Comparison Of Ellis Joseph s Character And Political Views
The history presented by Ellis Joseph in American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson
concerning Jefferson s life, including his drafting of the Declaration of Independence, diplomatic
experiences in Paris, domestic time spent at Monticello, terms of presidency, and final years, clarify
the development of his character and political views. Reoccurring themes of Jefferson s character
include his timid and conflicting demeanor, shown from his fright of public speaking and attention, his
use of paradoxes, shown by his opinions on slaves and Native Americans, and internal conflicts
regarding his large sums of debt, an alleged scandal with a his slave, and his constant desire for a
personal utopia. Yet despite Jefferson s contradictory character, ... Show more content on

Through glances of five periods during Thomas Jefferson s life, Joseph highlights Jefferson s
paradoxes, inconsistencies, and basic ideologies and theories that pressed his main decisions and
governance style throughout his lifetime. These clarify the development of his character and political
views and create a fascinating biography on this captivating president.
Joseph Ellis studied at the College of William and Mary and Yale University and has focused his
writing on early president biographies. His interests on this subject include how these men impacted
their times and how they were affected by them. He emphasizes character in these profiles, especially
in his most acknowledged works, Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation and American
Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson. Joseph writes of Jefferson s life chronologically,
beginning with his work as Virginia s delegate to the Continental Congress, drafting the Declaration of
Independence, and his final years in retirement at Monticello. He also describes his occupations as
Secretary of State, diplomatic works in France, as president, and as a

Kalam Cosmological Argument
Among various theories supporting the existence of God, cosmological arguments are strongest. This
concept suggests that the existence of the universe has reason (Davies 48). Cosmological arguments
consider how the universe came into existence. The kalam cosmological argument supports the theory
that the universe could not have commenced by itself (Davies 49).
Design arguments are weakest when asserting that the existence of God is attributable to
characteristics displayed by the universe. Aquinas concluded that objects without knowledge cannot
have goals unless a higher power is directing them (Davies 76). Davies uses an example of acorns
consistently growing into oak trees to support this statement (76). However, David Hume suggests that
order in the universe could easily be the result of chance (Davies 79). ... Show more content on

Design arguments are less persuasive, because the regularity we experience in the universe could be
due to chance (Davies 79).
There are some weak points in cosmological arguments, however. One major weakness is that there is
no way to prove the existence of the universe has a cause. For example, David Hume believes that if
we are capable of imagining a universe without cause, then it is possible that the universe could have
begun without reason (Davies 50). Another argument states that the universe is infinite, and if that is
the case, then every event has a predecessor. This would mean that there was no beginning of the
universe (Davies 53).
There are few strengths in design arguments with the exception of having an explanation for the
mundane occurrences of life. While I find design arguments intriguing, I cannot believe that inanimate
objects receive instruction from a godly entity. Cosmological arguments are more plausible, as it is not
difficult to accept the theory that the universe came into existence because of

Targets of Satire in The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to...
Targets of Satire in The Ultimate Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy Douglas Adams satirizes many
targets in The Ultimate Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy. Adams came up with the idea for The
Ultimate Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy in a drunken haze in Germany while he was lying in a field
with the stars spinning over him (Adams, Douglas 12) which explains the style of humor, and the
satire in the novel, which does not appear to make sense at first, but eventually does. Adams almost
forgot about his idea for the novel (Gaiman 7). The Ultimate Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy
satirizes many targets, but especially government and religion. The Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy
began as an idea that Adams had, believe it or not, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Contrary to that fact of radical atheism, however, the satire of religion is generally mild. For example,
God does exist, but His final message to the Universe is We apologize for the Inconvenience (Adams,
Ultimate Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy, IV 665). However, other minor gods also exist, with Thor
being a recurrent character. Another particularly memorable moment is when Zarquon, a Jesus
surrogate character, returns to the Universe... a few seconds before the Universe ends (Galaxy, II 272),
demonstrating how Adams believes that even if religions are correct, that would not change much.
Finally, Adams satirizes religion very effectively with the in book device, the Hitchhiker s Guide to
the Galaxy Mk. II, which is a device which appears to be a bird, but has immense power. God indeed
exists in The Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy, but that s about the extent of His powers. His entire
involvement in the series is minimal. The opening words of one of the novels are In the beginning, the
Universe was created. This has made a lot of people angry and been widely regarded as a bad move
(Adams II, 176). So the first thing God does in the entire history of everything was a mistake, in
Adams s eyes. Next, when God sent Jesus, in the words of the novel, One man had been nailed to a
tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change (Adams I, 18). So, according to
Adams, God has almost no power to influence

Christian Service Research Paper
What is service? Service is the action of helping others in need without anyone asking you to do so.
Doing service for others is very important in our life because we are called to serve and not to be
served by others. God sent His son Jesus to serve and not to be served. The purpose of life is not to be
happy, but to be useful, honorable, and compassionate in serving others. When we serve others, we
also serve God. Giving and helping is happiness. During my junior year at Cristo Rey, I did my
Christian Service hours at Cristo Rey, St. Rose Church and Loaves and Fishes. Last September 2016 I

I didn t know what to do the first time I started. I talked to the supervisor who gave me the tasks and
asked for help for me to know what I was going to do. Then the supervisor explained the tasks and
gave examples for me to understand the tasks. I tried my best to perform my duty and do my work
well. I developed new attitudes, including being patient, work hard, cooperate and communicate with
others. I learned new skills, including doing things quickly and safety. I now knew how to adjust
myself to work with different people, especially those people whom I did not know. The new skills I
learned from other people will help me a lot in other areas of my life. I can use the things that I
learned to make my life easier and be my guide to achieve my goals to be successful. Doing my
Christian Service is very important for me. I learned many things that I can apply to other areas of my
life. I learned how to work hard, to make my life fruitful. The biggest struggles that I met is that I don
t know where to or how to apply for my Christian Service. My greatest gift is that other students and
staff helped me. The greatest contribution of my service work is that I learned how to work with other
people and I got some good experience from others and I learned the work that I didn t know before. I

extremely catchy jingle to capture the audience and have it ringing through their minds all day. We
have used a meerkat in which Aleksandr (Founder of CompareTheMeerkat.com) has kindly given
from his website, Comparethemeerkat.com. Where we have chosen to set this ad is of high standards

We have placed a modern aspect in an old place to show the contrast between the two. Websites that
obviously weren t around when the house in the background was built. However there are lots of other
old things that are used throughout the ad such as the old music player that plays the tapes for the two
ad campaigns, Compare the Market and Compare the Meerkat. All of the old thing is the house are
dull, dark and boring to look at so what have made the presentation boards bright blue and green to
make them stand out from the rest of the house so they have a huge impact on the audience. This
meerkat maybe classy and sophisticated but he is old school inclined. This will help it appeal to the
older demographic that we are targeting and well as the younger group.
In the first scene of the ad the meerkat says, Meerkats, car insurance. Two very different things. He
lets the audience know that they are advertising car insurance however you never see a car or there is
never another mention of cars or car insurance. We have done this so the viewers will feel inclined to
see what he was really talking about and discover that there is more to compare the market than just

Most Common Mood Disorder
Mood disorders are defined by the DSM (diagnostic statistical manual) as: a psychiatric disorder in
which the principal feature is mood disturbance (mentalhealth.gov). There are several different types
of mood disorders. The most common of the disorder are; Bipolar Disorder, Seasonal Affective
Disorder, Self harm, and depression. However, depression is the one that goes undiagnosed the most.
Depression is known as the common cold of mood disorders. It is the fastest spreading and most
common mood disorder in the world. Therefore it is as common as a cold. One out of ten people in
America have been affected by depression. Eighty percent of the people that have symptoms of
depression are not receiving treatment (mentalhealth.gov). However, these are the reported and
diagnosed totals of people in the world with depression. There are a number of people that go
undiagnosed for this mood disorder. Depression is defined as a mood disorder that causes a persistent
feeling of sadness and loss of interest , according to the Mayo Clinic website. However depression is
much more than that. It comes in different forms and types and affects people in different ways.
However with early detection and the proper treatment people can successfully overcome depression.

biological differences are a factor in that there appears to be a physical change in the brain that causes
depression. In brain chemistry, neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in
maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment, according to the
Mayo Clinic website. Changes in the balance of the body s hormones can also lead to depression.

Enlightened Despotism in Prussia
Assignment: 1
Critically examine the main features of Enlightened Despotism in 18th century Prussia.
The Enlightenment refers to an important cultural and intellectual movement of the 18th century,
whose goal was to establish knowledge based on an enlightened rationality. Enlightened Absolutism
or Enlightened Despotism as it is more often called can be defined as a form of government strongly
influenced by the wide propagation of ideas and the political philosophy of the Enlightenment. It is a
term first used by the Philosophes in the second half of the 18th century that manifested to describe a
particular phase in the development of absolutism. The term Enlightened Despot refers to those 18th
century monarchs who were familiar with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Christian Wolff was the first to introduce the ideas of the Enlightenment into German administrative
theory. His ideas derive from the Enlightenment. According to Wolff, the state was a voluntary
contract between individuals and the main purpose of the state was to further welfare and security. At
the same time, since the state has the duty to plan and implement measures for security and welfare, it
has the right to insist that its citizens obey its orders. It is emphasized that they are bound to do
willingly whatever the authorities deem to be right. These ideas were expounded and elaborated,
without adding anything new, by the German political theorists of the 18th century and particularly by
the followers of Wolff.
In practice, Enlightened Absolutism was certainly not so radical. The Physiocrats never got beyond
the initial stages in the implementation of their doctrines. Thus the French doctrine of Despotisme
éclaire remains an interesting trend of thought, but its practical effect was almost nil. The direct
influence of the German 18th century administrative theory was not much as well.
Frederick II of Prussia is often regarded as the first true enlightened despot. He was the first monarch
who declared the sovereign is the first servant of the state and presented Europe with a model of
progressive monarchy. Frederick cultivated friendship with several Philosophes and believed that
inputs from them could be used to make the administration of

will be a huge change. The largeness of Springfield Missouri will present many opportunities to

of the school and the surrounding city is a bit alarming.

Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Essays
Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut
The story is a satire, a parody of an ideological society divorced from common sense reality
(Townsend). As Townsend stated Kurt Vonnegut makes a satire about society in his fictional short
story Harrison Bergeron, which in their society there has been attempt of conformity through the
handicaps of the people, the similarity to an authoritarian government, and the technology, whereas
the people will eventually overcome. The Kind if government authority seen both mimics and satirizes
the way Americans came to see the enemy (the Soviet Union) during the Cold War, which was near its
height of distrust and fear in the late 1950 s and early 1960 s. As an attempt to make the economy

The handicaps are based on what the individual citizens is better at and what they are not. For
example, George one of the characters in the story, for whom is very intelligent and sharp. Because, he
s so intelligent his handicap has to be a device that has a loud distinct beep that disturbs his train of
thought every twenty minutes. George also has a bag of lead balls that weigh him down. The irony of
the so call handicaps is that the people of this nation like George will get use to their handicaps. After
a while a person will get use to the weight and learn to think faster than twenty seconds
Technology is one of the main means of communication and entertainment. Such entertainment is
television, which was invented by John Baird in 1926. In a Newton Minow speech he states that
violence as a contributor to this wasteland he lists what people see on the television and what they
take from it. In the story Harrison s mother watches her son on the television he get shot to death and
does not even remember what she saw five minutes later. After the commotion was over she says, I
could tell that one was a doozy (Vonnegut). That is what television does to a person that is
intellectually impaired.
Harrison Bergeron is satire of today s society he makes this satire applicable through the handicaps of
the people, the similarity authoritarian government, and the technology. As a result of these factors
that have been stated the

The Pros And Cons Of African Americans In Reconstruction
The Civil War ended in 1865 and while the thirteenth amendment was being passed lots of African
Americans faced problems. With the death of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson became president
and while he worked with Lincoln he lacked Lincoln s critical thinking and thought that African
Americans shouldn t be involved in reconstruction. The definition of freedom is the power or right one
has to speak and think as one wants without restraint. Although African Americans were still being
treated like vermin by whites and struggled economically they were politically free. In the year 1866,
the Civil rights act was passed and it allowed African Americans to own property and be treated
equally in court. The only problem with that was the south refused to obey the laws. Once Johnson
pulled all the men out of the south who were suppose to protect the rights of African Americans
everything fell apart. Henry Adams was traveling and six miles south of town he was beaten by four
white men with sticks. The men threatened to kill every Negro that claimed he did not belong to
anyone. On his way to Shreveport, he noticed twelve colored men and women beat, shot and hung (
doc D). So, while blacks were free many people in the South believed the there way of life was better
and continued to treat African Americans poorly. It got to the point where President Johnson came up
with new rules for African Americans that they would abide by. These new rules were called the Black
Codes (C). The Black

THE SUCCESS OF CARLOS GHOSN IN NISSAN AND RENAULT ALLIENCE Today in this
modern era everybody is getting practical, now a days people only like to believe in facts and never
trust in something that does not exist or they do not consider real but there is one thing that does exist
but not everybody believes in it, i.e., Miracle . Basically what is miracle...? An effect or extraordinary
event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and ascribed to be a
supernatural cause (Dictionary.com, 2014, what is miracle) but people sometimes take miracle
otherwise, they limit miracles to just scriptural sense, i.e., only related to bible, (Wayne Jackson, 1998
2014), but I believe that some miracles are part of our complicated and practical life, which do exist in
the real world, which have the capacity to astonish people with their surprising results and the
outcome of which can change somebody s (Nissan Motors) life forever and with this perception in
mind I have described a magical story in my essay about Renault and Nissan Motor s collaboration ,
and its outcome on Nissan s survival, in which the role of miracle man is played by Carlos Ghosn who
changed the structure of the company and brought it out from the state of big losses (Approximately
$22 Billion) to the state of huge profits within a very short period of time (Within 18 19 months of

World War 1 Turning Point Essay
World War 1 or the Great War was a turning point for war in itself and for the people s view of it.
Before war was something to be celebrated but the creation of machine guns, gasses, and other
horrible creations of the 1910s made war something to be feared by everyone. The assassination of
Austrian Prince Archduke Ferdinand by a Serbian Nationalist Gavrilo Princip stirred up tensions
leading to World War 1 starting in mid August 1914, which put the Allied powers ( Great Britain,
France, Russia, Italy Japan, and in 1917 the United States) against the Central powers ( Germany,
Austria Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire). World War 1 lasted 4 years and brought more casualties

Reflection On Learning Disability
I begin the interview by introduced myself, and explaining the purpose of the interview, I informed the
narrator that this interview will be recorded, transcribed and both the disability and interview
experience will be presented in the class. I asked if she was comfortable with these conditions, and
letting her know if at any time she feel uncomfortable to answer any type of questions, she is under no
obligations to answer them. I started the recording and the interview by asking her a brief basic
personal information, including her age, where does she live and if she considered herself as disable.
Once we established that she considered her slight disable, to better understand why she considered
herself disable, and why only slightly, I asked her if she can describe on what she meant. She implied
that her learning disability affects her workforce, and her mental disability effects mostly on her social
participations. She would make mistakes at work, and having bipolar disorder mean she was easily
overwhelmed and may cause her coworkers to avoid her, and when she is depressed, she would avoid

For the reason that she has both learning disability and mental disorder, I felt strongly to understand
her childhood, I started with the questions that was provided by the instructor of the course, I wanted
to know about her childhood environment and her parents roles in her life. I was also curious about
her earliest memory, and whether she

Examples Of Rebirth In Phoenix Jackson
How Phoenix Jackson Represents Rebirth and Immortality When reading the colorful story Worn Path
by Eudora Welty, her many descriptions bringing life to what would have been a desolated America
during the Great Depression. Phoenix Jackson, main character, herself even becoming something to
examine and study, as well as the characters and environment she encounters. Phoenix Jackson
embarks on a journey to retrieve medicine for her sick grandson. Phoenix Jackson is described first as
old African American woman. When given her description of herself (outfit and features), personality,
and her many struggles to retrieve medicine, can been seen as rebirth or immortality, as well as
describing America and it s future after depression. Phoenix Jackson s body, that is described, and her
ethnicity are worth studying. At this time in history, the nineteen thirties, being a woman and African
American were both downsides to what would have been desired: Caucasian and male. Phoenix
Jackson s skin tone is also described very differently as well, with patches of multi skin tone with blue
rage eyes (288). At first it is another noteworthy description, but when view deeper it could represent
multiple things. Like many rebirthing that of a phoenix (mythical bird, that rebirth in a fireball, and
reborns from their ashes) goes through, signifying her treacherous journey and obstacles overcome. It
also can be used to show the diversity of not just her, but of America, where everyone old, sick, poor,
no matter of race suffering all together. Phoenix Jackson wrinkles on her face, described as a tree
roots, where tree sported in the middle of her face. Then even goes as far as telling us that gold
underlining around her wrinkles and forehead, a color commonly associated with phoenix colors
(usually represented as gold and red). Which explains her red rag that she wears around her head. Like
that of a phoenix, she herself is draped like one. From Phoenix s scalp to her golden wrinkles. The
personality of Phoenix Jackson is that as one of a mad hatter. Perfectly sane when things are in her
sight, but with a vivid imagination many things come to life. The scarecrow, that she saw as a flapping
ghost, only to realize after

The Causes of Market Failure
Why do markets fail to generate socially desirable outcomes? Markets are not infallible. They can fail
to organise economic activity in a socially desirable fashion. Markets failure are due to social
inefficiency and inequity. In the real world, the market rarely leads to social efficiency: the marginal
social benefits of most goods and services do not equal the marginal social cost. Part of the problem is
the existence of externalities , part is a lack of competition, and part is the fact that markets may take a
long time to adjust to any disequilibrium, given the often considerable short run immobility of factors
of production. Let s analyse the types of market failure.
Externalities
The market will not lead to social efficiency if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In more extreme cases it could make various activities illegal which make also caused market failure.
Changes in Property Rights
Limited nature of property rights. Property rights define who owns property, to what uses it can be
put, the rights other people have over it and how it may be transferred. By extending these rights,
individuals may be able to prevent other people imposing costs on them, or charge them for doing so.
For example, the rich can afford better justice for top lawyers. Thus even you have a right to sue a
large company for dumping toxic waste near you, you may not have the legal muscle to win.
Taxes from the Government
When there are imperfections in the market, social efficiency will not be achieved. Marginal social
benefit (MSB) will not equal social cost (MSC). A different level of output would be more desirable. It
forces firms to take on board the full social costs and benefits of their actions. For example, the bigger
the external costs of a firm s actions, the bigger the tax can be.
Behaviour of Monopolies and Oligopolies
Monopolies may lead to inefficient allocation of resources because they may encourage suppliers to
charge an abnormally high price and produce too little, thereby diminishing overall social welfare.
They also have important distributional effects, leading to a redistribution of gains from exchange
away from the consumers to the monopolist. If the monopoly continues to persist in the

Deep Allegory in Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown Essay
Deep Allegory in Young Goodman Brown
Herman Melville in Hawthorne and His Mosses (The Literary World August 17, 24, 1850), comments
on the deep allegory found within Nathaniel Hawthorne s tale, Young Goodman Brown.
Young Goodman Brown ? You would of course suppose that it was a simple little tale, intended as a
supplement to Goody Two Shoes. Whereas, it is deep as Dante; nor can you finish it, without
addressing the author in his own words It is yours to penetrate, in every bosom, the deep mystery of
sin. And with Young Goodman, too, in allegorical pursuit of his Puritan wife, you cry out in your
anguish. . . .
The use of allegory in his short stories is characteristic of Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the ... Show more

Stanley T. Williams in Hawthorne s Puritan Mind states that the author was always perfecting his
delicate craft of the symbol, of allegory (42). A. N. Kaul states : In an effort to apprehend and
adequately reflect the new complexity of man s life, he [Hawthorne] molded the venerable in his case
directly inherited allegorical method into the modern technique of symbolism (3).
M. H. Abrams defines an allegory as a narrative, whether in prose or verse, in which the agents and
actions, and sometimes the setting as well, are contrived by the author to make coherent sense on the
literal, or primary, level of signification, and at the same time to signify a second, correlated order of
signification (5). It is quite obvious from the names of the characters in Young Goodman Brown that
their names are contrived to give a secondary signification. Goodman is on the primary level a simple
husband who is following his curiosity about evil; on the level of secondary signification he is
Everyman or the new Adam: R. W. B. Lewis in The Return into Rime: Hawthorne states: Finally, it
was Hawthorne who saw in American experience the re creation of the story of Adam and who . . .
exploited the active metaphor of the American as Adam before and during and after the Fall (72).
Goodman responds in this way to the fellow traveler when the latter implicates the governor in
devilish deeds:
Can this be so! cried Goodman Brown, with a stare of amazement at his

An Organization Known As The Comanche Club
IN 1928, when I was nine, I belonged, with maximum esprit de corps, to an organization known as the
Comanche Club. Every schoolday afternoon at three o clock, twenty five of us Comanches were
picked up by our Chief outside the boys exit of P. S. 165, on 109th Street near Amsterdam Avenue. We
then pushed and punched our way into the Chief s reconverted commercial bus, and he drove us
(according to his financial arrangement with our parents) over to Central Park. The rest of the
afternoon, weather permitting, we played football or soccer or baseball, depending (very loosely) on
the season. Rainy afternoons, the Chief invariably took us either to the Museum of Natural History or
to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Chief always found us.)
In his hours of liberation from the Comanches, the Chief was John Gedsudski, of Staten Island. He
was an extremely shy, gentle young man of twenty two or three, a law student at N.Y.U., and
altogether a very memorable person. I won t attempt to assemble his many achievements and virtues
here. Just in passing, he was an Eagle Scout, an almost All America tackle of 1926, and it was known
that he had been most cordially invited to try out for the New York Giants baseball team. He was an
impartial and unexcitable umpire at all our bedlam sporting events, a master fire builder and
extinguisher, and an expert, uncontemptuous first aid man. Every one of us, from the smallest
hoodlum to the biggest, loved and respected him.
The Chief s physical appearance in 1928 is still clear in my mind. If wishes were inches, all of us
Comanches would have had him a giant in no time. The way things go, though, he was a stocky five
three or four no more than that. His hair was blue black, his hair line extremely low, his nose was large
and fleshy, and his torso was just about as long as his legs were. In his leather windbreaker, his
shoulders were powerful, but narrow and sloping. At the time, however, it seemed to me that in the
Chief all the most photogenic features of Buck Jones, Ken Maynard, and Tom Mix had been smoothly

Evaluating the Levels of Processing Theory Essay
Evaluating the Levels of Processing Theory
The levels of Processing theory was put forward in 1972 by Craik and Lockhart. This theory came
about after they criticised the Multi store model of memory saying it was too simplistic and
descriptive rather that actually explaining the model. This theory was an alternative to the Multi store
model as it replaces the idea of Short term and Log term memory. Levels of processing theory
believes that information can be processed at different levels at the same time. The deeper the
information is processed, the more likely it will be remembered.

The depth of the information go from shallow to deep processing. The levels are made up of structural
processing which are upper and lower class letters, Phonetic or sound processing which are rhyming
words and lastly semantic processing which is about the meanings of the words. The experiment done
in our lesson was about different types of processing. Results of that showed that the semantic
processing was the one that we had processed the deepest as we had to actually recognise and process
the words into our long term memory, and not just based on the appearance of the word. When
information is first processed, it goes to the sensory memory. From there if the information I attended
to, it will be processed into the short term memory and if not it will probably be lost. If information
from the short term memory is rehearsed, it will be processed into the long term memory where it can
stay for up to a lifetime. There are two types of rehearsal which are used in different ways of
remembering information. These are called elaborative rehearsal and maintenance rehearsal.
Maintenance rehearsal involves purely repeating the information over and over again, whereas
elaborative rehearsal involves doing something with the material a you repeat it,

Outline Of Merchant Of Venice
The Merchant of Venice Essay Outline
Introduction:
Hook: The theme is the main subject or message of a story. It is used to give depth and enhance the
plot. Mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:13)
Bridge: When you read The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare there are many themes
throughout the play and many lessons to be learned.
Main Ideas: The most important themes are hatred, mercy and friendship because they have a
significant meaning and help advance the plot.
Thesis: The most important themes are hatred, mercy and friendship because they have a significant
meaning and help advance the plot.
Body Paragraph One:
Topic Sentence:One of the main themes of this play is hatred and prejudice .Throughout the play,
Shakespeare makes fun of other nationalities and religions.
Subpoint #1: Since the beginning of the play, you can tell that Shylock and Antonio strongly dislike
each other .
Example: I hate him for he is a Christian, But more for that in low simplicity He lends out money
gratis and brings down the rate of usance here with us in Venice. If I can catch him once upon the hip,I
will feed fat the ancient grudge I bear him. (Act 1 scene 3) Analysis: From this quote, we learn that
Shylock hates Antonio for being a Christian and for lending money with no interest. Antonio hates
Shylock for being Jewish. Both of them have grudges against each other and they want to get revenge.
You can tell from this quote that back in those times, Jewish people weren t treated right.
Subpoint #2: another example of prejudice in this play is when Portia rejects the Prince of Morocco.
Even though she doesn t know him she judged him for his skin color. Example: If I could bid the fifth
welcome with so good heart as I can bid the other four farewell, I should be glad of his approach. If he
have the condition of a saint and the complexion of a devil, I had rather he should shrive me than wive
me. (Act 1 scene 2)
Analysis:In this quote, she is saying that even if he were a saint she would never marry him because
he has dark skin.
Paragraph Conclusion: In the end, William Shakespeare seems biased towards people of different
races and religions by using stereotypes and discrimination.

The Native Tribes Of The Great Plains And The Eastern...
The native tribes of the Great Plains and the Eastern Woodlands have surprisingly different adaptions
and responses to their expansions by settlers; not only in their cultures, but in their subsistence,
warfare, peacemaking, and gender roles as well. Both tribes were forced to adapt and change due to
the overtaking on the European settlers, but both managed to do it in different ways. First, I will look
at the tribes of the Great Plains. These nomadic tribes survived on hunting, and the great American
Buffalo was their main source of food. These massive animals were the main source for many items
the Plains tribes made from their flesh, hide and bones, such as foods, cups, decorations, tools, knives,
and clothing. The tribes followed the seasonal grazing and migration of buffalo in order to maintain
their diet and subsistence throughout the year. The Plains Indians lived in tipis because they were
easily disassembled and allowed the nomadic life of following game. When horses from the Spanish
were finally obtained, the Plains tribes rapidly joined them into their daily lives. The natives began to
acquire these horses in the 17th century by trading or stealing them from the Spanish colonists in,
what is now, New Mexico. The tribes of the Great Plains were not particularly violent when the
Spanish first invaded, three factors led to the growing importance of warfare in Plains culture. First,
was the Spanish colonization of the New Mexico colony which stirred up raids and

Dramatic Monologue In Porphyria s Lover By Robert Browning
Robert Browning s Porphyria s Lover is a narrative poem, since it delineates the events taking place at

speaker s character by what he says and does. The continuing action of the poem (i.e. one event after
the other) as well as the speaker s frenzy are indicated by the immense number of run on lines (e.g.

Information and Technology Literacy Paper
In the modern day technology and information are developing, changing, and is exchanged at a rapid
pace. With so much information out there and a constantly evolving landscape of technology it is
important to know how to find, use and validate new information and technology.
Information literacy is a set of abilities that allow someone to understand when where there is a need
for information. (Information Literacy: Home. (n.d.)., 2015)This also includes the ability to discover
and asses the quality of the information that was found. In addition this information must be used in
successful manner.
Technology literacy is an ability set of an individual to use technology is the ability of a person
working independently and with others to responsibly, appropriately and effectively use technological
tools to access, manage, evaluate, create and communicate information. (Definition of Technology
Literacy.,2005)

The Pros And Cons Of Police Should Wear Body Cameras

The camera has recorded every move his board has made since the record button was pressed. This is
not the same as using it when a police officer pulls someone over, or when an officer is chasing
someone down, this was for leisure With the deaths of unarmed people like Eric Garner, Michael

cameras has popped up constantly.

The Influence of Locke and Hobbes on Government
Thomas Hobbes and John Locke have authored two works that have had a significant impact on
political philosophy. In the Leviathan by Hobbes and Two Treatises of Government by Locke, the
primary focus was to analyze human nature to determine the most suitable type of government for
humankind. They will have confounding results. Hobbes concluded that an unlimited sovereign is the
only option, and would offer the most for the people, while for Locke such an idea was without merit.
He believed that the government should be limited, ruling under the law, with divided powers, and
with continued support from its citizens. With this paper I will argue that Locke had a more realistic
approach to identifying the human characteristics that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This absolute Sovereign will gain power when the citizens have given up the entirety of their rights to
this new authority and agreeing to a covenant. This is considered a rational action, and is the only
option for the body of people to smoothly come together. When that happens, an organized society
forms, in which the consequences of not adhering to the rules and regulations of the covenant will be
so severe, that no one would attempt to violate this contract and disobey the Sovereign. That can
happen since first, the Sovereign has deadly force and is permitted to use it whenever he or she likes,
and, second, the citizens have parted away with all their rights, and cannot protect themselves from
this Sovereign. That fact creates a fearful, and therefore, obedient society. This limitless Sovereign is
justified, based on information from the Leviathan. As we can infer from Hobbes views on human
nature, people will always act selfishly and in an evil manner to obtain the things that they want. As a
result, for people to contract into a peaceful society that will have what they want and need readily
available, they must be bound by force. If this distrustful group of people had an inclination that the
governing authority was weak, they would overturn it, fatefully returning them to the state of nature.
Additionally, this absolute monarchy is considered warranted, according to

Cost Benefit Analysis Of Spotsylvania County Public Schools
Cost Benefit Analysis In recent years, the homeschooled population in Spotsylvania County Public
Schools (SCPS) has continued to grow. Due to state regulations, the governing body of the division,
the Spotsylvania County School Board (SCSB) developed a policy to address the procedures and
protocols necessary to guide homeschooling options in the division: Policy LBD (2015) (See
Appendix A). According to L. Binion, Guidance Director for SCPS, currently the division has 1,036
registered and 31 pending homeschooled students in grades K 12 (personal communication,
November 13, 2015). Further, although the division has generally averaged 3 4 additional requests
weekly, requests have skyrocketed to 1 2 per day for the past several weeks. The spike is likely
connected to two recent negative events associated with the division a thwarted mass shooting plan,
and a case of severe hazing at a high school, (L. Binion, personal communication, November 19,
2015). There are financial ramifications for the school division each time a student is opt ed out of the
public school system. State funding is determined by Average Daily Membership (ADM), which
equates to $5,418 per student for Fiscal Year 2015 (VEA, 2014). Thus, the current cost of registered
homeschooled students in SCPS is a staggering $5,613,048. Consequently, examining ways in which
the division can address the needs of the homeschooled population while recapturing lost funds is
imperative. SCPS is currently investigating

  • 2. Comparison Of Ellis Joseph s Character And Political Views The history presented by Ellis Joseph in American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson concerning Jefferson s life, including his drafting of the Declaration of Independence, diplomatic experiences in Paris, domestic time spent at Monticello, terms of presidency, and final years, clarify the development of his character and political views. Reoccurring themes of Jefferson s character include his timid and conflicting demeanor, shown from his fright of public speaking and attention, his use of paradoxes, shown by his opinions on slaves and Native Americans, and internal conflicts regarding his large sums of debt, an alleged scandal with a his slave, and his constant desire for a personal utopia. Yet despite Jefferson s contradictory character, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through glances of five periods during Thomas Jefferson s life, Joseph highlights Jefferson s paradoxes, inconsistencies, and basic ideologies and theories that pressed his main decisions and governance style throughout his lifetime. These clarify the development of his character and political views and create a fascinating biography on this captivating president. Joseph Ellis studied at the College of William and Mary and Yale University and has focused his writing on early president biographies. His interests on this subject include how these men impacted their times and how they were affected by them. He emphasizes character in these profiles, especially in his most acknowledged works, Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation and American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson. Joseph writes of Jefferson s life chronologically, beginning with his work as Virginia s delegate to the Continental Congress, drafting the Declaration of Independence, and his final years in retirement at Monticello. • 3. Kalam Cosmological Argument Among various theories supporting the existence of God, cosmological arguments are strongest. This concept suggests that the existence of the universe has reason (Davies 48). Cosmological arguments consider how the universe came into existence. The kalam cosmological argument supports the theory that the universe could not have commenced by itself (Davies 49). Design arguments are weakest when asserting that the existence of God is attributable to characteristics displayed by the universe. Aquinas concluded that objects without knowledge cannot have goals unless a higher power is directing them (Davies 76). Davies uses an example of acorns consistently growing into oak trees to support this statement (76). However, David Hume suggests that order in the universe could easily be the result of chance (Davies 79). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Design arguments are less persuasive, because the regularity we experience in the universe could be due to chance (Davies 79). There are some weak points in cosmological arguments, however. One major weakness is that there is no way to prove the existence of the universe has a cause. For example, David Hume believes that if we are capable of imagining a universe without cause, then it is possible that the universe could have begun without reason (Davies 50). Another argument states that the universe is infinite, and if that is the case, then every event has a predecessor. This would mean that there was no beginning of the universe (Davies 53). There are few strengths in design arguments with the exception of having an explanation for the mundane occurrences of life. While I find design arguments intriguing, I cannot believe that inanimate objects receive instruction from a godly entity. Cosmological arguments are more plausible, as it is not difficult to accept the theory that the universe came into existence because of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Targets of Satire in The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to... Targets of Satire in The Ultimate Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy Douglas Adams satirizes many targets in The Ultimate Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy. Adams came up with the idea for The Ultimate Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy in a drunken haze in Germany while he was lying in a field with the stars spinning over him (Adams, Douglas 12) which explains the style of humor, and the satire in the novel, which does not appear to make sense at first, but eventually does. Adams almost forgot about his idea for the novel (Gaiman 7). The Ultimate Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy satirizes many targets, but especially government and religion. The Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy began as an idea that Adams had, believe it or not, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Contrary to that fact of radical atheism, however, the satire of religion is generally mild. For example, God does exist, but His final message to the Universe is We apologize for the Inconvenience (Adams, Ultimate Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy, IV 665). However, other minor gods also exist, with Thor being a recurrent character. Another particularly memorable moment is when Zarquon, a Jesus surrogate character, returns to the Universe... a few seconds before the Universe ends (Galaxy, II 272), demonstrating how Adams believes that even if religions are correct, that would not change much. Finally, Adams satirizes religion very effectively with the in book device, the Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy Mk. II, which is a device which appears to be a bird, but has immense power. God indeed exists in The Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy, but that s about the extent of His powers. His entire involvement in the series is minimal. The opening words of one of the novels are In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people angry and been widely regarded as a bad move (Adams II, 176). So the first thing God does in the entire history of everything was a mistake, in Adams s eyes. Next, when God sent Jesus, in the words of the novel, One man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change (Adams I, 18). So, according to Adams, God has almost no power to influence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Christian Service Research Paper What is service? Service is the action of helping others in need without anyone asking you to do so. Doing service for others is very important in our life because we are called to serve and not to be served by others. God sent His son Jesus to serve and not to be served. The purpose of life is not to be happy, but to be useful, honorable, and compassionate in serving others. When we serve others, we also serve God. Giving and helping is happiness. During my junior year at Cristo Rey, I did my Christian Service hours at Cristo Rey, St. Rose Church and Loaves and Fishes. Last September 2016 I did my service hours at Cristo Rey for Mrs. Rocky. • 8. Enlightened Despotism in Prussia Assignment: 1 Critically examine the main features of Enlightened Despotism in 18th century Prussia. The Enlightenment refers to an important cultural and intellectual movement of the 18th century, whose goal was to establish knowledge based on an enlightened rationality. Enlightened Absolutism or Enlightened Despotism as it is more often called can be defined as a form of government strongly influenced by the wide propagation of ideas and the political philosophy of the Enlightenment. It is a term first used by the Philosophes in the second half of the 18th century that manifested to describe a particular phase in the development of absolutism. The term Enlightened Despot refers to those 18th century monarchs who were familiar with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Christian Wolff was the first to introduce the ideas of the Enlightenment into German administrative theory. His ideas derive from the Enlightenment. According to Wolff, the state was a voluntary contract between individuals and the main purpose of the state was to further welfare and security. At the same time, since the state has the duty to plan and implement measures for security and welfare, it has the right to insist that its citizens obey its orders. It is emphasized that they are bound to do willingly whatever the authorities deem to be right. These ideas were expounded and elaborated, without adding anything new, by the German political theorists of the 18th century and particularly by the followers of Wolff. In practice, Enlightened Absolutism was certainly not so radical. The Physiocrats never got beyond the initial stages in the implementation of their doctrines. Thus the French doctrine of Despotisme éclaire remains an interesting trend of thought, but its practical effect was almost nil. The direct influence of the German 18th century administrative theory was not much as well. Frederick II of Prussia is often regarded as the first true enlightened despot. He was the first monarch who declared the sovereign is the first servant of the state and presented Europe with a model of progressive monarchy. Frederick cultivated friendship with several Philosophes and believed that inputs from them could be used to make the administration of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Essays Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut The story is a satire, a parody of an ideological society divorced from common sense reality (Townsend). As Townsend stated Kurt Vonnegut makes a satire about society in his fictional short story Harrison Bergeron, which in their society there has been attempt of conformity through the handicaps of the people, the similarity to an authoritarian government, and the technology, whereas the people will eventually overcome. The Kind if government authority seen both mimics and satirizes the way Americans came to see the enemy (the Soviet Union) during the Cold War, which was near its height of distrust and fear in the late 1950 s and early 1960 s. For example, George one of the characters in the story, for whom is very intelligent and sharp. Because, he s so intelligent his handicap has to be a device that has a loud distinct beep that disturbs his train of thought every twenty minutes. George also has a bag of lead balls that weigh him down. The irony of the so call handicaps is that the people of this nation like George will get use to their handicaps. After a while a person will get use to the weight and learn to think faster than twenty seconds Technology is one of the main means of communication and entertainment. Such entertainment is television, which was invented by John Baird in 1926. In a Newton Minow speech he states that violence as a contributor to this wasteland he lists what people see on the television and what they take from it. In the story Harrison s mother watches her son on the television he get shot to death and does not even remember what she saw five minutes later. • 11. The Pros And Cons Of African Americans In Reconstruction The Civil War ended in 1865 and while the thirteenth amendment was being passed lots of African Americans faced problems. With the death of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson became president and while he worked with Lincoln he lacked Lincoln s critical thinking and thought that African Americans shouldn t be involved in reconstruction. The definition of freedom is the power or right one has to speak and think as one wants without restraint. Although African Americans were still being treated like vermin by whites and struggled economically they were politically free. In the year 1866, the Civil rights act was passed and it allowed African Americans to own property and be treated equally in court. The only problem with that was the south refused to obey the laws. Once Johnson pulled all the men out of the south who were suppose to protect the rights of African Americans everything fell apart. Henry Adams was traveling and six miles south of town he was beaten by four white men with sticks. The men threatened to kill every Negro that claimed he did not belong to anyone. On his way to Shreveport, he noticed twelve colored men and women beat, shot and hung ( doc D). So, while blacks were free many people in the South believed the there way of life was better and continued to treat African Americans poorly. It got to the point where President Johnson came up with new rules for African Americans that they would abide by. These new rules were called the Black Codes (C). The Black ... Phoenix Jackson s body, that is described, and her ethnicity are worth studying. At this time in history, the nineteen thirties, being a woman and African American were both downsides to what would have been desired: Caucasian and male. Phoenix Jackson s skin tone is also described very differently as well, with patches of multi skin tone with blue rage eyes (288). At first it is another noteworthy description, but when view deeper it could represent multiple things. Like many rebirthing that of a phoenix (mythical bird, that rebirth in a fireball, and reborns from their ashes) goes through, signifying her treacherous journey and obstacles overcome. It also can be used to show the diversity of not just her, but of America, where everyone old, sick, poor, no matter of race suffering all together. • 17. The Causes of Market Failure Why do markets fail to generate socially desirable outcomes? Markets are not infallible. They can fail to organise economic activity in a socially desirable fashion. Markets failure are due to social inefficiency and inequity. In the real world, the market rarely leads to social efficiency: the marginal social benefits of most goods and services do not equal the marginal social cost. Part of the problem is the existence of externalities , part is a lack of competition, and part is the fact that markets may take a long time to adjust to any disequilibrium, given the often considerable short run immobility of factors of production. Let s analyse the types of market failure. Externalities The market will not lead to social efficiency if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Property rights define who owns property, to what uses it can be put, the rights other people have over it and how it may be transferred. By extending these rights, individuals may be able to prevent other people imposing costs on them, or charge them for doing so. For example, the rich can afford better justice for top lawyers. Thus even you have a right to sue a large company for dumping toxic waste near you, you may not have the legal muscle to win. Taxes from the Government When there are imperfections in the market, social efficiency will not be achieved. Marginal social benefit (MSB) will not equal social cost (MSC). A different level of output would be more desirable. It forces firms to take on board the full social costs and benefits of their actions. For example, the bigger the external costs of a firm s actions, the bigger the tax can be. Behaviour of Monopolies and Oligopolies Monopolies may lead to inefficient allocation of resources because they may encourage suppliers to charge an abnormally high price and produce too little, thereby diminishing overall social welfare. M. H. Abrams defines an allegory as a narrative, whether in prose or verse, in which the agents and actions, and sometimes the setting as well, are contrived by the author to make coherent sense on the literal, or primary, level of signification, and at the same time to signify a second, correlated order of signification (5). It is quite obvious from the names of the characters in Young Goodman Brown that their names are contrived to give a secondary signification. Goodman is on the primary level a simple husband who is following his curiosity about evil; on the level of secondary signification he is Everyman or the new Adam: R. W. B. Lewis in The Return into Rime: Hawthorne states: Finally, it was Hawthorne who saw in American experience the re creation of the story of Adam and who . . . exploited the active metaphor of the American as Adam before and during and after the Fall (72). Results of that showed that the semantic processing was the one that we had processed the deepest as we had to actually recognise and process the words into our long term memory, and not just based on the appearance of the word. When information is first processed, it goes to the sensory memory. From there if the information I attended to, it will be processed into the short term memory and if not it will probably be lost. The native tribes of the Great Plains and the Eastern Woodlands have surprisingly different adaptions and responses to their expansions by settlers; not only in their cultures, but in their subsistence, warfare, peacemaking, and gender roles as well. Both tribes were forced to adapt and change due to the overtaking on the European settlers, but both managed to do it in different ways. First, I will look at the tribes of the Great Plains. These nomadic tribes survived on hunting, and the great American Buffalo was their main source of food. These massive animals were the main source for many items the Plains tribes made from their flesh, hide and bones, such as foods, cups, decorations, tools, knives, and clothing. The tribes followed the seasonal grazing and migration of buffalo in order to maintain their diet and subsistence throughout the year. The Plains Indians lived in tipis because they were easily disassembled and allowed the nomadic life of following game. When horses from the Spanish were finally obtained, the Plains tribes rapidly joined them into their daily lives. The natives began to acquire these horses in the 17th century by trading or stealing them from the Spanish colonists in, what is now, New Mexico. The tribes of the Great Plains were not particularly violent when the Spanish first invaded, three factors led to the growing importance of warfare in Plains culture.
