Throughout this fall semester, as a Preservice Middle Level Educator, I have been observing and
engaging in Ms. Mahdi s 7th grade Science class. It is at this placement that I have collected
artifacts for a portfolio to illustrate a competency and achievement related to the Association for
Middle Level Educationstandards. In this portfolio summary you will find various artifacts that help
demonstrate these AMLE standards. The AMLE standards as a whole, cover academic growth and
set an expectation for middle school teachers to be mindful that their middle school students are
continuously experiencing social and cognitive changes that should be addressed thoughtfully, just
as much as their academic needs.
The first artifact I included was a sample of student work where the students were asked to fill out
a survey to verify and understand their learning styles. This artifact was introduced with some
history and with an emphasis on how important it is for students to know and understand their own
learning styles. After a discussion on the importance of knowing thyself the students graded and
scored their learning style preferences. Next followed a discussion on the various types of learning
styles and ways students could incorporate their preferred learning styles when doing homework,
classwork, and studying for assessments. This artifact is a good example of how Standard 4:
Element b., Middle Level Instructional Strategies, can be applied directly to student assessments.

What does it mean to be pious? In Plato s Dialogues and the Book of Job, the search for the
explanation can be attempted from the readings about Socrates and Job. The two are very
different. One, searches for a definition and questions the meaning of piety, whereas the other, Job,
one of the most pious men in biblical history, sets by example the meaning of piety by suffering
many of Gods punishments and yet he remains unwavering in his faith and God.
In Plato s Apology, Socrates is accused of impiety and later sentenced to an execution for reasons
that are injust. As a man who has lived his life as an honest and just man, he searches for the
definition of piety, in order to understand the accusation made against him. He turns to Euthyphro, a
wise man who is present at the court, who gives Socrates his explanation as to what it means to be
pious. However, to Socrates, each of the definitions he gives are opinionated and ambiguous and as
a result Socrates is left unfulfilled, with many still unanswered questions in the end.
The first definition of piety that Euthyphro offers to Socrates is that the pious is to do what I am
doing now to prosecute the wrong doer...not to prosecute is impious (6, e). Euthyphro is present
as a witness against his own father who is accused of murder. Socrates appreciates that he believes
so strongly in justice that he would hold his own family member accountable, but is displeased
with this meaning, simply because it is only an explanation and not a true meaning. Socrates wants
to know what pious means in and of itself, not an example or an act of being pious.
Euthyphro s second definition is linked to the gods. He explains that Pious is what all the gods
love, and the opposite, what all the gods hate, is impious (9, e), meaning that piety is determined
by the gods. Socrates finds this to be false, due to the fact that in order for the gods to decide
what is pious, they would all have to agree. However, each god has his/her own opinion about what
is honorable or just and what is not. Therefore, a decision is difficult to reach and Socrates

Michael Pollan is the author of several New York Times bestseller books including the Omnivore s
Dilemma. He is a professor of journalism at UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Michael
Pollan s perspective on food is that we should know what is in it and where it comes from, who
grows it and how. The theme of this book is the industrial revolution for food. Its purpose is to
make awareness that our food is getting its energy from our resources. Michael Pollan s goal with
the omnivore s dilemma was to shed light on the way we eat now by telling stories about how we
ate then and explaining the pros and cons of our change. He introduces his book about food ... Show
Michael refers to the supermarket as a landscape where all species derived from the single crop of
corn. Michael tells a story about a corn field in Iowa where the farm had been passed down to the
family and was quiet successful back in the day. George s crop in inedible they are fed to
livestock so shipped to factories to be processed. His family survives from the income of his
wife who works for a social services agency. The supply of corn has greatly surpassed the
demand and therefore alternative decisions must be made as to where the corn will go which is
why it is fed to cattle and other livestock. This is Pollan s way of tracing the steps of the industrial
food chain. Since corn is produced so cheaply using synthetic nitrogen which creates a dependency
on our fossil fuel resources rather than our solar resource. The Feedlot method has produced more
issues than solutions. Yes, it does result in fattening cattle quicker which in term then produces
faster meat but it results in manure that is extremely high in concentration of phosphorous and
nitrogen that cannot be used as fertilizer to regenerate nutrients in the soil. If the soil cannot be
regenerated cattle must be moved which leads to medical problems, which were attempted to be
solved using antibiotics but only increased antibiotic resistant bacteria. These new practices benefit
corporations that run them and produce easy and quick cheap meat but Pollan warns that they come

As a child I regularly listened to the radio broadcasts provided by the conservative Christian
organization, Focus on the Family both the daily broadcast on family issues and the weekly
broadcast of the radio drama for children, Adventures in Odyssey.
My understanding of family life and the meaning and content of Christian faith was heavily
influenced by these broadcasts. I listened carefully to the dangers of straying beyond the strict
confines of conservative Christian morality, and I can still hear the emphatic tone of voice in
which Dr. Dobson warned his listeners that the process of falling in love that begins with holding
hands will inevitably end up in bed if nothing is done to stop it.
Adventures in Odyssey was entertaining and funny, with engaging characters and high quality
production and story editing. I enjoyed listening to the adventures and getting to know the
characters. It was only later in life that I began to sort out the potentially damaging messages
within the drama from the more simple moralistic ideas of parental love and good behavior. I still
like to listen at times, for nostalgia s sake, but I am increasingly concerned by how the blithe and
joyful nature of the program masks what frequently amounts to bigotry, ignorance, and intolerance.
I am grieved that such a special part of my childhood is turning into something that is little better
than a propaganda tool for extreme right wing Christianity.

This will then serve as a basis for my main argument that human rights are socially constructed and
do not exist outside of the realm of politics. This will then feed into the second part of the question
where I shall discuss the prioritisation of community values over an alleged universal foundation.
Structure
The first part of the essay will concern itself with a more genealogical approach by looking at
early philosophical origins of human rights and how these evolved over the years. With this I seek
to outline the fact that while efforts to institutionalise human rights were initially a reaction towards
global injustice and oppression, in contemporary politics they are used to create power relations,
