through the references, check students´ understanding of them
(what´s number …?).
Ask students to listen to some ideas and decide if they are TRUE or FALSE
(orally):
- There are two hotels in Brighton (F).
- There are two theatres in Brighton (T)
- There is a Railway station (T)
- There is a bus station on Queens Road (F)
Ask students to correct the information , clarify things like where the places
are, the name of the hotels / theatres, etc.
c) Play Discover the place! Using the map in the lesson.
Model the activity first T- S:
1. It is in Church Street, next to Dome Theatre. (Museum)
2. it´s in North Street, opposite the Lanes. (Theatre Royal)
Students continue working in pairs. Ask them to choose two places each.
TASK 3: Writing task
Students will be asked to write a similar text about the place where they live, taking
“Welcome to Brighton” as a model.
